I text a lot and I was very happy to find Handcent.I liked Chomp as well but Handcent seemed to be better for me. I like the look and the pop up windows and there is so many ways to customize it. And then I got Better Keyboard which is the icing on the cake.. Just making having this phone a pleasure.

I'm with DesireMe on this. My fiance has Handcent as the keyboard lags on the stock HERO Message app. I find the interface awful and tedious. I'm also not interested in it breaking MMS sending.

However, it can handle large message threads better than stock. For some reason even on 2.1, the Hero doesn't allow Message thread limits as it did on the desire.

hahah. Thats the best way to be. The battery save is minimal, it only saves battery cause the app is white on black and black uses no screen power.

My Battery is not bad now, but its just display thats the killer.

Fair bit of use today. Couple of emails, sms and some browsing + reboot into recovery, 8 Hours. 79% left. Not too bad, but that hour traveling home - browsing is going to take up some juice.

There are a few options I like better than stock. First I text a lot and if I keep my Handcent open it alerts me when I get a new message when my screen goes off, Stock did not do that for me. I like the LED light as my alert is low so at a glance I see that some one text me. I like the fact that it uses my facebook pictures as well I know stock did that and I liked that option. I guess for me I like the visual stuff so I like it better than the stock. But stock was ok I just find this one has just a little more features.

Going OT a bit, I'm impressed with those figures, wish I could half of that.

What sort of set up do you have?

That's very good. I can't beat that. Yesterday I was 27% 14 hours. few sms and email, about 2 hours of browsing forums.

My screen kills my battery. set at 2/7. Everything else is fine. undervolted kernel running at 988MHz.
It's the best I've gotten so far!! :)

My radio signal was really good yesterday, maybe that had something to do with it...

Non rooted device as I'm still scared to do it! :(

That is a good feature. A bit like BerryBuzz app I had on my Blackberry.

I use teh Stock Android messaging app myself (not HTC) as it saves battery ;)

Not to sound daft but where can you get the stock Android messaging app and do you have to be rooted? Didn't immediately see it on the Market but there are too many sms apps to pour through.

I'm currently trying out Handcent as was getting bored with the stock HTC one (plus was getting annoyed with the cursor jumping to the top of the message thread if I moved the cursor incorrectly while trying to compose).

I like a lot of the customizing options with Handcent but I'm not loving the actual app. The widget is horrible, imo, and I prefer the HTC widget. May still go back to the HTC app.

I have a vanilla android custom rom on my phone, which yes - you have to be rooted to use.

You can get the stock app on bake0d modaco Sense roms too (have to be a member), but again - they're custom so root access required.

Thanks for that! Going to file that away mentally as I haven't had the courage to root yet. I'm still faffing about with LauncherPro getting my setup just right. Opening up too many options too soon would mean I'd never finish!
