Root Rooting using Unrevoked3 problem

hi

so just rooted using unrevoked3, i did so without a memory card in the phone (forgot i had earlier taken it out) and had a message on the phone about couldnt find sd storage.

well anyway unrevoked3 said that rooting was done and i do have the user permissions app in my app drawer. just wondering could there be anything that is not on my phone now because i didnt have sd storage in?

Rooting doesn't require an sdcard, so you're fine.

The phone looks for the sd card so it can prepare it for use, this is standard on all roms.

only if you use su to delete stuff or you might lose some if you have to reflash back to stock.

SD card is required for clockworkmod updates as it pushes a zip for it via rom manager

You don't need ROM manager though to root or install custom recovery. I never use it myself and don't have it installed.

Unrevoked is pretty much as it says, a one click rooting method.

Always do a nandroid back up though from the clockwork menu, then if things go wrong there is a back up to restore.

I appear to have successfully unrevoked with Superuser functionality however still get S-ON on HBOOT and unable, for example, to use Titanium Backup... any ideas?

you dont "need" it, however its an easier way to keep clockwork mod up to date
some of its features are nice

it doesnt say that at all, it says its not a full root which is correct its not. it doesnt root the kernal, only gives standard su permisions.

Means we don't have S-OFF for our desire as of now. Even though the new unrevoked works and roots your phone, it doesn't do S-OFF. That is why at the boot it says S-ON.

Hence unrevoked is not a full root.

The reason you need S-OFF is that few applications can interact with the system. If S-ON is present that cannot happen.

Example: Now there is a new gmail app on the market. On Few rooted ROMS the new GMAIL app downloaded from the market is not working. So people want to remove the old GMAIL app from the System(prolly through an app). As Security is ON this cannot be done and only can be achieved through recovery and ADB.

You can't turn S-OFF on GSM Desires.

S-OFF isn't required for rooting, the only thing it would let you do that you can't currently do is change the boot splash screens.

Also bear in mind that S-OFF is *extremely* risky in comparison to what we currently have.

Hmm..if changing Boot screen requires S-OFF I'm guessing the ROMS I have tried installing (Cyanogen, Neophyte, OpenDesire) all 'temporarily' at least toggled the S-OFF status, then put it right back. I guess toggling seems too simple an explanation.

Just for curiosity's satisfaction, why do u say it's extremely risky? Is it because it's much more easier to brick the phone attempting it, or is it because it leaves the phone too vulnerable-a security hole of sorts?

Both. With S-OFF it'd be trivial to brick the phone, and with a writeable system and boot any misbehaving (deliberate or accidental) app could corrupt the ROM requiring a complete wipe.

The Desire's S-ON is a pain for developers but mostly a good thing for everyone else.

The custom ROMs didn't ever get S-OFF. The boot up animation is changeable, the splash screen (either the HTC logo or the phone's branded logo) is what I mean.

Ah..One more thing..When you mean brick a phone, you mean damage it such that even a recovery rom cant be booted up/flashed onto it, right?

So how can we get to reflash it if there is no interaction between the phone and the flashing process? I dont mean to ask for the whole process. Just the concept. Is there something lying deeper than the Recovery ROM, which is normally unflasheable, but flasheable with the right tools (though risky), something about the same level as the S-OFF?

A bricked phone can't be recovered by flashing, yes. People sometimes say their phone is bricked when it just won't boot, which isn't the same thing.

The bootloader is responsible for flashing the phone's software. With S-OFF this cannot be altered, which makes the phone almost impossible to brick. Only HTC software can flash the bootloader.
