Help Best Backup Solution for me

Coming from Blackberry I am very spoiled when it comes to having all my stuff backed up.

Here is what I need backed up...

TEXTS/SMS
CONTACTS
APPS/APPDATA
CALENDAR

What program would be the best for all that?

Calendar and contacts can be through gmail, which is automatic with the phone. Astro file will backup all you apps as well as appbrain(both in the market). As far as texts, I haven't had a reason to save them so I can't help you on that. There are other routes but this is mine and works fine.

Rdjr74 is right. You can back calenda and contacts up with Google automatically. Astro file manager works well for apps and as far as SMS's, this is what I saw when googled "SMS backup android:"

SMS backup works great, it's what I used to back mine up before I rooted my phone.

For apps I highly recommend AppBrain. Astro will back up the apps, but it breaks the market links. So while you will be about to reinstall them, you won't find them in the market again, which means that they won't ever update. AppBrain does not have this problem since it's basically just a database of what you have and you reinstall from their database.

I don't sync to GMail, so my contacts are synced with Backup Assistant. Many people hate that thing (I guess because you can't turn it off) but I love it. I have been using it for over 5 years and it's never failed me.


Or... root your phone and use Titanium Backup to get all of this in one

I've heard multiple times that you can restore all of your apps using AppBrain, so I had it installed and synched before I did a factory restore. When I re-installed AppBrain after the restore it kept creating a new list of apps which were currently on, but I could still see the other list. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to just have it download all of my previous apps, so i just used the list as a reference and downloaded them one at a time. I originally tried just deleting the current list in hopes that it would sync to the existing one but no luck. If there is a way, I'd love to know it for reference.. maybe I just missed something obvious.

I make a copy of my applist in appbrain and call it backup. Then when I install a new ROM, I just install appbrain/fast web installer and go to appbrain and install the backup list.

As for the OP's question, for non rooted users, I recommend MyBackup for backups.

I recommend MyBackup for rooted and non-rooted phones. I looked at Titanium and I might consider it for rooted users just because it's free. I like MyBackup better though.

I don't. I prefer titanium, but it's for rooted users. IMO MyBackup is the best option for non root.

Titanium is free which is a huge plus obviously. I like MyBackup because it backs up everything to the cloud as well as your SD card. If you drop your phone off a bridge, Titanium does you no good because the backup is on your sd card which is also swimming at the bottom of the bay. I can get my replacement phone and do a restore from MyBackup and be good to go. I'll have to re-download all my apps, but you'd have to do that if you were using Titanium anyway. (All this assumes you're not copying your backups to the hard drive of your computer of course.) Honestly, though for a rooted phone, Nandroid is far and away the best although it's not the most convenient to use and generates huge backup files comparatively.

True. Personally I use Nandroid weekly and MyBackup on a daily basis to back up all the system settings, contacts, etc.... from my phone every morning. I have it set up to retain 30 days worth of backups in the cloud. To me, this is a huge plus. I don't typically download a lot of apps that I keep. (I download a lot of apps, but only keep the ones I find really functional.) For me, I do an app backup a couple of times a week manually when I've installed new apps or made significant configuration changes to existing one. I also copy my nandroid backups to my computer. This way if I have a catastrophic loss of my phone I simply need to root the new phone, restore from nandroid and I'm a week old at most. I can then restore from MyBackup from the cloud and at worst I've got a handful of apps I have to re-download and re-configure.

Edit: I've also set my phone up so basically everything (contacts, calendar, etc.....) sync with Google so most of my stuff is backed up already.
