Cnet prize fight.evo vs.epic

I disagreed with quite a bit... but as per usual, this stuff comes down to preference.

First of all.... 4.7 to 4.3 is hardly "kicking its butt."

Anyways, I disagreed with a few things (I own both phones). When listing the features, they said the EVO has a "superior 8MP camera." There is nothing superior about it other than the MP count... which was clearly all they cared about. The Epic's 5MP camera is better.

Also when discussing multimedia, they completely ignored the fact that the Epic has a FAR superior GPU (the best, no less) and built-in codecs to watch high definition movies WITHOUT converting. Huge feature for me.

I've always found the call quality to be better on my Epic than my EVO... but I'm just 1 person.

Oh and a physical keyboard has always been more useful to me than the kickstand. They seemed to ignore that feature altogether.

When it comes down to it, I don't believe either phone is "better" overall.... however, there is definitely a better one for ME (the Epic). As such, the EVO is the better phone for others. GO ANDROID.

The Epic's keyboard is next to worthless IMO. Hardly any tactile feedback and they set it up in rows. The GPU is nice if you play games, but I have my laptop for that and don't play games on the move. Even if you want to play the occasional game, a rooted Evo will perform the task without a problem.

The camera on the Epic I had was not impressive. iPhone 4 beats any other phone in that category.

HTC stands behind its' products with new updates (like the new Sense interface that is sure to 'trickle' down to the Evo, plus the FPS fix that I believe they are working on). Samsung has a poor reputation for doing so (case in point: Epic's GPS).

I think the problems alone on the samsung portion of the forums says it all. I would be pissed to have those issues and then not knowing if samsung will come through with the fix. I notice cnet didn't mention the issues with the capacitive buttons. People always talk about the gpu but seriously I have a ps3 for that. I rarely play games on my phone.

The epics 5mp camera is better? Pretty bold statement to make with 0 facts. Considering they had multiple people making this decision.

Superior GPU for multimedia? Unless Im mistaken they didnt mention a HDMI output on the Epic, but maybe I missed that, correct me if im wrong. But looks like youre stuck with all that GPU on the 4.3 in screen, just sayin.

Having a WORKING GPS on the Evo is 1 of the main things for me. I live in a new area (for me), and I use the GPS/Nav ALOT. That alone would have me returning the Epic. (Im sure you're aware how broken Epic's GPS is atm)

Far as the call quality? Ive talked and listened to an Evo from both ends, always been flawless to me. Ive got an out of state call from an Epic, may or may not of had good signal or been roaming etc, I dont know. But he sounded to be in a hall, or echoing, not sure. However he also pref'd a physical keyboard which was the deal maker. Feel free to correct me I was wrong at any point with a link or some proof, Im only human, and deffinately make my share of mistakes. Android > all

One more win for Evo. I think this phone's just showing that it can best or hold up against anything that was supposed to dethrown Evo. Fine effort from HTC and Sprint.

I like what HTC's done with Evo so at this point I just find the comparisons more about whether Evo proves to be as future-competitive as I estimated before getting one. So far - no question it has.

As far as CNET, most of their reviews have knocked Evo primarily for Wimax cost and lack of availability while this one didn't. When Wimax isn't where emphasis is placed, Evo keeps pushing other phones aside. And that's fair because Wimax isn't a problem of the phone so much as it is of Sprint just not having enough market coverage.

I picked up an Epic in the store the other day just to check it out and see what all the hype is about. I have no interest in the phone was just looking. It felt cheaply made and looked it also, was my first impression and MY opinion. I just dont like it and dont see how any one could consider going from the Evo to the Epic. Of course, just MY opinion and every one is different. Some people may hate the Evo and love the Epic....Its just not for me. Its gonna be tough for something to come along that tops the Evo. And for me, it will have to be made by HTC. Call me what you will but I just dont see myself ever buying another device that isnt made by HTC. I have really loved my last 3 HTC devices, being the TP, TP2, and now Evo.

I thought this thread was closed.

For an in-depth review on each camera, check this out: Epic vs. EVO: the cameras | DroidDog Android Blog

I think that pretty much says it all. The EVO records indoors and at night at about 7-10 FPS... and the outdoors daylight video is blurrier than the Epic and has over saturated colors. I've found very few people that thought the EVO's camera was better.... even in the EVO forums.

I dont think you know what a GPU is. It's the graphics processor in the phone. It allows the Epic to play 3D games faster and 720p\1080p movies. The GPU on the Epic is the fastest of any phone and is very futureproof. Now that android has the hardware, we'll be seeing more graphically intense apps and games. If android phones kept using the outdated snapdragons, they'd never be able to compete in that market.

As far as HDMI goes.... the EVO has that, the Epic has DLNA which works just fine for me. I prefer it to having yet another cable coming out of the phone.

My Epic GPS works just as well as my EVO's GPS. It is not broken. Anyone using the GPS workaround can clearly show you that (workaround:http://androidforums.com/epic-4g-su...-cache-problem-workaround-tested-working.html). It locks on to GPS satellites every time you use it. I used the GPS on the EVO alot and I use it on the Epic a lot. They're both the same to me.

I will have to echo this!!! HTC is a phone manufacturer. Their entire bottom line is dependent on the quality of their phones. Which means their phones drive their bottom line. A company like Samsung, while they make great A/V accessories, their phone business is just a piece of the puzzle and can get lost in the bustle of a large company.

Anyway, on thing that really yanks my chain about the Epic is that it launched with 2.1...not that there is really anything wrong with that. It is just that it shows that Samsung is not really all that interested in putting out top of the line phones and definitely shows their lack of support for them. I don't know if the Samsung already has got the update to 2.2, but if not, have fun waiting with your "industry leading phone". No offense, I have just been through it already with Samsung. HTC has proven that they are in it to win it by listening and providing current and continuous support for an excellent device.

I paid full price for my EVO and my upgrade is up on October 1st(on of the bennies of buying outside of your upgrade). So far I have not seen any phone current or upcoming that has come close to making me think about buying it. I know they are coming and I will be ready to pounce....but I have seen nothing. The screen size alone makes this a killer device!!!!
