the voice comman feature of the eris is pretty interesting. long press the green call button to bring it up, here are some suggested commands that came built into the my touch

some work, some dont, if you try one let us know if it works or not

i do know that you can say "open (app name)" and it will open any app on your phone, it's pretty good, even got bonsai blast...lol

Open <app name>

Call <contact> <place (mobile, home, etc) >

Open battery info

Hmm, note the frequent mentions of "Voice Command"; this looks like a list of usable commands for Windows Mobile's Voice Command program. I don't think half of this stuff is applicable to the Android Voice Dialer.

I could be wrong (apologies to the OP if I am), but I too have had little luck with any commands outside of "Call Foo" and "Dial 123", which would make sense if this list is intended for a different voice control program.

Still, it's a good place to start. Perhaps we could use this thread to compile commands that we know work with the Eris...

I'll start:

  • Call *Name_Of_Contact* (e.g. "Call Home")
  • Dial *Phone_Number* (e.g. "Dial 1-8-0-0-5-5-5-1-2-1-2")
  • Open Battery Info
  • Open *Program_Name* (e.g. "Open Browser")

I don't use the voice functionality much, but I might start if we can find some little gems that make my life easier. :)

Cheers!

Have you actually used it on the Eris by speaking a command like "find Starbucks, Naples, FL"? Because if so, I am SOOOO happy! This is one of the reasons I was holding out for the next HTC Android. A couple of reps told me it didn't have the chip set required for this. Or maybe it was the Google Voice Navigation they meant.
UPDATE: It appears that I misunderstood, that google voice DOES work now on the Eris. So they must have been referring to google voice working with google navigation. And if that is enabled with the upgrade, the Eris will rock!

I'm confused (nothing new). When you do the voice search, to search google, is that a different program than the "voice dialer"? Because, the google voice search is very accurate for me, yet the voice dialer is very inaccurate.

yes it is different i think, to bring up the voice dialer hold the physical call (green) button

I'm having problems confirming afterward. The dialer might get the contact number or program choice correct but when I say "Yes or Correct" afterward it just sits there. Any thing else I should know or do I have to physically press. OK or Cancel?

i am pretty sure you have to physically hit the menu that pops up.

I couldn't get Voice Dialer to work at all either, it would just sit there at Listening and nothing would happen.

There is an app, TopVoiceControl (and you need to get TTS Service Extended app as well) that drastically improved voice recognition for me. The TTS Service enables the text-to-speech part of the app so it can talk back to you.

After you download the apps, press and hold the call button, and it will ask which program (TopVoiceControl or Voice Dialer) you want to use and set as default.

This has worked about 1000% better than just Voice Dialer for me.

I have tried all the solutions above but still cant get it to comlete the call using only verbal commands. After I say "Call whoever on mobile" using the defaut program the phone beeps at me and list is presentd on the phone that I have to choose from. When I use the TopVoice app I get the confimation voice back to "Call whoever on mobile" but then no voice commands wil finish the call.

I can almost never get it to work. It just seems to beep and sit on the "listening" screen. Any adjustments?

I've almost never (about 2% success) been able to voice-dial with my Eris. I just spoke with an HTC rep yesterday. Turns out that the Eris voice-dialer problem is acknowledged by HTC  and will be fixed in a followup update :) sometime between now and when the 2.x update comes out . (I could NOT get him to be any more specific than that.)

For those of you who have a voice dialer that just "sits there", check the number of contacts you have.
I had the same problem, returned the phone, confirmed the voice dialer worked, loaded google with contacts and it died. Took a bunch of contacts out and it now works. I have about 1000 contacts in there, had about 3500.
Even now that it works, it still stinks, I hope the upgrade hits soon.
