A factory reset should be mandatory after Froyo...

This has probably been brought up a lot and beaten to death, but I felt compelled to make my own thread about this. I can't believe how much a factory reset helped me after installing Froyo.

I finally got around to doing it this past weekend and one word....WOW! Not only did it fix a ton of little bugs that I noticed, but it literally doubled (or more) my battery life.

I have the 2150 battery, but now I'm not sure I even need it anymore. I unplug my phone every morning during the week at about 8:00 am. After installing Froyo I was down in the 25-35% range by 3:00-4:00 pm every day. Causing me to recharge while I was at work just to make it through the night after work.

Since I did the factory reset I have been getting stellar (by the Incredible's standards) battery life. Yesterday I went to bed at 11:30 pm and I still had about 50% battery life left. Granted I didn't do a ton of stuff on my phone yesterday, but I still used it moderately.

As I'm typing this right now, it's almost 7:00 pm and I am at 51% battery life. But I did a lot more with my phone today.

Anyhow, I think a factory reset should be mandatory on this phone after installing Froyo! If anyone is on the fence, I HIGHLY recommend spending the time and doing it. It's well, well worth it.

I agree whole heartily...

Since I did the RUU which forces a wipe I have had none of the problems that the OTA seems to have caused.

Like you said, everyone that either did the OTA or Update.zip install and had problems and did a factory reset ended up feeling like it is a new phone.

Did this 5 minutes after updating to Froyo. I, too, have the 2150 extended battery, and it's been off the charger since Sunday afternoon. It's now at 38%, with batteryleft saying I have 17:03 hours left

Hmmmm... I just got my Droid incredible yesterday afternoon. I fully charged it by 11PM at night, went to sleep at 3AM, and woke up at 10AM. By 2PM, my battery was 10%! What the heezy! Should this factory reset fix this issue? Battery issues my first day!!! >:|

PS: Yes, Android 2.2 was already pre-installed on my stock phone...

well my inc went crazy yesterday and all my apps are force closing and now all my contacts are wiped out??? Will the re set help this? and how do I do it? PLZ help.

I didn't have task killer on my phone at all but then it started freezing on just the phone app. I couldn't get my phone icon to respond. So I brought it to Verizon and they installed task killer once again. Time will tell if it helped. But I do see the proof in my battery life by not running it.

If your DInc is new it's probably just the battery. Mine did that when I first got it(with 2.1) but after about 2 days battery life was much MUCH better.

no its not sarcastic, task killers are pointless, especially on 2.2 because everything reopens almost immediately. dont use a task killer period, uninstall it

A factory reset will probably fix the force close issues. You will however lose your contacts and all other settings. So basically you are starting like the day you received it or when 2.2 was installed.

Settings > SD & Phone storage > Factory data reset near the bottom

resetting as I type this... I resisted due to the crap I have to go through at work to configure it. Once something crushed that configuration I figured I might as well reset before I reconfigure.

I did a factory reset yesterday and have already seen a vast improvement in battery life. I had been taking off the charger in the morning and by 2-3p.m. won't have enough battery time left to get through the evening. After the reset around 2p.m. yesterday, I charged it up and it still has slightly less than half of that charge. Before the reset, I would have had to charge again last night. I'm pleased.

A factory reset made a vast difference on my phone after the 2.2 update. It took about 2 days to recondition the battery after that. Love this phone

Have to agree! After the ota my phones battery was at least 20% worse than it was on 2.1. After the reset it is now 5-10% better than 2.1

I'm seeing the same bump in battery life. Before the factory reset, end of the day, with a mid day bump charge, was seeing approx 25% battery life left. Did the reset last Friday. Yesterday, no mid day bump, end of the day battery life....48%!

So before I do a reset (because I to have been unhappy since the 2.2 update), what's the best way to do a backup of my contacts and settings? I'll just pull all the media off manually. Will all my apps be flagged for download automatically after I enter in my gmail account?

Mostly I'm just concerned about keeping my contacts and settings though.

I've seen a few threads on this, but it seems there are varying opinions on the subject

So I did a FR today wiping everthing on the phone including my SD card. The phone came back up, I went through the *228 to update my roaming and phone programming but I cannot for the life of me get my 3G to come back up which means I cannot resync my contacts.

I did the manual 2.2 update.zip if this makes a difference. BTW is there a way to roll back up the 2.2 update I did so I can get it pushed OTA or is that a pita?

Edit -- Forgot to add, I did FR today because my phone locked up and when it restarted half my apps were gone, the ones that stayed would not open and always FC, and I had to resync my contacts because only 7 were on the phone out of the 86 I had.

Edit -- I tried calling the phone and it goes straight to voice mail now also. Also when I try to call out it says the mobile number is not active or not valid.

For those asking how to do a factory reset, I will post how I did mine. In my opinion it is the cleanest way and will avoid carrying over any bugs. It might take a bit longer than some other options, but it worked best for me.

I used My Backup Pro as recommended in another thread to backup my settings and my Scene, but that carried bugs over requiring me to do another factory reset. Once I did it "my" way, my phone has been 100% functional and improved. Here are the simple steps that I did:


1. Backup your contacts. The easiest way to do this is if you have a SD card installed in your phone. To do this just click on the "People" icon, press "menu'', press "Import/Export", press "Export to SD card" and then follow the prompt from there.

2. Backup all of your internal phone data (photos, music, etc.) to your PC. To do this I just created a folder on my PC desktop and named it something like "Incredible Internal Phone Files". I then connected my phone to my PC via USB and used the "Disk Drive" option. I then dragged my "DCIM" (photos) folder and "Downloads" folder over to the folder on my PC. Off the top of my head, I believe any videos that you shot with the camera also are in the DCIM folder, so you should be good there.

3. Backup your SD card to your PC (if you have one installed in your phone). While a factory reset SHOULD NOT clear your SD card, I did this simply as a precaution. Just like #2, I simply created another folder on my PC desktop and named it something like "Incredible SD Card Files". I then connected my phone to my PC as in #2 and selected all of my files from the SD card and copied them into the folder on my PC.

4. Download and install AppBrain (if you haven't already), and sync all of your apps to their online server.

5. Do the factory reset. Achieve this by pressing "menu", press "Settings", press "SD & phone storage", press "Factory data reset" and press "Reset phone & internal storage". Follow the prompts from there.

6. When your phone is back up and running, reinstall your contacts. To do this, follow the exact steps from #1 except instead of pressing "Export to SD card", press "Import from SD card".

7. Go into the market and re-download and reinstall AppBrain. Once in there it should show all of your apps that need to be reinstalled.

8. Set your scene back up to how it used to be and put all of your phone settings back to where they used to be.

Voila, you should be back up and running with fresh start. This helped me a ton and I'm sure it will do the same for you if you are having any issues. Please let me know if you have questions.

Does AppBrain do anything besides look at the apps you have and then tell you to download them later? If it saves the apps' settings the I'm all for it, but if it just tells you what to re-download, I'd almost rather do some app pruning in the process of restoring.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe AppBrain saves any settings for you.
