got the update. Now my phone is totally useless! It is unresoosive and stuck checking satus updates, none of my buttons work...NOTHING! Would't even shut off. Had to do a battery pull, and still doing the same thing. :/

You Def. need to make a post in the support forum so you get some attention for that issue!!

My Droid 1 did that after loading froyo roms. It turned out to be a corrupted memory card. Try taking your sd card out of your phone, if you have a spare card you can try that, if you don't just leave your card out of the phone and reboot. If the phone is fine without the card, then you will need to move your files off your card and reformat the card. Then move only essential files and folders back to the card.

Montuhotep - I had the same problem initially after I installed the updgrade. I updated LauncherPro and after a few batt pulls it seems to have worked itself out.

Only remaining item is my battery drained quickly this morning... but that may be to my constant playing with the phone to see whats new.

Yeah the stupid thing keeps installing apps I've uninstalled.

How do we turn it off?
You probably have a back up copy of your settings and apps stored on Google servers. After update or hard reset your phone, you must disable automatic restore of those.
It is easy. On the very beginning, when you are just about to sign in into your Google account, just press Menu button and disable it. That is it. Hope this would help. :)

But I don't want to reset and go back that far:(. Isn't there an option some place else?
