Do you mean just to have it on your /sdcard (like in /sdcard/download) so that you can re-install it after you've flashed a new ROM? If this is what you want, can't you just move / save the .apk file for the autostartroot program on your /sdcard/download folder and then just re-install it via Astro File Manager?

Or, are you talking about apps2sd? (this is not supported on all ROMs).

Sorry, if I've misunderstood some of your post...I'm not familiar with the autostartroot app...

BTW, you are correct, Paul Kopalek (pkopalek) IS "the man" :D [he helped me root way back when]

You'd have to move Astro File Manager too. You can actually use Astro to make a backup of itself to your /sdcard (other apps/tools do this too). Launch Astro, press menu button, select Tools, select Application Manager/Backup, let it create its app list, select "ASTRO" (and any other apps you want to backup) and check the checkbox, then press the "Backup" button. You're apps will then be saved to the /sdcard/backups/apps folder and Astro File Manager will be named "com.metago.astro.apk".

Lol, I just realized, you have to have something that you can use to install apps with (which is usually Astro!)... How do you install Astro if you don't have access to the Market? Can you get wi-fi (at a public hot spot) even briefly?

also can i flash a rom, make a backup and flash another rom, then later do a restore , kind of like switching roms through the diff backups in nand?? is this possible, that way it saves all my settings in each rom,,, is that possible??

Yes! Absolutely! That's what all of the "ROM flashers" ;) do. This is exactly what you do to switch from ROM to ROM that you've tried-out.

You can even (carefully) rename the Nandroid backup folder from BDS-ccyymmdd-hhmm format to something more meaningful, like kaos-froyo-2010-09-22 or xtrSense-home-base, etc. Just make sure you don't use spaces in your filenames or Amon_RA's custom recovery won't be able to see them to restore.

Make sense?

No problem...by the way, I mis-typed, the backup for Astro will be "com.metago.astro.apk" (its not a .zip).

I don't know exactly what the system does when it goes through the app installation process (I should...;))--I know how to restore a previously installed app, but not a new one. If I figure it out or find out I'll re-post here for you!

Cheers!

hamsterhonda,

I totally spaced it! You can actually install apps via the Android SDK's adb utility. No wi-fi or Market necessary.

So, if you've backed-up Astro (or whatever application), you should be able to do this:

- install the Android SDK (Android SDK | Android Developers); you just really need to download and extract the main .zip file to your PC--you don't need the ADT Plug-in). Also, see this page: Installing the SDK | Android Developers. Make sure you set your phone to Charge-only and Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging (checked)

- startup a Windows Command Prompt on your PC

- change to the tools directory of where you extracted the Android SDK (i.e., cd c:\android-sdk-window\tools)

- copy the app that (like the Astro File Manager we talked about earlier)you previously backed-up using Astro File Explorer to your PC: adb pull /sdcard/backups/apps/com.metago.astro.apk com.metago.astro.apk (you can also just copy files from your phone to your PC with it mounted as a disk drive and use Windows Explorer)

- to install the Astro File Manager app from the backup, type this: adb install /sdcard/backups/apps/com.metago.astro.apk

I tried this with one of my apps and it works just fine.

Pretty cool, eh?

Cheers!
