Root Favorite Kernel with Virtuous?

I have used several of the Kingx kernels in the past and was OK with some, less than happy with one of them because it defaulted to 245mhz and took forever for phone to boot up as a result. I hear good things about the hydra kernels but I like using setCPU, and since they don't recommend using it with those kernels, I've not tried them. I'm currently using Virtuous 2.7 with the custom kernel and I'm very happy with it since I'm not interested in overclocking my phone at it gives all the other features I really need, as well has good battery life performance. So, for what its worth, there ya go.

If I got Hydra, how would I got back? Wouldn't I just restore nandroid? I like the custom kernel too, but SetCPU seems to kill battery instead of help it. I used the settings I found on here. Maybe I just gotta use it a bit longer.

If you install another kernel, you can go back to the Virtuous custom kernel through ROM Manager. It has an option for it. The only way SetCPU should be killing battery is if you are using it to overclock. By using it to underclock my phone drastically when the screen is turned off, it improves my battery life by a good bit.
Example: I am currently on 16 hours since unplugged and my phone is at 69%. I've had the phone on screen off most of the day with light use, but this still illustrates how much it helped.

Guess I'll go with Hydra see what happens. If not, i'll go back and try SetCPU again.

The best kernal I've used with 2.7 so far is the Custom Kernal from ROM Manager, as far as battery life goes. Using conservative scaling and keeping it at 245/768, I had great battery life this past Saturday. 3G & sync on, bt off, gps off, wifi off, brightness 100%, after ~12 hours uptime/~4.5 hours wake time, I still had 64% battery left.

The only problem is I'm still getting a drain on the battery while charging and using GPS. I haven't had a chance to pick up a new 1000ma charger to see if it would fix it, but I installed the newer Adrynalyne experimental Undervolt stock kernal two nights ago. This new kernal allowed my phone to charge with GPS/navigation running (still at about 40% the rate it would without GPS/nav) I had to keep IM up to communicate with people from work all day yesterday, which is a lot more than I normally use my phone for. I hope to get a more accurate idea to see how it works after today. So far its stable, but I notice a little more lag than the Custom Kernal. It's not bad though.

I've been using this kernel and battery life is awesome.

I'm using custom kernel too with setcpu. It will not let you OC so it really shouldn't kill your battery. I just use a screen off profile which keeps drain down to nil when off. It's just really hard to get a bead on things because every day we use the phone differently.

Yeah, that's my biggest challenge. One day I'll get absolutely phenomenal battery life, next day, well, not so much. Some days I work my phone like a slave, other days it has "a dog's life."

Totally. Yesterday my phone battery was dropping like a rock. I looked and had left ESPN open on my Dolphin and it was constantly refreshing the stupid scores, which btw my team lost anyway. Awake time spiked until I closed it, then it was back to normal. So we just work differently when circumstances dictate. That's why I am always not too far from a charger and if I am, I have my trusty bumped battery in my pocket.

Do you store your battery in anything while in your pocket? I don't like that the battery leads are bare. Just curious.

With the custom kernel for Virtuous, I'm at 52%(13:50 up time, 2:02 awake time) right now with the stock 1300mAh battery. ~50mins was jogging around a lake with Cardio Trainer on(GPS), and the other times were just web browsing. Everything is left on and brightness at auto.

Does the beta custom kernel just fix the charge issue while using the phone(GPS/Navi)?

I am having pretty good results with Virtuous and KK BFS #1 and doing a "bump" charge each morning. Yesterday I still had about 30% or so at the end of the night when I put it back on charger. That was with moderate use for the most part but some of that use was playing "Skies of Glory" for quite awhile.

I am also using SetCPU set to 1036800 MAX, scaling conservative and one profile for the screen off max: 384.

I was getting 16 hours moderate use with kingskernal bfs 4
today I tried hydrakernel undervolted and I got a loss in performance and no extra battery life. I am gonna try adrynalyne's new battery save kernel tomorrow.

I tried the new adrynalyne battery save kernal the last few days, and I'm getting about the same battery life as the Virtuous Custom Kernal but at least I can charge my phone while running navigation. So far I'm pleased with it. It's not a significant improvement, but much better than stock.

Quick update on using Virtuous 3.0 and the Adrynalyne Experimental Battery Saver kernal. Take this with a grain of salt because this was with really light usage (all text, gmail and one facebook check; no phone calls, 1 reboot several minutes after being unplugged), but here's what I've had since yesterday afternoon:

To be honest, I really think I used around 2 hours of wake time and I think some app was running for the other 4 hours. But still, the Adrynalyne experimental kernal seems to be the one that works best for me. I should have a more accurate idea of battery life after work tomorrow.

I found it on Ardrynalyne's webpage: Experimental Kernel (aosp and Sense) Just another blog

Here's the direct download: http://adrynalyne.us/files/kernels/battery.zip

It seems a little slower than the Virtuous Custom Kernal, but barely noticable. Definitely nowhere near the lag I had with BFS#3 or #4. But I'm getting slightly better battery life, plus I can charge it while using GPS & Navigation which I couldn't do with the Custom.

EDIT: also, this kernal is stock speed and undervolted. The only problem I've had is that it allows you to set the bottom end cpu speed as low as 128 mhz. I had frequent lockups when I used that on any profile or scaling. Keeping the minimum at least 245 mhz corrected this issue.

Can you please post your settings in SetCPU ? I am running the same ROM and Kernel as you and have no idea how to set them up right with SetCPU.
