Help Music keeps disappearing...

Can I ask how you put music on your HTC Desire? I will just quickly explain how I do it:

-Plug in the HTC Desire with the supplied lead (the one that also enables you to charge the phone via the mains plug)

-Select the Disk Drive (mount as disk drive) option, when I do this a window automatically appears on the screen of my laptop, and the option I click on is "Open folder to view files (it says "using windows explorer" underneath this option)

-Another window then opens up which is the contents of my phone (Comes up as Removeable Disk (F )

-From here I open my music folder on my laptop, position each window side by side, and drag'n'drop the music I want into my phone (displayed as Removeable Disk (F )

-I then go back to my phone, select "charge only", and a message briefly appears in the notification bar at the top of the phone which says "preparing SD Card"

-When I go into my music player it will either say "no music found" or (As I have done this countless times now!) it will show the music I have put on the phone with a message that says "unable to play this type of file", even though it is an MP3.

So my question is how do you all put your music on your HTC Desire? Is there anything I must do to ensure the music will play, or even stay on the phone?

I've tried other ways aswell like:

-ejecting the phone from my laptop by right clicking on "Removeable Disk (F and selecting "eject disk

-putting the music into a "Music" folder

-not putting the music into a "music" folder, instead just dragging and dropping into the phone without putting it into any folder

-turned the phone off and on again (As I'm sure I read somewhere that the phone will recognise the music is on the phone once it has been rebooted

Thanks in advance for any advice given, or if anyone on here has experienced similar issues

i made a folder on the sd card root directory named 'mp3' with all music in there... try it

I don't know what the matter could be, as I follow the same procedure and I can see the music appear immediately..

In the music player, tap the button on the bottom left, and go to tracks. Do you see anything there?

I have tried formatting the SD card, and now the music is being uploaded without any problems so far

If anything weird happens from now on I will update on this thread, but for now all is well!

oooh, mine does this to!?! i make sure all the music is there and when i go to play it on my phone and it says its unsupported, then when i plug it in to my laptop the 97% of my mp3's have dissapeared as if deleted by my phone.. why oh why?? very frustrated.. (could it have any thing to do with the new 32gb card i bought)

I'm having the same prob as Glittafly, hve even tried using a microSD card reader, still having the same prob. Anyone know what we can do to fix the issue??

Make sure your phone is not plugged into the computer, then format the SD card IN THE PHONE using the option under Settings, SD and phone storage, Format. Do not use your computer or any other device. Then create a folder for your music (call it music, tunes, MP3 or whatever you want) and drag and drop the files. As soon as you disconnect the USB cable or switch the phone to "charge only", it will find and play the songs.

I just gave it a try, but I can only unmount the SDcard, the option to format wasn't available.

i just clicking and gragging from my music folder to the music folder on my sd card. It worked fine that way on the original sd that came with it, but no end of problems with the new 32g ive purchased.

After i made my second post, i tried unmounting the sd card, then the format option was available, so ive now formated the card via the phone, dragged 2 music folders from my pc to the sd, the folders copied, but there was no music in the on the sd card, same thing with my rom folder. So now it seems like the folders are moving over, just not the files within them. Im starting to think it might be a dodgy sd card

Now ive turned my phone on and off, and 3 quarters of all the files that were copied have disappeared. No music, Photos, roms etc

Any suggestions people?? Im getting sick of carrying my old iphone with me for music, and im ready to throw my desire at a brick wall!! >=(

not being funny, and I mean no offence, but where did you get your 32gb card, what brand is it?

It sounds like your card could be fake, a smaller card labled and posing as 32gb.

if not, and i hope not, maybe try partitioning the card into 2 sections might help.

its a kingston, was purchased from a shop here in the city in melbourne. Although, now that i think back to it, it wasnt bought from a very reputable shop, as in, the type of owners are the sort to play a fcken dodgy trick like this. so wouldnt suprise me if its a fake.
if thats the case, they will be getting a major ear blasting when i go in tomorrow or monday.
Weird thing is, its saying 32g on the card, and shows as a 32 gig when connected to my pc, so that would have to mean its a 32g wouldnt it. excuse my ignorance, but im not THAT computer savy :S But is there a way they can make a 2gig card show as a 32g when connected to a pc??

yes, they can fake the byte count on the card, and print any number they like on the cards exterior. there are a lot of fake 16gb and 32gb cards about.

a 32gb card wont show 32gb of space in windows, probably more like 28gb or 29gb due to the difference between megabits and megabytes, so if your card shows 32gb in windows then I would say there is a good chance its fake.

its showing 31.2gb exactly, if i have time on my lunch break tomorrow, ill be taking it back to the shop i bought it from to have a chat with them. Need to determine, if they bought it straight through the manufactors, or from a third party. If it was from a third party, im guessing there is a pretty high chance its a fake.

Do you by any chance have a 32g that you can check on ur pc to check whats showing up? would help alot when i go to the shop tomorrow.

Ive pretty much given up on the 32g card, and am just using the 2g that came with the phone again. Looks like ill be using my iphone formusic until i can get this sorted.
Only downside ive found to these phones is that they could have come with a larger standard storage space on the phone, and then had the sd expansion.

I too am having this problem with a brand new HTC Evo 4G and stock 8GB card. It did work fine at one time. I am moving apps to the SD card since the Evo has a paultry 400MB of internal space. :-(

I've tried to delete the cache for Music player and stuff but no luck.

hi i also had this problem on my desire hoe i fixed it was unmounting the sd card (in the phone) then formatting it (also in the phone) fixed the problem btw my music was dissappearing but the space was still taken up and the songs that would play played really fast

So as per the advice here, I dual booted into Linux and tar balled up the entire SD card. Then I formatted the SD card by physically removing it. Then once back into the Evo (since I couldn't format it whilst IN the Evo for some reason) I re-formatted it using the Evo. Then I pulled the card out and untarred the files back onto the SD.

Now when I boot up the Evo, my music DOES show up, but all my applications that were "on the SD" say "the linked program is no longer installed on your phone". WTF!!!!? How do I get them all back without re-installing everything and re-setting it all up again?! This is ridiculous!

you cant, if they were "installed" to sdcard then they are gone.
this is why people tend to root devices and use tools like titanium backup and nandroid backups in recovery as its more convenient

Why are they gone? It's an exact copy of the data that was on there before the format!?!? Re-read my post. I can SEE all the .apk files and directories and all that stuff on the card since I restored them from the tar-ball. I don't understand why Android can't find them again, unless it tried to be "too smart" for it's own good and when I said "format SD" from AndroidOS, it wiped out all it's internal links to that SD cards ID or something stupid like that which would be completely asinine.

I can't root my phone. unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool, v3.22 doesn't support my Evo version it seems . I've tried it several times. Not to mention, I'm still in the 30 day trial period deciding if I want to even keep this thing or not -- as it stands, I'm tired of fighting with this thing and think I'll return it. Android is just not ready for prime time. It's still a "hackers" toy it seems. Maybe in another year or so they'll have it polished up and work out all these poor design decisions (I hope). I really wanted to love this phone.

I just find it absolutely ridiculous that I can't make a stable backup of EVERYTHING in my phone without "rooting" or jumping through hoops. My PalmOS Treo/Centro has done this for 20 years.

i can understand your frustration but its not an exact copy, when you use the froyo apps2sd it creates unique links to the files on the sdcard, when its formatted and then rebuild using any other method than a system image (nandroid) then these links are not recreated and they are just seen as dormant apk files.
this is the downside to apps2sd built into froyo
the rooted version puts them on an ext partition and when rooted you can nandroid.
i didnt realise palm backed up everything including apps and lets not exaggerate about "20years" what you gonna back em up to? floppy via parallel port?
