I have a droid. Just got the 2.2 update and everything seems funky. I have many question, such as do I need a task killer anymore, is there away to back my phone up if I lose it. Id also like to know is there away to speed this thing up with out messing up the phone or screwing up the ease of use, navigation and such. Please get back to me email or otherwise.

The task killer debate is a tough (and drawn-out) one, but more than likely you didn't need it in the first place. Titanium will back up your apps and data, and nandroid will back up everything. SetCPU will speed it up, along with the correct kernel for your phone, and at this point I don't think many, if any at all, will mess with navigation and such.

Of course, all of that is dependent on rooting your phone, which I'm assuming you haven't:

Thanks Guy... Another question about lingo... what does Froyo and rooted mean? I checked out these apps on the market but nandroid brought nothing up.

Froyo is the nickname for Android 2.2. Rooted means you have access to the root files of the phone. The way I explain it to my friends is: "Basically I hacked my phone so I can do 10x what I could do before."

PatHoge pretty much nailed it. As far as Nandroid goes, it is the ability to back up your phone's goodies through the custom recovery you will install during the rooting process. By goodies, of course, I mean EVERYTHING. The beautiful thing is, you create a nandroid backup (the directions are everywhere once you start learning to root) and you always have a safe place to return your phone to. Always a last stable state. If you use ROM Manager (premium, I believe) it will even do it for you on a set schedule. Nandroids are also the reason I think a lot of people say it's virtually impossible to brick these devices. That and good old-fashioned study habits ;-)

Froyo (Android 2.2) is several months old now (even though a lot of phones either just got it or are still waiting for it) and now there is talk of Google releasing Gingerbread, the next version of Android, in the coming weeks/months.

A rooted and ROMmed Droid will get the Gingerbread goodies LONG before Verizon allows its watered-down version to go out. By the time stock phones get Gingerbread, we'll already be waiting for Honeybun (or whatever "H" is).

I don't think the OP has a rooted phone, and from the questions they are asking it would be way over their head to even attempt something like that. I know there is 1click root or something like that but I think in this case, the fewer options available the better.

I would suggest MyBackup Pro, which can backup your files to their servers or to the SD card. If you choose to backup to SD card, you'll want to also save that file to a computer or something outside of the phone, since you are concerned with losing your phone. A backup does no good if its on the phone you lost.

As far as task killers, they aren't needed. Period. There are some task managers that can be helpful if you're trying to kill a rogue app. It is still using GPS after you close it, for example. But Android handles its memory just fine, and will close background apps as needed.

They could be able to tell, but probably wouldn't notice unless they themselves had a rooted phone. I'm not sure if Verizon "trains" employees to be able to look for these things. That being said, rooting your phone implies you are taking certains risks that could lead to a messed up phone. In which case you would be SOL, since you voided your warranty when you chose to root.
