Help Smashed Phone Question

Thanks for all the replies!

OMG!!! I had to come back and share my experience!! As well as ask you guys what's the worst case scenario in this situation..Listen (or read) this..LOL

So I go to Verizon first thing this a.m and asked for the manager that I usually deal with who is pretty awesome. He wasn't in and a regular sales rep helped me out. She told me that they carried certain plans for ppl/problems like mine. Meaning, those that have a broken phone with no insurance. Unfortunately though , the Incredible wasn't one of the phones covered. So she kept reading and reading and turns to me and begins to inspect the phone. Now mind you, the screen is shattered...BUT it's not the top layer of the screen; it's like a lower layer. So basically, if you look directly at the phone or in low light, it IS hard to see it. But in light, there's no way you can miss it. ANYWAY, she tells me that the phone looks "good" and will put a claim through saying that it's a manufacturers warranty that the screen won't turn on. I was in my glory!!! She tells me that i'll get it in 2 business days, tells me the rules, etc. Soooo, as i'm waiting for her to finish processing everything, I asked her what would be the worst case scenario when they recieve my broken screen phone? Would they charge me, etc. She said how would they know YOU broke it? I said ummmm, bc the screen is like that!! She then looked closer at the phone and said, " oh damn, I didn't realize that when I inspected it. But I'm going to leave everything as is and 99% of the time they probably won't even catch it."

So here's my question. I'm going to be receiving a replacement phone in 3 days and then mail back in my messed up screen DINC. At that point, what can the company do once they get my messed up phone? Can they charge me? Demand the phone back? I mean, if the Verizon rep processed the claim, can they actually demand me to pay for the retail price of the phone???

I immediately began thinking of all different ways to defend myself IF they even come after me once I get the replacement and mail back mine.

Thoughts??

Thanks guys!!

It all depends on the detail that the technician will do. He may just glance at it and dump it, or he may actually inspect it. If so, yes you have a high probability of getting charged. I just want you to be prepared so you are not blind sided later.

1. Why would you even mention anything to the VZW rep after she had said is was a manufacturing defect?

2. If HTC calls, refer them to VZW. Tell them the truth - you took it to the store to figure out what to do, you were told it was a defect, and that is it.

1. You say something because you are honest and want to make sure you are not committing fraud by agreeing to something which isn't true.

2. Unless you know you broke the screen, you can tell them you figured it was caused by a defect during normal use of the phone.

I would assume they will inspect it and refurb it and thus at some point will figure out the problem. The question is whether they will bother to trace it back to you when they figure it out. My guess is that they wont (JUST A GUESS).

Either way, be honest and see what happens.

They can't prove the screen wasn't broken while being shipped back to them...
That was my thinking. A friend actually recommended I insure it when I mail it back so that if it even came about that I would be responsible for paying full retail for the phone, to then blame the post office..LOL!

1) Well for one, I didn't want me to get bit in the butt for trying to lie about it. i mean, the screen is shattered. But, more importantly, I REALLY thought she had seen it broken. She was staring at it and inspecting the thing like she wanted to kiss it. :p So when I was asking how exactly is my "screen" a manufacturer defect, i thought she knew what I was talking about. I wasn't intentionally trying to point out something that I thought she hadn't already seen.

2) That was one of my thoughts also. If the Verizon rep, knowingly processed the claim, why and how can I be held responsible? It was approved by them..No??

Either way, be honest

if he had done that from the start, this thread would have ended at "contact HTC about replacing the screen".

if you were truly honest, then you wouldn't have even gone to the store after being told that the warranty doesnt cover damage. or you would have told the rep UP FRONT that you broke your screen, instead of waiting until after everything was done.

Ummmm, for your information MR. JUDGEMENTAL...that is EXACTLY what I did. I went into Verizon and told them my phone fell and the screen no longer works. "Until after everything was done?" The screen was shattered, please explain how exactly I was trying to hide that? I went there looking for options, not hand outs. Nor was I trying to scam anyone. And why would I deal with anyone OVER THE PHONE (HTC) when I have a Verizon store down the block?? That's just a silly comment. But considering your post, not too shocking.

And for the record, I'm a SHE not a HE.

Next time, why don't u politely keep your $.02 to yourself if you have nothing informative to help with or add. Thanks for reading :)

Hey, take it easy. Read the thread before you post. She went to Verizon and told them. Hence the reason they told her they had certain plans for people in his situation (just the incredible wasnt available at the time).

And what is so wrong about trying to go to the store and getting help? It is totally at the managers discretion whether or not to replace a phone. Damage or not. (policies are set in place, but a manager can override).

Little tip (to prevent you sounding like a jerk), read the entire thread before you post.

Izzy, I hope that you do indeed have no issues with the replacement process. You handled it in a good, honest way.
