Help notification bar icons

Can anybody tell me how I can change the icons on the notification bar to different colours if WiFi to blue or network to orange etc, many thanks

I am not well versed in the HTC Desire, but as with the Eris (my phone) I believe it would require Rooting your phone:
Desire - All Things Root - Android Forums
...after which you would look through the available themed ROMs and choose one to flash.

You may also be able to theme your phone with whatever ROM you like if you can find something like "metamorph" or another .apk to change colors and so on.
