What will you upgrade to next?

I loved my Eris when I first got it, then it started to slow down, a lot! Then I rooted it, and now I love it again. Recently I was at the store with my girl looking for an upgrade for her, and she was looking at the Galaxy S and the Incredible. That got me thinking, what am I gonna upgrade to when 2 years is up?

The Incredible is nice, little bigger, but I like the Eris's trackball much better. The Galaxy S is really nice, but HUGE compared to the Eris, and don't remember if it even had a track ball. Also the Galaxy S has it's Home button and Menu button's locations switched as compared to other Android phones.

I'd really like for HTC to make and Eris II, or hopefully an Incredible II.

What are you guys going to upgrade to?

Already did my upgrade (had to steal my wife's upgrade though ) and went with the Droid X.

Do not regret it one iota. Best phone out there, IMO.

Still got my beloved Eris, though (my first smartphone).

My first smartphone was a Moto Q9m, though I grew to hate that thing, so I'm calling it a kindasmartphone. That means that the Eris can be my first smartphone, too.

I am upgrade eligible in 11 months, and, by then, I expect that there will be a completely different set of phones out there. Incidentally, I lost my iPod Nano about a month ago, but decided to replace it after Apple released their new models - I figured that an announcement was imminent, based on past history, and, sure enough, Apple announced the new ones a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I ended up going with an iPod Touch over a Nano, and, I have to say, if Verizon has the iPhone in 11 months, that's what I may switch to. There are a lot of things I really like about Android, but, for the most part, iOS is better, and that's after only six days of using the Touch. Apple should do something to make notifications better, but, otherwise, heresy, I know, but, IMHO, it's better.

At this point, though, after seeing all of the problems with the Eris, including its not-so-strong radio, the silent audio bug, the weak battery performance, I doubt that I would want another HTC phone.

Its funny, although my Eris has (knock on wood) been trouble-free from day one, I was a little cheesed about how long it took for released 2.1 into the wild (officially, of course--I never leaked (promise! )).

I do understand that it was probably a sales/marketing/throwing-good-money-after-bad tactic re. the Eris given that it was more of a lower-end device compared to the original Droid. Also, supposedly updating HTC Sense to work with 2.1 was one of the reasons for the 2.1 release delay (not really buying that).

But it did have an impact on my choosing a Motorola device over HTC. But, of course, Motorola has Blur (there's always something, eh?).

I did a lot more research this time around and picked the X for its large screen, performance, and did I mention the large screen?

Lots of guys over on the X forum are up-in-arms about the locked bootloader, etc. Well, as you might know, I'm not a rabid ROM-flasher anyways, so custom ROMs were not a deal-breaker for me (at this time).

There will always be a "next big thing" with lots of pros and cons. Get what you want and can...that way, if you have issues/problems, you'll have lots to post about it here on AF (and we get to commiserate with you for having made the same choices, lol).

Looks like Verizon's Galaxy S does not have an indicator light...isn't that odd? I've grown to like mine. There is no trackball. Thinking either Incredible or HTC Merge. Looks like BIG RED is speeding up the 4G network upgrades, wonder if HTC Sense will make an appearance in 4G, I would like that.

tomorrow means that i have exactly 12 months for an upgrade. in that time, i'm sure there will be a few new phones out, so we will see then. if i had my upgrade now, i would either choose between the droid x or the d2. more than likely i would flip a coin to make that decision as it is either a 50/50 shot. lol

You will find that if you root your Eris, all those problems go away, and its a super fast and battery efficient phone. I will be rooting every phone I get from now know. Thats why I hope they make an Eris II

Seriously after rooting, I could care less about the latest and greatest. Thanks to all the fantastic ROM developers, my Eris is fast. My contract ends August next year and by then, there will be a 4G Android Phone with a dual core CPU, that's what I want.

I disagree with that. Battery may be better with root, but it's still not great. Compare a rooted Eris with a Droid X, Incredible, Droid 2, or iPhone 4 and you will see that it is not super-fast. Mediocre signal strength remains the same with root, and though (thankfully) I never had that silent audio problem, I have read of people with root who still suffered silent audio.

And root does not fix the poor capacitive soft buttons on the bottom, which sometimes do not respond to touch, and certainly have to be pressed slightly above their icons. And root does not fix the trackball problems that so many have had. And it still has a bad camera.

of course Rooted Eris wont compare to the Droid X, Incredible, and Droid 2. I should have rephrased my sentence to say, "compared to a non-rooted Eris, the rooted Eris runs a lot faster and the battery lasts longer"

not sure about Bing? Tried it on the Samsung Galaxy S and it seems alright. You can download a free app called Open Search and it allows you to use Google as your search instead of Bing.

I have owned an iPhone and would never go back. You can't upgrade memory or battery. You get NO decision making power in how it operates. Fewer choices in apps, accessories, and community. The price tags on all their products are almost comical they're so inflated.

Besides, every year goes by with someone "leaking" info on the pending availability of the iPhone on CDMA networks. And every year that follows is another year with nothing more than more "leaked info" on....

Take this Jobs and shove it.

Back to the point of the thread:

I would likely go with the Incredible if I were able to upgrade now. I like HTC. I like their style. I have never been impressed with Motorola, but would probably be happy with an X.

But since I cannot upgrade for another year, I will just enjoy this wonderfull rooted Eris with expanded battery and storage memory with TONS of flexability.
I really do love my Eris and wouldn't hesitate to buy an Eris-2!

I'm entirely serious. I love apple hardware, and all the iphones have been gorgeous pieces of kit. I just really don't care for apple, app store policy or iOS in general.

That said, is there an iOS equivalent of 'root'? I know about jailbreaking, but does that give them all the same priveledges? ie: would that allow tethering, skinning, OCing, apps2sd functionality, etc

Id probably get a droid x(or droid 2), surprisingly the DX and the Eris are not that much apart in size difference.

Wow the HTC Merge looks interesting, it will be a turn off to me if it is as big as the EVO though. I don't see myself going anything that big anymore, Indredible is do-able.

I am surprised though how some of these future Android phones are coming pre-loaded with Bing Search and Bing Maps as defaults, wtf?! It's Google Android, not Microsoft Android, I'm not impressed with Bing at all...

I thought my upgrade was in December but I just got a tx msg from VZW on Friday saying I was now elegible for a NE2. That being said, I'm very happy with my Eris as my frist android device. I'm going to wait until Christmas time and see what the new baddest phone is and go from there.

Yes, BIG RED all the way. I like the EVO alot but Sprint doesn't have nearly the coverage that Verizon has. I also have a Droid X for my work phone and I actually did not want it because of the size. But, now that I have been carrying it for a while, I have adjusted and like the big screen and HD video recording. I just rooted my X with Froyo BTW. Still use my Eris about 5x as much as my X, just really like Sense.

You may want to wait until after the first of the year as Verizon is EOLing the Droid X and Droid 2 (well actually EOLing any of the current smartphones in their line up, minus the fascinate (as far as I know) come 3/31/2011 which means around January and February we will start seeing a whole new line up of phones available. I am assuming around this time we will start seeing LTE (4g) phones come into play and quite possibly dual or even (dare I say) triple core phones.

Also you will see price drops on the current android phones as Verizon makes room for new phones. Just my 2 cents.

Back to the question at hand, if we were to upgrade now (my wife is on a rooted Eris and I'm on a rooted D1) I'd have to go with The Droid X because I don't use my physical keyboard (I got the D1 for the power back in November) and the HDMI out which is a huge selling point for me. My wife on the other hand would go Incredible but only because it's the smallest of the high end android phones out.
