I was just messing around with the camera and tried to take a macro shot, managed to get as close as around 2 inches, but kept having to half press the shutter button to adjust the focus

--BUT--

Download the Shop Savvy app, and the camera will acheive perfect focus as close as 2 inches, it will also have constant servo autofocus activated

The devs of Shp savvy has obviously managed to hack and tweak the camera settings, so heres hoping tht more feature will be forthcoming for, in reality, a camera that leaves a little to be desired


Just as a sidenote, here is the macro shot I took

Its nothing too flash, just a spoon handle on a cloth background, but it does indeed show off the quality of the lens and sensor fitted to the G1 camera, its just begging for more features

Having to half depress the shutter button is natural for me, I have to do the same on my SLR. If they do change it to auto-focus, I hope they keep a setting so I can still press the shutter button, otherwise the servo motor will continuously try and focus having an immediate effect on power.

I guess its all about what feels natural to the user, they can't please everyone all the time

I know, that pic was taken with the regular camera.

I was just using Shop Savvy to demonstrate how a dev had tweaked the camera to make it use continuous auto focus, and point out that once one had managed to hack the camera, its only a matter of time till others add extra features too

I don't mind the slight press of the shutter button, but I do mind how long it takes afterwards to actually snap the shot. Even on my SLR it doesn't take so long to complete the photo. Sometimes by the time I hear the shutter go off, I've already moved the phone. Maybe it's just me, any suggestions?

What we need to remember is that primarily the G1 is a phone witha camea and lots of other extras bolted on

In no way can it even begin to compete with anything but the basic digital compact camera, and SLR's are just in a different league

The G1 in ityself produces pretty good images in good light, it fails when in poor light, this is probally due to non adjustable ISO (sensitivty of the sensor).
It would also be greatly improved with inclusion of exposure compensation (brightness, to the unfamilar amongs us), and most definatly with some form of white balance adjustement. The latter will help to avoid strange colour casts when taking pics under artificial light

The ISO is most likely a hardware issue, but the exposure comp and WB can no doubt be done thru software upgrades

I finally got it to work, also there is an app called aSettings, if you set the display brightness up as high as it can go, thru the app.

Then your dark light pictures come out much better.

Surely that is just affecting the brightness of the display, and in no way will it alter he operation of the camera

I have just thought of another trick that the devs of Shop Savvey and other barcode reades have managed to eek out of the camera

In addition to the fulltime auto focus, the have somehow enabled the camera to take a shot immediatly that the barcode is recognised

There is virtually no shutter lag at all

that is true the barcode scanner has almost no lag! how come the picture mode cant do that?

k so i found out that if you get an app called SnapPhoto you can disable the focus. You can also do other things like special effects and night shot. But it will allow you to snap pictures much faster.

If you also go to the SnapPhoto, devolpers site, it reveals a few hidden gems in the camera software, Like ZOOM, its there just not enabled by Google

wow. I'm definitely gonna have to try this one. I already have the Shop Savvy app downloaded.

On a side note... even though it's just a pic of a spoon handle, that's pretty nice quality coming from the Android. That's one of my main disappointments with the phone - the camera quality.

I can highly recomend that everyone downloads the latest version of SnapPhoto from the Marketplace

It adds so many new feature to the camera, it like having a different model, the dev has also managed to speed up the picture tsaking process too, not fully point & click but most certainly 100% improvement on the shipped camera software

BTW - I am in no way connected with the dev, but all credit to his acheivments

yes i agree he has done a great job with it. The only thing i really dont like is that even if the place you are in is in a dim or yellow light the camera is very dark.

Read in another thread somewhere that "autofocus" is initialized when the left side of the camera button is depressed and the capture is initialized almost in a rolling motion to the right side of the button. Checked it out and seems to be true. Same thread noted that pressing the trackball will initialize capture faster too.

Gonna have to check out this SnapPhoto app.

My godfathers car. I love how good this camera is! I don't have a digital camera but this is amazing quality in my opinion.
