Good point. Basically these are still too experimental and buggy. The good news is at least they are surfacing

Yeah.. this is quite nostalgic. Back in March or so the Eris was exploited and the wait for custom ROMs was satisfied shortly there after by several developers; all of a sudden many choices were springing up, with people swearing this or that ROM was "the best."

One of the fabulous outcomes of all of that was the appearance of Froyo ROMs.. three notable ones: Nonsensikal, Tazz and Kaos (Cyanogen based). I am thinking that after a bit we will be seeing the same things happening here.

It's happened (see post #10 ), otherwise I'd never have rooted this new Fascinate.

I even tested the un-root method so that I could receive the update, which went well, then re-rooted following the update.

Relax, we're covered.

Yeah, but there is a complete return to stock

Stupid question. Why root? Can one just remove bloat or hide it. For me, there is enough storage that I don't need the extra free spacefrom rooting. Can someone detail a few reasons to root besides removing bloat? What is so special about "custom roms"?

once you go root you'll never ask why again

basically, as your fellow android friends release roms and kernels etc....you can make your phone be much more responsive and be much more the way you want it

Not a stupid question; one of the smartest questions here.

I felt the same way about my Eris. Of course the Eris is a device with a slower processor and less memory, but mine ran fine so I had nothing to "correct" by rooting the device.

However I did root the device and it was the best thing I ever did.

In the old days of cell phones it was not possible to do anything with them other than add data such as names and phone numbers. Well, that's all changed.

Think about it: as individuals we customize just about everything in our environment, from the rooms in our home, our yards, our cars, our looks (hair, tattoos, etc), what we eat and etc. Well, you don't have to root your Fascinate to customize it.. but you can.

Yeah very legitimate question. If you are pleased with your phone as is then why change it? Its the old adage if it aint broke dont fix it. The best analogy I can give you is from the computer world. Many people are very content to purchase a PC from HP or Dell. It does what they ask and expect and thats all the want and need. However, there is an element of the population which realizes the PC you bought from Dell running at 3Ghz can actually be tweaked to run at 4Ghz. Or the boot up time can be taken from 40 seconds to 30 seconds. Basically rooting and that whole mindset is an extension on personalizing and customization. Making your phone your own and not what the manufacturer tells you it should be.

It certainly was a good question, and this is a great answer. I have noticed improved speed and battery life by rooting and applying other tweaks to the phone. I noticed similar improvements rooting the Droid X as well. And with one click or close to one-click root options, and relatively easy unrootability it can really provide a lot of benefits with a minimal risk. I am really enjoying my rooted Fascinate.

In fact, I'm typing on my laptop that's using the free wireless tether app because my mom's internet sucks right now (someone is downloading iTunes crap on it...). So I'm using Verizon's speedy 3G instead, and at the same time my little brother and son are playing Angry Birds on it.
