A possible solution to battery issues after sept 16 update!!

Over at AndroidCentral forums, someone posted a possible solution to the battery issues after sept 16 update. Apparently it seems like the media hub runs a DRM service app which does not let the phone sleep. Killing it after using media hub helps with the battery. Also, do not kill the gtalk service app, this also causes battery to drain quickly. Here is the link to the thread.

I will try this. So now to save battery we have to boot phone up. Rember to toggle Airplane mode on then off...and kill the DRM service. Whew....I think Im going to order the cheap non OME batteries of ebay with the charger. Anyone do this yet?
P.S. I love the phone. Just want better battery life when its not even being used.

Hah, I noticed this service and tried killing it yesterday, but I also killed the gtalk app and didn't see any difference in battery life. I just rebooted my phone and only killed the DRM service, so let's see if that does anything.

I was going to post my solution to this problem in my own thread, but I'll just append to this one instead.

Like many others, I noticed a marked decrease in battery life after the DI07 update. Here are the steps I followed that fixed the problem:

• I drained the battery completely.
• I charged the phone with the phone off. (So, basically, while the phone is charging all you see is the big battery icon.)
• When the battery became fully charged, I kept the phone plugged in and booted into the OS.
• After Android had booted, it thought the battery wasn't fully charged (WTF?), so I let it finish charging.
• After the OS thought the battery had fully charged, I unplugged the phone and used it as I normally do.

It's been 2 days since this happened and the phone seems to be behaving normally (as far as power consumption is concerned). I'd give this a shot before killing services and whatnot.

You're absolutely correct and it was something I did within a few days of first purchasing the phone weeks ago. However, the DI07 update seems to have done something to negate the initial "conditioning".

So, in other words, what I'm trying to say is: "Reconditioning" the battery seems to fix the power consumption problem with the DI07 update.

On a side note: I don't think "conditioning" is really the correct term to use. I admit I'm speaking from ignorance, but I don't think anything is really being done to the battery when the process I outlined previously is followed. My guess is that the battery meter in the OS is just being calibrated. If anyone knows otherwise, please speak up!

Ok this fix definitely appears to be working for me. I'm now at about 7 hours unplugged and my battery is at 48%. I'm getting almost twice the battery life now, and this is basically what I was getting before the update!

The OP in the linked thread says it is listed as DRM. I dont have epic, so cant check. But here is his reply.

This didn't work for me. Even after I killed the media hub app. My phone still won't go to sleep. I am going to trade my phone in for an evo tomorrow.

You'll regret going to the evo. It has it's own problems and the epic is better. Every phone has glitches when it first comes out. Give it some time and they will all be worked out.

How does one check their awake time? I can only find "Up time" (Under: Settings > About Phone > Status) and the running time since unplugged (Under: Settings > About Phone > Battery Use).

I use the spare parts app to check awake time. Open battery history in spare parts.

This works great! I swapped batteries around 10 pm, last night. my battery is at 41% 14 hours later. I Froze all 3 DRM instances with Titanium. No need to mess with it anymore. Thank you thank you thank you!

Hi Dug there are a plenty of us that hav ordered that; I actually, although it says non OEM, they look identical to me as far as the 2 batteries that came with it; & too, charging the batteries on that cradle charger seems to be wayyy better in terms of battery life versus the normal charging (for me @ least).. Jus rite now, I'm lookin @ it now & its been on for 23hrs & 43mins. granted its blinking but its been blinking about 2+ hrs...

What works great for you? Killing DRM. How did u freeze DRM, are u rooted or can I also use Titanium?

Freezing DRM works for me. I am rooted and used Titanium for root users. Why would you not root? If you want to go back to the stock ROM, just flash it with Oden. Then, root is gone and you are back to factory OEM.
Anyway, the phone has been unplugged, with heavy use, for 18 hours and is now at 16% charge. Before freezing DRM, I would have to swap batteries after 5-7 hours every day.

For those who can't find the three DRM tasks to kill: Download Advanced Task Killer, launch it and go to Settings > Security Level and select Low. All of the DRM processes will become visible under Task Killer's Kill window.

Instinctively, we think we want higher security until we realize that TK is talking about protecting hidden processes from the user!

Are you saying that if you don't use media hub then there is no need to kill the service app?

My batttery life has to be half what it was before. I think Friday will be my 30 day return time frame. I really liked the phone before the update. I still like it, but just worried about the battery life. How do we go about complaining to Samsung so we can see if can get some support for this issue on the next update?
