Root Please help unroot to 2.2

I rooted my incredible and want to go back to stock 2.2.

The threads I looked at are a bit confusing (to me) as to how to do it. If there is one, could someone please point me to a step-by-step guide to unrooting back to 2.2? When I looked at this thread http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/181255-how-downgrade-official-2-2-a.html
the link doesn't match up exactly. The thread says it is 169MB, the file is 170MB, is that ok?

Are there newer links that work?

I downloaded the s-on tool from unrevoked forever, but I'm not sure how to apply it. I'm not doing this to return it, I just want to go back to stock.

I'd appreciate all the help I can get. I think I got in over my head by rooting and I'd just like it all to be simpler. I'll have to live with the drawbacks of stock.

I listed the file size just because it's more common that many realize to unknowingly get a partial download. Clockwork is smart enough to realize this and it spits out an error but I'm not sure if this is the case when loading a file from hboot. I just like to play it on the safe side and tell people the whole story so they can proceed safely and with the highest chance for postive results. This is why I also followed in Adrynalyne's footsteps of listing the MD5 sum that can be easily verified to be sure you're getting the proper, legit file. I believe the file size is actually 169.93MB which on my relic XP machine shows up as 169MB. You may be reading 170MB which is fine. The point is, you don't want to end up with a file size that is way low which would indicate a bad download.

Couple other thoughts. You don't have to utilize the root if you are having second thoughts. You can just leave things the way they are and run your phone as though it's not rooted. Just don't download root programs and don't grant any Superuser access. Skip the flashing of ROMs and kernels. You have to make specific decisions and actions to use the power of root and you can choose not to. Then, one day if you truly NEED to be unrooted, you can always cross that bridge when you get there.

With that said, if you REALLY want to unroot, by all means use my thread or any other, it doesn't matter to me, just make sure you are using a verified, trusted file when doing so. Any PB31IMG.zip that was taken from the official 2.2 RUU will have the same MD5 sum and can be checked using the method I outlined in that thread.

Thanks for the quick and thorough reply. Now I'm confused! I'm just finding the setting up of my phone to be a pain, and I"m not sure how to get some of the things I had before: verizon backup assistant is not putting my contacts on the phone, I don't know how to (or even if I can) get my Tasker profiles back, etc. Plus, I was hoping it would solve the issue I've had since 2.2, of Sense restarting, but that problem has remained. This is where my lack of experience tells me that maybe I shouldn't have done this. So I'll have to decide.

Can you advise on how to use the S-on tool, or should I even bother?

Well, if you go back to stock 2.2 you'll have to set everything back up again during that process too. How did you end up on 2.2 in the first place, OTA? If you do end up going to stock, you might as well do s-on since it sounds like you are not interested in future rooting efforts. I can't explain it any better than they explain it here:

Also, I've looked at that page a few times and I don't see instructions how to use the S-on tool. The file has two parts, meta-inf and patch, and I'm embarrassed to say, I don't know what to do with them.

Ok, you've got that file.. if not... try this: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

Download My Backup Pro from the market, back up your data/apps to your sd card

Make sure your SD card is formatted to fat32 if its not fat32, back up all data to your computer first.

Put that file you have/downloaded on the root of the sd

Shut phone down, do vol down and power, phone will scan that file and ask if you want to update, hit vol up for yes

it will roll you back to stock unrooted with fresh install

setup your google account and stuff, download my back up pro again and now restore your stuff.. only restore the apps you need, dont worry about about the stock apps.. good luck.

I'm not sure what method you used to get to 2.2 but rooting does not delete your data.

For the S-On tool, scroll down to the FAQ section in the link I posted and look for:

The instructions are right above the download link. They are the same as when applying Unrevoked Forever. You are looking inside the zip to find the inf/patch which is not necessary. You leave it zipped and place onto your SD card, then load using Clockwork.

I really doubt it man. Like I said, you should not have lost any data due to rooting alone. If you still had all that data at the time you rooted, and if you did a nandroid backup per the instructions you used, you can try to get them back right now by doing a nadroid restore. This would be especially likely to work if you've flashed any Roms since you rooted without using an app backup program like Titanium Backup or similar.

Just follow the same "backup" instructions from the thread you already used except instead of choosing backup, this time you'll choose restore. You should see a file who's name is the date you rooted the phone. That's the one you want to restore. Let it restore, when it's done it will notifiy you. Once that occurs, the option to reboot should be highlighted, if not use the volume keys to highlight it. Press the trackpad once to reboot and check and see if your stuff is back.

That worked, and now I am much more relaxed. Got all my data back. Thank you so much.

I am still rooted, but running stock sense after the recovery. I have ROM manager installed and have backed up to My Backup Pro (and also some stuff to Titanium). I'd appreciate it if someone would explain how I can go back to the rooted ROM I was using and still have my data. Thanks in advance.
