Trade Captivate for Nexus One, opinions would be great!

So I had someone offer to trade their att branded nexus one that's been rooted with the cyanogen mod, whatever that means, and its also unlocked but im sure they all come unlocked from google. What do you guys think?

I'm wondering peoples opinions because
1) I never've played around with a nexus one
2) I don't know if they would be an equivalent trade

Ive been spoiled by this SAMOLED screen but I keep having browser issues where pretty often it says web page unavailable and I have to hit refresh. That happened on my last captivate too. Then of course the gps issue, today it kept re routing me and jumping around to current streets while driving. I also have the youtube widget constantly failing stop I have to delete and re-add since the gps fix update. These aren't total deal breakers but what I would look forward to with a nexus one would be the open source and getting updates quickly and resale value.

how is the screen on the nexus? Do you think its still pretty good after seeing the captivates? any input on what you think the pros/cons would be to swapping to the nexus one would be greatly appreciated. Don't get me wrong I LOVE the captivate and I think its a great phone I just don't know what the froyo update will bring or when but that's just something about the styling of the nexus I've been in love with.

you would be getting the lesser end of the deal, the nexus ones have died out, they are not even for sale any longer. the only thing that it has a plus on is that it has froyo, but the captivate will be getting it. the n1 is a nice phone and was by far the best when it came out, but its falling behind now. once the captivate gets froyo it will be faster in every possible way, the gpu isnt up to par with phones now either, watch videos on youtube of it vs the captivate and its pretty pitiful looking. the n1 has a amoled screen but its no samoled.

yeah you would be losing out a little, the nexus really is a DEV phone, its SUPER configurable and fun to mod but it is starting to get a little dated. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a cheap phone with GPS to use for everyday crap and keep the sammy to ROOT, you have yet to see the potential of that phone, it is ridiculous how sick it is after the lag fix, or flash a rom and your gps will be pretty much fixed for the most part and you will have a phone that puts down one the highest quadrant scores of any phone. The samsung is nasty. my phone ran a 883 before the lag fix now its running 2350. KEEP IT.

I'd say just go with the iPhone. It's not really flawed, it has really good customer support, and it's not dead, for one. The Nexus One is discontinued and I have to doubt that more updates will be out for it later on such as Gingerbread or anything else...Go for another Android, but not the Nexus One...

I disagree. The iPhone 4 has a major defect, equipped with an unconventional, and poorly designed external antenna there's been nothing but problems. So bad that Apple had to give away fee cases to prevent dropped calls and internet connections. I know I'm on my third one. The huge mistake I made was trusting Apple and pre ordering this phone before they were released, therefore there was no way for me to know.

This is quite confusing. One minute the suggestion is buy an
iPhone, the next its buy Android?

Here's my opinion, I've had a Nexus One and they are quite nice, but not for someone new to Android.

The Android alternatives with AT&T are limited, they really don't have a whole lot. If you can, go with the Evo or Droid X. This is if you want to stick with Android. As for the IPhone4, with a nice case, you don't have antenna issues and you'll know that Apple does update its products. At least the antenna problem you can workaround but the GPS issues with the Captivate have no solution.

I just called my local AT&T store and I'm waiting for a call from the manager. The guy I spoke to had the Captivate and returned it for all the reasons you mentioned here and for the same ones I'm complaining about. If I do change it, it will be for an IPhone4, there are at least 60 here at work and after the latest update you don't hear anyone complaining about the phone. I'll also miss the 4" display of the captivate, colors are beautiful but I can't deal any longer with this GPS nightmare. Whenever I want to go somewhere or look something up that requires GPS, it's a mission.

I disagree with your disagreement. I was anticipating the death grip issue when I exchanged my captivate for an iphone 4. I did not have it, and today (about 2 months later) I have dropped 1 call. Yes, one call. I cannot make the bars go down, I cannot make the internet stop.

Do some have this issue - absolutely, do all of them not at all. I personally think it's more of an issue of where one is in relation to quality of ATT service - having said, that, I WAS able to create a grip - wiithout trying, where my bars went down with the captivate - ironic eh?

Apples biggest flaws are 2. Jobs is a pompous wind bag, and Itunes is TOO easy to use.

Android - I can customize my phone to have widgets twirl (or whatever) on my home screen - sorry, it's not enough.

And if iphone makes their next one with say a 3.4 or 4" screen - I'd suggest it will be game over.

Oh, they will need to add swype too - that is the ONLY thing I miss 2 months later.

but not the way most publicized. yes, the antenna design was stupid, but practically, it's not much of an issue. I do have a case, but even w/o one, I haven't been able to induce the 'drop'.
however, this nice piece of hardware is hopelessly crippled by software that is simply put, '******ed by design'. I might be able to live with some of the major limitations like lack of wifi tether, but the phone just doesn't let you make it work for *you*. The configuration options are so few and far between that even basic notification settings are absent. Not to mention the wifi bug that no-one seems to talk much about. so, for 'power-saving' the phone turns off wifi when it sleeps. Fine, right? except that it does this even if an app (in the forground) is using the data connection. SO you start off 1 of 10 podcast updates connected to wifi, and the phone sleeps, and the rest go down over 3g, and *you* get to pay for it. awesome. FAIL.
There are just too many engineered-in limitations that make this phone one kludgy workaround after another... I've spent more time trying to work around the blatent ******ation that is iOS than I ever did on my craptivate.

If that's truly the extent that you determined Android differs from an iPhone, then you're either naive, a fanboy, trolling, or all of the above.

Even a respectable Apple fan can acknowledge the fast list of fundamental system design differences and differing philosophies behind the two devices.

Obviously there's no point in discussing the matter with you, so I hope you find your iPhone forum and spare us any more trolling posts.

Are you running Juice Defender or any other battery saver app? I know when I ran JD, I always had to wait for the light to turn green, otherwise I would get the same error.

nope not running JD or any battery saver app

Thanks for the suggestions. I hope AT&T comes out with more Android options before the end of the year since I'm unable to switch carriers at this time since I'm still under a Family Plan (college student here). I checked out the iPhone 4 again yesterday when my friend was picking up an Aria. I just can't seem to want to go back to the same old boring layout of the iOS. I had the iPhone 2g and 3gs before and while i LOVED my 2g at the time when i went to the 3gs I got bored with the OS, although the IP4 is a nice piece of design.

I'm going to do the Unleash The Beast on my Captivate and hold out for another month or two i suspect in hopes of froyo and any other fixes!

Thanks for all the input, I hope they come out with the Desire soon

Also, I'm interested in learning how to develop apps, so I'll go read up on it some but any tips on how to get started would be great, although something tells me there's already a thread for that. :p

Well, if he's resorting to the Nexus One, it's probably because he's stuck with AT&T and the 2nd best Android phone on AT&T..well, there isn't really one that matches up well. I did use an iPhone 4 for a few days, as well as on an iPhone forums for the last three yeras, and there's two things I know. First of all, the problem is exagerrated. I mean, if you clasped your iPhone for a few seconds you'd see the signal decrease, but still, it would never hit 0 and it's only the visual bars that change. Second, less than 40 percent of the people have this issue. After all the pressure Apple went through, they were FORCED to give out something to shut the people up, and they had no where else to go with it. As for the Nexus One, my choice was to go with this phone until I heard about the Captivate which basically is an upgraded Nexus One and for AT&T, the iPhone 4 is better than the Nexus One. I just got bored of an iPhone after about three years and preferred to work with Android now, else I would have gone with the iPhone 4 as well. But yeah, here's your order for AT&T. Captivate, iPhone 4/3GS, then Nexus One.
