Hi all,
I have an HTC HERO. ive had the phone for a few months now and have neevr updated anything on it. The problem i have it that the headphone icon was on all the time. Went to the shop (Orange), they said phone Htc which i did. They didnt help much apart from saiying do a Factory reset. Then one day it went off bye itself. The problem now is that when i plug the headphones in to listen to music it doesnt work.

I think i need to do a Factory Reset and update the ROM etc on me phone.

Is there an App out there which can save me contacts and sms.

Slug knows more about this than me, but I believe I've heard inserting/removing the jack much more slowly helps the phone detect it.

The issue here seemed to be ROM-specific, as it disappeared when I updated and hasn't returned.

Carl, if you're still running the 1.76.xx.xx firmware build I'd advise updating to the latest 2.73.xx.xx for Orange as others with jack recognition problems have reported that updating fixed it.

I did remember you talking about it in another thread, but I didn't realise that in your case it was a firmware bug not a hardware one. What ROM were you on at the time?

It appeared with Elelinux 1.8, and vanished just as mysteriously with 1.9.

Hi All,

Can some one explain to me if i need to update the firmware or anything else. Also is it possable to save txt messages to sim card or any other way. as if i do a re boot i dont want to lose them.

SMS Backup & Restore That's how I save them between firmwares.

And yeah, android 2.1 is available for the Hero now. If you go to Settings >> About Phone, what's your build number listed as?

The build is1.76.61.3 146733 CL#46012. Not sure if you need the whole number but there it is.

Well, you're definitely in need of a firmware update! That's one of the original 1.5 firmwares, of which there were 2 or 3 for Orange Heroes. Then there's the new 2.1 firmware too.

Unfortunately the only way to get the 2.1 update (which is delivered straight to the phone via the internet), is to be on the most recent 1.5 firmware, which you'll find here.

You install it via the PC and possibly will need HTC Sync (from their website) installed as well. This one will wipe your phone entirely, so everything on the phone it's self needs to be backed up. Your sdcard contents and everything synchronised to google will be safe, but you'll need to back up your apps and SMS messages and possibly your contacts, if they aren't synced to google. (Paid apps are still linked to your account, don't worry, but your free apps won't be listed in the market when you switch over, hence the need for a backup).

In an idoit guide can you explain on how i do all over the above. (sync and update) please.

Ok, so first you need HTC Sync installed on your PC. You can download it from here. Then you can install the latest 1.5 firmware (found here) and then the phone should ask you if you want to install the 2.1 OTA update.

The first two links I gave you contain instructions on how to use them and the OTA update is pretty automated, but if you need any more help just ask
