I know I'm beating a dead horse BUT....

I have done my homework. I have played with both phones. I have read and read and read and watched reviews and everything else and I still can't decide! I have a HTC Hero and am worried about the Evo being buggy and crazy like my HEro has been. There are days when it won't even dial for like a minute and it's a replacement to my other Hero! I was all set on the Evo because when my Hero does work, I like it. The only thing that has worried me is the camera and the GPS. I have a 20 month old and take pics and videos nonstop of him and post them on FB. I use GPS a lot as well. What do you Evo and Epic users think? If there's not that much of a difference I am going with the Evo because it's what I'm used to but that Epic keeps looking better and better.
Please be kind...I'm a newbie! :)

I'm having the same dilemma. I had a white EVO, but really didn't like the white back.

I got the Epic, which I have now. I miss the slightly bigger screen, and the SAMOLED screen is nice, but I personally didn't see much of a difference (I'm somewhat colorblind, though, so take that FWIW). I've already exchanged one that had a wobbly keyboard, and the second one does, too, when it's closed. When it's open it's solid. The GPS is down right awful. I'm not 100% convinced it's a software only issue, and I don't want to risk waiting to see til after my 30-day trial.

What makes me reluctant to go back to the Evo is the better cpu & gpu. And I liked the *idea* of having a keyboard. The Epic's 'sleep' functionality with 4G is pretty nice. And the video camera is significantly better quality with video and audio.

However, I'm coming from an iPhone 3G, where I didn't play graphically intensive games, nor did I have a keyboard or video camera and I got along just fine.

I've gone ahead and ordered an Evo from LetsTalk.com (for only $164 shipped!) and the Epic is going back. I figure in a few months when the Epics kinks are worked out, I might sell the Evo and go back again. Or maybe something new will be out by then. We'll see.

As you said, a dead horse. Here you go:

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/110482-evo-4g-vs-epic-4g.html

And the fact that the thread is so long is proof that neither phone stands out. They both have advantages and disadvantages. So the choice is yours:

1) read 69 pages of people debating the same 5 things
2) make up your own mind and just get a phone. And make the most out of whichever you decide.

I don't understand why people get rude on some of these threads. If the thread irritates you, don't respond. It's as easy as that. Clearly there are still people debating and WANTING to discuss this topic.
Sorry...had to rant! I hate feeling like I should post a thread because someone might scold me.

Believe me, I had the Hero before and it was super buggy. I had the dialer issue too and everything about it used to make me mad at times except for the fact that I loved the android operating system. Now after owning the EVO since launch day, I finally feel like I am truly satisfied with my phone. I see and research new phones but have yet to have an urge to want a new phone whereas when I was with the Hero I wanted every new phone that came out. I actually almost convinced myself to switch to the iPhone 4 before it launched but am so much happier that I stuck with Sprint and went with the EVO. Sprint and HTC have been great with the EVO and the support continues to be there. It is a completely different experience with android and the EVO.

I know exactly what you are saying! I told my husband God forbid anything should ever happen where I need to dial 911 because it'll take FOREVER to dial IF it even does! I would click on a contact and wait and wait only to finally tap it again when it had been almost a minute and nothing had happened. Then, it would dial the number twice and one would be on hold while I talked on the other line to the same number! It drove me crazy, which is why I am having PTSD issues related to getting another HTC! But like I said, when it worked I did love it. I like the point made about the camera and video camera is better than what's on my Hero and I actually like the camera on the hero so that makes me feel better. Darn Sprint for making this so difficult! LOL! I don't like that I would have to pay the restocking fee if I change my mind.

I had the Hero, too... for a few months. I HATED it. Hated. I hated it so much that I vowed to never get another phone made by HTC OR another Android phone.

Clearly I went back on both of those, because I now have the Evo. It's not perfect by any means. It's still a little glitchy... but nothing like the Hero. That phone was awful. I've lasted almost four months with the Evo now... that's twice as long as I kept the Hero. I wouldn't worry too much, it's a good phone.

That said, my mom has the Epic and it's fantastic too. :p

LOL! I also vowed not to get another HTC! I've never had problems with Samsung but then again I've never had a Samsung smartphone.
I guess it's just going to come down to the camera/camcorder difference and I'll have to talk to the Sprint peeps about the GPS. From what I've read the GPS issue only relates to walking and not so much to driving but IDK how accurate that is.
I also REALLY don't want to have to wait for an update in software again like I had to with the Hero and go through that whole issue again. I ended up getting a new phone due to the failed update on my phone. Oh, decisions...decisions!

I'm not really sure what you mean by that.

The GPS issue is that it takes several minutes to lock on to satellites, despite being able to see them. Once, while standing under a completely clear sky, my Epic could see 11 satellites but only connected to one after 25 minutes.

Also, the accuracy is being reported as about 30 meters. This, however, might just be a hard coded value and isn't accurate.

In addition, the GPS chip itself appears to be very weak. In my house, the Epic doesn't even see satellites in the same place that my iPhone 3G is accurate down to 1 meter.

That last part is what makes me fear it's a hardware rather than a software issue.

i think most issues with the Hero is related to speed and power... which in turn causes other issues.

EVO is more powerful than the Hero and has more functions. It is a lot better than the HERO.

Your 2 most important issues...
EVO Camera is a lot better than the HERO by a lot!
EPIC is better than EVO by a little.

EVO GPS is better than the Hero by a little.
EPIC GPS is worse than the HERO by (not sure). This may be a software issue, but my guess it is more!

The power of the EVO is more than enough for the things you want and you should be very happy. Epic is more powerfull than the EVO by a little, but brings a lot of other issues to the table. You will need to do research to find all the discussions of it. The things u want to do dont need the extra power of the Epic.

so.. to answer your question based on what I think of your needs.... EVO is the way to go.

Good luck

Most helpful response ever! Thank you for breaking it down for me! Like I said I am a BIG newbie! I guess I will go with the Evo then. You're right, I'm not even going to know the difference between the camera on the Epic and Evo since the Evo is already going to be better than my hero. My Hero did a great job recording stuff and I never had a problem with the audio. Thank you again!

Evo or Epic would be better than dealing with the Hero! Honestly stick with HTC. They specialize in mobile phones. Samsung is a jack of all trades. No dedication for there mobile phones. I would suggest the Evo because it feels better. It seems to be made better than the Epic. The Epic does feel cheap or hollow. Plus you will miss smart dial and other things like sense music player widget and email widgets.
