Help Disappearing Pictures?

I've noticed numerous pictures and videos have just disappeared from my phone, ever since I installed 2.2. I thought maybe I had just deleted one video that I noticed was gone, but in looking last night, I found about 14 pictures, and 2 videos were gone. I know I had them before the 2.2 update, and I know most of them were still on my phone a few days after the update, but now are gone. I have not read about this being a problem with 2.2, but maybe others haven't noticed yet, or maybe it's just my phone?

Did you connect to your PC via USB PC Mode by any chance? I've had this happen several times, including last night. Gigs worth of pictures were deleted from my card.

Yes I did. After I did the 2.2 update, it wouldn't connect to my notebook and crashed my phone several times until I got the drivers reloaded on my notebook, but it connected fine to my desktop. I don't know exactly when the pictures were deleted...I'm going to try to follow more closely. I saved myself on some of them by using Lookout (I back up my pics there, and since I was in NY and couldn't connect to my computer, I was able to get most of my pics back but not videos.)

This is a definite problem then. I was afraid it was just my phone but sounds like it's further reaching than that. (sigh)

I have a replacement phone coming tomorrow...hopefully it'll work ok, but I'm certainly not very optimistic.

Have you been able to confirm deletions right after you connect via USB?

Well, I initially experienced this issue twice when I first got my phone. And early on, I used "PC Mode" to transfer my data. After awhile, I stopped using PC Mode in favor of Mass Storage mode, so I only used that and "Charge Only" mode whenever connected to the PC. I didn't lose any pictures during that time.

It wasn't until someone suggested hooking up via PC Mode to stop the Battery Manager Force Close that I lost my pictures again. So I'm thinking there's specifically a problem with PC Mode. I didn't even do anything other than connect via PC Mode, then switch back to Charge Only mode before disconnecting the phone. After that -- I had a lot more space on my SD card and far fewer photos.

Thankfully I had backed up the photos already. I plan to put them back on the phone this evening and see how it goes.

Thanks again for your input. I'm going to mess around with it some tonight. I had not clicked PC Mode at all, until after 2.2 when I was trying to get my phone to connect to my notebook.

If you would, please update us what you find out about the PC Mode, and I'll do the same.

I have never connected to my computer using PC mode, I set my phone to USB/mass storage mode in the very beginning and never changed it. However I too lost just about all of my pictures and most of my video's when switching over to 2.2. I wasn't really thrilled about that.

Same here, I've lost about 150 pictures and four videos. Never hooked up with anything other than MSD mode either. They all dissapeared after froyo. Not just camera photos either, downloaded and transferred pictures as well. I've read on other forums that people think it's caused from not disconnecting properly but some have seen photos disappear within a half hour of taking them without even hooking up to their computer.

I definitely had this occur with 2.1 as well, so it's not just the update to Froyo that's causing it. I really wonder what's going on.

I just spent 45 mins copying my photos *back* to the SD card. I hope they stay there ...

Here's the strange part, I have 'VideoVault' that stores your... ummm, well NWS video's out of plain site. Well I lost almost all of the video's that weren't in the protected part of the 'VideoVault', but all the one's that were in the vault are still there. I don't know why the unprotected one's got slaughtered though?

For those that have lost pics or videos, were the files stored in the dcim/camera folder? I *think* mine all were. If it's only deleting files from that folder, is there a way to have the pics/vids saved in another folder by default? This might help if it's not the camera/gallery deleting these files.

I lost photos in dcim/camera and in my own subfolders under /pics which I had created on the SD card. It did not discriminate on the folder location. Makes me wonder if it's something with the Gallery or mediascanner. It finds all the photos and displays them (ie. contacts, wallpapers, etc -- all of which were deleted from my phone).

If rooted, would changing permissions on the photo folders to read-only (once you've stored them in a custom folder, that is) prevent them from being wiped? Is this even possible?

I have also had this happen to me in 2.1 and 2.2. In fact it just randomly happened this morning.

Last night I hooked up to my home desktop to transfer a video to the phone via USB mass storage mode. The file copied, I switched the Charge Only mode to undock the SD card, and my phone reset itself. So i unhooked the USB cable while it was doing this. I had about 20 pictures, and one video.

Pictures in DCIM folder, and the video in a folder called videos.

This morning, I come into work, and hook my phone up to my laptop for charging. It recognizes my phone as already in USB mass storage mode. I check the gallery to see if my pictures deleted...somehow, my gallery is suddenly full of the 120+ pictures that have been randomly deleted since I've had this phone. So I undock (go back to charge only mode), disconnect the phone, and look at my gallery again...not only do those 120+ pictures disappear (in a different range of folders), but also my pictures in my gallery, 10 of those have disappeared. My video is now gone from my videos folder. Yet somehow, my isyncr folder remains intact with all of my music.

This is a seriously frustrating bug I've experienced in both 2.1 and 2.2. Considering I work in construction, and I'm constantly taking photos with my phone, have photos just generally DISAPPEAR is unacceptable.

If anyone figures this problem out, please direct message me or something.

I had constant troubles with gallery. Crashing, freezing, not showing media etc. Eventually I found a .nomedia file on the same path level as my DCIM folder which housed the photos.
It wasn't in the DCIM itself (where I was looking) just in the same folder as the DCIM. It was also screwing up Quickpic which I had installed. Removed that one nomedia file and all was back to normal.

/mnt/sdcard/DCIM
/mnt/sdcard/.nomedia - erased.

no idea which program put that nomedia file in there, but it was damn annoying.
