My top seven (in no particular order):

a. The legend of Hell House (lousy cinematography but it's one of the best "technical" horror films of it's genre)

b. The Silence of the Lambs (Anthony Hopkins plays Hannibal Lector like no other actor could)

c. Constantine (not really true to it's comic book roots but I'm a sucker for Rachel Weiss in a tub of water).

d. Evil Dead (again not an especially scary movie but it stars my favorite B mobie actor).

e. Rocky Horror Picture Show (A cult classic albeit not a really horror movie by any stretch of the imagination!)

f. The Pit and the Pendulum (a classic Edgar Allan Poe story starring Vincent Price)

g. Poltergeist

Alright just for kicks any new movies that you guys have seen recently that maybe caught your eye??
Dying breed...any movie that has a creepy town and cannibal people who live there has my eye.

Last couple 'horror' films I watched:
In the Mouth of Madness:
In the Mouth of Madness (1995) - IMDb

Ravenous:
Ravenous (1999) - IMDb

Both are fairly main-stream though.

Cinemassacre is doing a "camp cult" review of campy horror movies this month. A different movie every day:
Cinemassacre Productions

Night of the Demon (1980):
Night of the Demon (1980) - IMDb
Looks really bizzare. A Bigfoot running around tearing people apart.

Ok not all of these movies are terrifying but I feel that they fit nicely into my list so, here it goes, in no particular order:

1. Shaun of the Dead - Because I still rofl when I watch it
2. The Shining - The first scary movie that I ever saw
3. 28 Days Later - Just a really well made "zombie" film
4. American Werewolf in London - First werewolf movie that actually scared me
5. The Howling - just a great werewolf movie
6. Let The Right One In - My favorite vampire movie(the american remake is pretty awesome too)
7. Trick r' Treat - Supposed to be released in 2005 got pushed all the way back to like 2009, just a great Halloween themed film
8. Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The first movie that made me lose sleep
9. From Dusk Till Dawn - Just an awesome movie
10. The Orphanage - Pretty creepy spanish film done by Guillermo del Toro
11. Monster Squad - Not scary but it's a really awesome film
12. Oldboy - Korean Murder Suspense Thriller, this movie will f**k up your life
13. Killer Klown From Outerspace - Go me over my fear of clowns
14. 30 Days of Night - I think this is one of the most well done vampire movies that i have seen

Hey bust this thread back open. I love horror. I'm what you call a movie buff, and horror is my all time favorite genre. I can't give you a list of my favorites, because I pretty much like it all. I can give you a list of movies I can't stand...

1) Rob Zombie's Halloween 2
2) Saw (yeah I said it!)
3) Rob Zombie's The Blob. (yeah so its not even greenlit yet, but I'm sure he'll f*** it up. Rob should stick to his own films and stop doing remakes.)

BTW, who remembers...

That's a great picture flick right there!

I don't see many foreign movies in this thread...not that I'm not into American horror films, there are some really great ones, but if you're a true horror buff you should check out Martyrs (French), the Orphanage (Spanish), and Oldboy (Korean). I did see someone mention those last two.

The vampire genre is one that is sorely lacking in film IMO... I think the best FILM that also happens to be a vampire movie is Interview with the Vampire, and that movie is not scary in the slightest. Lost Boys is probably my favorite vampire movie though. Other than that, meh. I thought 30 Days of Night was kind of lame.
