I have a sprint htc hero version currently running version 1.5. I have been reading some threads on here for a few days and with all the terms and names of programs it is pretty confusing. I had a few questions.

- if I wanted to root my phone is there an advantage to upgrading to 2.1 first or should I stay with 1.5? If so where do I get update?

- Should I follow the manual root or just do a one click automatic root?

- When the phone is rooted can it be tethered to apple products?

Thank anyone who helps so much.

No, there is no advantage to upgrading to 2.1 to root, you can root 1.5 (look at the sticky thread at the top) Follow the 2.1 root guide to find the upgrade to 2.1

One click root, I believe, only applies to 2.1 (as log as you don't have the most recent update from Sprint and HTC) You will have to again upgrade to 2.1

Yes, you can wireless tether

Upgrading to 2.1 is painless, I'd recommend trying that first to see if the new functionality in 2.1 will make you happy. Personally, I rooted using the one click universal root, it again, was incredibly easy. Plus, there are lots of really cool people on this forum that will help you with questions, you will have questions along the way.

Can't help on the apple question.

Good luck!

thanks. can you send me a link showing me how to tether..i am looking to tether the ipad if possible.

also on 1.5 do you suggest auto or manual and are there different options for rooting?

Well, a lot of people have problems with the auto rooter. Doing it the manual way, you learn a little bit about some of the adb commands, which help in the future to mess with stuff even more. But whatever you choose, and works for you is the best method:)

And DonB posted a link, but I don't think it is for the wifi tether app. All you have to do is dload the app from the market after you're rooted, and you will be able to tether. (super easy)

actually, here is the link for the apk for wifi tether

wireless_tether_1_60_htc.apk - android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users 1.60 *** FOR HTC ONLY *** - Project Hosting on Google Code
