Accessories Cheap DIY "multimedia" dock

Found this at Walmart - thought it would work well as a dock for night time charging.
Quick addition of a magnet from an old harddrive and voila - instant media dock for 10$! (12$ on walmart.com )
open (with room for the charger to slip in on the bottom - had not thought about it till now but i could put the charger in the top too...)

Closed for travel - doubles as a headphone case!
(originially i had not moved the phone over enough to allow the charger to fit, and when it was in that location, the magnet opened the car dock, so i pryed it off and moved it over and now its perfect0!)

I'm curious though, is the are where you applied the magnet, the only area that will activate dock mode? Also, is there a particular type of magnet that will allow the phone to immediately force itself into dock mode?

Going to bump this, because I plan on stopping by my local WallyWorld this weekend and picking this up, along with the type of magnet(s) I made need. Any help would be appreciated.

I just came back from the one near my work, and they didn't have any, nor did the guy have a clue what it was. I even logged into this thread and clicked on the link to show him the picture...WalMart - Bleh!

Hmm, yeah, I never thought about how hit or miss this maybe. Either way, free shipping site-to-store isn't so bad.

I just used one from a hard drive I had laying around. Check Michaels - They have all kinds of magnets. It just needs to basically sit behind the speaker on the back - the magnet will stick to it, and when it does, itll jump to dock mode.

But make sure the magnet is the right polarity. One side of the magnet will trigger the Car mode, and the other side will trigger the Multimedia mode, which is the one you'd want for this stand.

ah ha! Is that how they do it! I thought it was 2 sensors, and 1 was car, one was multimedia, but i flipped over my magnet and confirmed your statement :O nifty!

Cool. Thanks for posting additional pic and vid. very convenient portable dock. Is there anything "grippy" on the bottom to prevent the dock from moving around? How stable is it while the phone is on the dock?
