Root Nonsensikal vs. Kaos

I used NonSensikal for quite a while and really loved it. I liked the blue theme, and I was able to make hands free calls through my bluetooth up until a few builds ago. After that point, I started looking for a ROM that allowed BT hands free to work. I saw something about it in Kaos Froyo v35, and it did pop up, but it only heard me when I spoke into the phone. So now that I know that it doesn't seem that any of the ROMs work with this feature, I may go back to Nonsensikal. My reasoning for being so picky is that I nearly flipped my car trying to make a phone call while driving down the road. Not even texting! Hands free is a must.

I have used both and prefer nonsensikal. I am actually flashing back to 7.0 because 7.5 the camera force closes. I had some issues with kaos, most the the alarm clock (something vital to me) would fail to go off several times a week. nonsensikal also seems faster and smoother in my opinion.

I was running Kaos for most of the last month (all but 5 days), but just flashed Nonsensikal 7.0 vanilla the other night. I prefer Nonsensikal at this point. For whatever reason, all along I was having issues with the market in Kaos - it would never notify me of new updates until I went into the market myself, plus add all of the issues that come and go with the camera and GPS. The other night I had a major lag issue that I have never had before with Kaos.

So far, with Nonsensikal, there have been no issues with the market and none with GPS, and everything runs perfectly fine. This is my new default.

I moved from the moto droid to the eris recently, so I'm spoiled as far as stable, fast roms are concerned. I'm new to the eris rom scene, so I don't know much, and I've only tried two (because I refuse to do anything but froyo). I OC'd to 806 MHz on the eris, and played with kaos. After playing with Kaos for a few days, I decided to try nonsensikal out of desperation for a theme. Nonsensikal is very very smooth, which is a plus. I haven't really stressed it much, but I'm having a good time with it. Overall, more smooth than kaos definitely.

I have been making hands free calls over bluetooth on Nonsensikal 7.0 Black using the Sync System in my car. It has been working great.

I have had very few issues after the first day or two. I have had market issues, but I have read of other people having the same issues so I do not believe that is related to the ROM.

Because some folks are reporting bugs with 7.5 of Nonsensikal and have dropped back to 7.0, I flashed the 7.0 version around mid afternoon yesterday. So far I'm pleased with it. If it stays as stable as it has been this will likely become my new standard ROM, replacing xtrROM. There are some minor changes from 2.1 to 2.2 that I really like, so I've been waiting for a nice stable 2.2 ROM. Kaos is close, but isn't quite there for me yet.

What are the actual differences between these roms? I just went to Kaos v35-1 a couple days ago. It's my first 2.2 ROM, and the new Gmail app alone is what will be keeping me from going back to 2.1. I also like some of the other little things I'm noticing, but no real deal-breakers other than that so far.

The biggest thing that made me go over to 2.2 was that my phone was getting ridiculously annoying, to the point where I wanted to throw it at a brick wall. It would randomly freeze and restart at least 1-2 times a day when I was trying to do stuff (sometimes during typing a text message, sometimes opening an app, it was just 100% random). Also when I was using the Navigator, it would *VERY OFTEN* say "GPS signal lost" and I'd have to turn GPS off, then on, and wait a minute, and it would find it again. Very annoying because it would always happen at the exact moment where I needed to know what was next.

Anyway, enough of that rant. The only real issue I've had with Kaos so far is the camera. First it froze... then after looking it up, I turned off auto-focus, and it worked fine, takes good pics. However, it did lock up once and then forced my phone to restart... did not like that. No problems since that though.

Another issue I have is not as major, but just somewhat annoying... the 3D Gallery app. I've absolutely LOVED this app since going to non-Sense 2.1 ROMs (White Widow, then CELB). It was by far the fastest-loading picture app, and I never understood why so many people complained about it. The 2D one was horrible for me. However, now that I'm on 2.2, this 3D Gallery app is quite slow to load up. Also it randomly jumps around to the left/right when I'm trying to scroll through the pictures/albums and I'm not sure why. It really sucks because of how much I loved it before :(

Any thoughts on those issues? Are they present in the other 2.2 ROMs as well? Other than those, I've had no problems with Kaos (although I haven't tried the GPS yet).

Thanks for any input!

Nonsensikal uses the 2D Gallery, and it's pretty fast to load. I have had no GPS issues; I have had no terrible lag; I have had no issues with the market; the camera works fine in 7.0 vanilla (I understand that 7.5 force closes on the camera.)

I do like the ability of the 3D Gallery to access Picasa albums, but I can live without it. As I have said before, I'm not a huge fan of the Eris camera anyway, so I don't use it very much.

I've also tried CELB and I liked that a lot as well, though I didn't like that there was no trackball notification. That is fixed in 2.9 apparently. Just be sure that you read the instructions carefully for CELB - you have to wipe and flash the ROM, then flash Google Apps from Recovery before you reboot the phone into CELB for the first time. I am pretty sure that CELB uses the 3D gallery.

I'm in the same boat with jusitnn.. I flashed KaosFroyo v35-1 a week or two ago, and had the same camera problem. Fixed it and it works great most of the time. I have had problems with the ringer. Sometimes when I go to change the ringer volume it will say "in-call volume" instead. When this happens my ringer won't work for calls/texts. Other than that the only complaint is the battery heating up every once in a while (nothing big though, all it takes is a reboot and that takes 1-2min. not bad at all)

has anyone else run into the problem of wanting to change ringer vol and getting the "in-call volume"? I'm also curious on the nonsensikal v7 and 7.5. anybody have a link to the specs/rom?

Here's a link to Nonsensikal.
[ROM][9/22] Nonsensikal v7.5 [Froyo|Black|Blue|Vanilla] - xda-developers
I've been on it for about 24 hours now, so far I'm liking it. I had a few force closes in the first hour or so of flashing the ROM, but I've about gotten to where I expect that on a new ROM. It seems like they take a while to get settled into the phone.

I've used Kaos a few times and have never seen the volume problem you mentioned. Not sure how you're doing it, but when I want to change the ringer volume I just press the up or down volume buttons while on the home screen.

Boy, that sounds a lot like the Silent Audio Bug. Can you still successfully make phone calls when this happens, or do you have to restart the phone?

I've tried both numerous times and CELB as well. With launcher Pro I can tell no difference in speed or smoothness. Quantum benchmarks scores all the same as well. I use Kaos mainly because I hate the picture gallery Nonsensikal chooses to use and the camera on the current version forces close (which would be fine but fxcamera which is my alternate does the same). I do like the pull down and other theme stuff with Nonsensikal but at this point I'm sticking with Kaos v35-1 and Metamorphing for themes. for whatever reason for me CELB just random reboots way too often on my phone. this never happens on my phone with Kaos or Nonsensikal. I havent ruled out either but until I see head and shoulders difference I'm sticking with Kaos. For the most part except minor details and versions where things get broken and fixed eris 2.2 ROMs are eris 2.2 ROMs

yeah that's how i change the ringer volume. i've only noticed it a couple of times, but it hasn't really bothered me enough to flash a new rom (yet?)

i've been able to make phone calls no problem. the only time i restart is when the battery gets hot. that happens maybe once every other day (or so)

I guess the question that I should have asked is after you notice this inability to change ringer volume with the volume rocker switches, can people hear you speak when you are on a phone call? It sounds as if that is not the case, but the symptom that you describe is one of the symptoms of silent audio.

So If I am coming over from KaosFroyo V35, what should the steps be to get Nonsensikal?

If I dont like it, how would I get back to KFV35? Can i transfer my stuff from KJ to Non? Like apps and stuff?

I'm pretty new to root as well, but it seems that since you are supposed to do a Nandroid backup before you do anything involving your ROM image, you will probably be able to just go into the Amon-RA recovery and under backup I believe there is an option to restore from one of the backups you made before. I have a backup of plain rooted 2.1 v3, one of KaosFroyo V35-1, and one of Nonsensikal, so if I screw anything up, I can just restore off of my backup (as long as I don't break my SD).

As far as transferring apps between ROM images, I don't think it would be too hard, especially for the ones you run off of your SD, since nothing happens to them when you wipe the phone or install a new ROM. You could always make a copy of your apps folders and plug them back in after your new ROM is flashed on, but I don't have any paid apps, so I don't know if there's any sort of check that would fail from simply dragging them onto the new ROM.

What shuvool said about Nandroid - do a Nandroid backup before you wipe and flash Nonsensikal and you can go back to KF just as your phone is set up now at any point going forward.

As for moving apps, probably the easiest is to get Titanium Backup from the market and back up your user apps and data (menu->batch and choose that option) while you are running KF, just before you flash, then, after installing Titanium in Nonsensikal and restore your user apps from there. Though one great thing about Froyo is that when you set up your Google account for the first time in Nonsensikal it *should* start installing all of your apps that it finds in the market in the background, without you having to do anything except wait for them to install.
