Help (UK) - Recent OTA Update? Problems..

Hi guys,

for people in Europe, Motorola recently issues an OTA update to fix a few issues with the 2.1Update build on devices.. I did the update several days ago and it seems that the stability of network connection (ie being able to make calls, send texts, data connection) has become dreadful!

I know that Android has never been the most stable of platforms, and at times, it does drop signal, or will not let you do some of the above for no real reason. But since the OTA, it seems to be so much worse, along with the device restarting 2-3 times a day..

Has anyone else had the OTA, or any of the problems?

I updated mine from my PC, but the end result should be the same as OTA.

Since the update I have seen no negative issues of any sort - in fact at first look I thought nothing had changed. But there are several noticeable and positive changes to some apps and services (music, Google Maps for example). Network performance (3 UK) seems unaffected as far as I can tell, and I'm in fringe 3G coverage at home.

Oh - and no restarts at all with my Milestone either before or after the update.

The bad network issue is probs down to the orange and tmobile merge

Orange has been screwing up loads the past few weeks on and off. I was getting message failures loads the other day and internet drops now and then

My milestone does reboot an awful lot

but i think the network issues and the OTA is just a coincadink

It's nothing to do with the Orange/Tmobile merge don't worry.. It's definitely not a network error.. No actual changes have been made to any of the network features on the merger yet ;)

Power-cycled several times on it's own yesterday although it did a few times when turning off Wi-fi.. will give it a few more tries and see where I get!

Actually, for me upgrade from 2.1 to 2.1-update1 was exactly the oposite you describe. With 2.1, i got reboots every day or other day, uptime of 50 hours was unreachable. After update to 2.1-update1, my uptime right now is over 192 hours - last time i had this high uptime was with 2.0.1.

Btw, some people had a experience that swaping a old SIM to a newer one solved their reboot problems, maybe you could try to swap for new SIM card. Pre 1998 SIM cards had 5V, later ones had 3.3V and 1.8V operating voltage, so if you have a older card it can be a voltage issue.

It won't be down to the network merger, but Orange has had a number of issues over the last six months or so. I am actually hoping the merger will fix them, not make them worse!

The latest problem I, and many other colleagues on Orange, are experiencing is a weird one (well, not necessarily that weird) whereby data stops working when you have just 3G, but works fine with HSPA. I can go to a number of areas on different days where I will simply get no data with 3G or 2G/GPRS/EDGE. Yet HSPA (added as a later upgrade) works fine.

The problem moves with my SIM card, and the Milestone works fine if I pop in a Vodafone, Three or T-Mobile SIM.

I've had an Orange employee explain some of the reasons behind the problems, but I can't post them here.

The HSPA network is 3G!

The HSPA network is 3G!

Of course it is, but HSPA enabled sites are clearly acting different. Other networks are 100% HSPA but Orange isn't. Orange also used different infrastructure on its 2G network, do they do so for 3G? This may explain problems limited to certain sites that are 3G only.

There's one area by New Southgate that has only got EDGE and isn't even 3G enabled after all these years!

Since i updated, my phone kept saying that it couldnt see the sd card even though the music was there and the picture background was there! then it just wouldnt start up even though it was fully charged. So have now sent to the Motorola repair centre to be checked out. Bummer! I hope they find something so that they can fix it and then i can have my doody phone all ok whilst waiting for 2.2 to arrrive.

I got this update last Wednesday. Seemed to go pretty smoothly (although nothing showed up on SD card until after a reboot. That made me panic for a moment!) until the following day when I realised I didn't have a 3G connection. I swapped to 2G, but still nothing.

I know Orange have been having some issues with 3G stuff recently, so I wasn't overly worried at first, assuming it was a network problem on their side. However, nearly a week later, and having been to quite a lot of different coverage areas, it is still not working.

I have spent a lot of time on hold to Orange, but never got as far as talking to a human there yet. However, I suspect that as this went down at the same time as the update* then it's not going to be anything on their side.

So, it is a Motorola phone. Android operating system. Bought through Carphone Warehouse. Contract with Orange. So who is it I need to raise this with? I have visions of whoever I talk to just blaming a different part of the supply chain.

Is there any way to roll back the update to see if that fixes the problem, or does anyone know how long I'll have to wait for 2.2 to be released?

* As I was connected to Wifi at home when I updated I wouldn't have noticed if it got a 3G/2G connection

Im with T-Mobile so cant blame orange for this one. Latest news from the repairers is that it needs a new 'component', but dont know what!!:thinking::thinking:

Hardware breaks sometimes. I doubt a failed component was caused by the firmware update, although anything is possible I suppose. Much more likely the hardware component concerned would have failed anyway, probably on the next reboot.

Well, im realy very p*ssed off now! Just spoke to the repair company, SBE Ltd, who say my phone needs new camera and flash, new antena, new case and an on-off switch!!!! What?! Parts on order, due in 5th october, then time to rebuild phone, so may be sent out by end of next week!!!!!!!! ARGH!!!! Rang Motorola to complain, but you only get the call centre in Asia who will refere to a supervisor but cant actually speak to one or get one to speak to you! Am now trying to find a contact at a Motorola office in the UK but proving very hard.

Well, the firmware update that you originally blamed for breaking your SD card surely can't have also broken the camera, flash, aerial, case (!), power switch ...

A component - or even several - can certainly fail for no obvious reason but the fault list you posted sounds like it was "updated" with a hammer.

Everything was working ok before it wouldnt turn back on- the phone was perfect as i have a protective case.I dont understand how all these other bits suddenly dont/wont work. How can they all fail at the same time? The sd card wasnt broken, the phone just wouldnt recognise it in the Gallery, even though the songs were there in the Music player. Am puzzled by it all, and of course no one at SBE could explain it. Have just sent a letter of complaint to Motorola UK.

I can understand your frustration if you're a careful owner (as I certainly am) and are unaware of any unfortunate accidents that may have occurred. My slightly facetious response was prompted by the same question as yours - especially since even the case was affected - making it more like traumatic damage than a simple hardware failure.

Perhaps the repairer damaged it during disassembly, or maybe it was dropped during shipping; you'll probably never know the truth. Whatever the true cause it's extremely unlikely (to the point of near certainty) that the list of faults as reported by the repairer are unrelated to the firmware update that is the topic of this thread.

Hope you get it back soon :)

My tale of 3G woe has had a happy ending. The problem was update related, but not as a direct cause of the update.

Both of the updates I have had have resulted in the unlock pattern being switched off. I didn't realise this time though until an hour or so after the phone had been in my pocket. It had turned itself on and had been pocket-typing doing all kinds of things. It was half way through an email to asqwrjfsdi to say jfasowir209 wiof skwiefhwi. A liberal use of the Back button showed it had been playing some of my games and using other apps. But it hadn't done any damage, and I reactivated the unlock pattern.

It wasn't until the following day that I realised the 3G wasn't working. Finally I managed to get through to Orange, and after some time on the phone to the support staff, it seems the APN settings were corrupt. It turns out that the access point type should be "default". In fact, mine said "defaweafw8asdfjioult", which looks to me like a classic case of pocket-typing.

After resetting the APNs back to default everything works fine again.

I know the update caused the sd card problem, esp as others have had the same issue. The rest is a big mystery. As an example of how to do it right, my Ricoh camera broke the other week. Ricoh emailed me same day i reported it an UPS label, they came next morning and the camera went to and from Germany in 3 days, back fully repaired and serviced, at no cost even though it was 2 1/2 years old. Bless them, damm Motorola!
