My team has a patent pending on an interesting communication invention. We are funded to develop a hardware add-on for landline telephony and certain other communication systems.

However, in a forehead-slapping moment we recognized that the invention can be executed in software, making it applicable to cell phones including the iPhone and Android.

Though we have a good engineering history, we have no experience in this specific arena.

Where should we look? Who should we talk with?

Sounds pretty cool... I would start with the Android Development and Hacking forum (Android Development and Hacking - xda-developers) over at XDA.

There's a bunch of subforums that you should take a look at:

Android Software and Hacking General - xda-developers
Android Software Development - xda-developers
Android Apps and Games - xda-developers

You've also got similar forums over here in AF:

http://androidforums.com/application-development/
Android Applications - Android Forums
Application Requests - Android Forums
Application Announcements - Android Forums

Plus lots of others! I'm certain there are similar forums in many of the other Android-related websites, these are just the ones I am familiar with. I'm also certain you'll have no shortage of folks willing and able to help you guys (I wish my Android development kung-fu was up-to-par :p).

Good luck...keep us posted about how things are going and turn out. Cheers!

I have not been able to try it myself but another option might be to check out the new Google App Inventor:

About - App Inventor for Android

I don't know how limited, or not, this tool is but you might be able to use it to at least do some protyping. Note that at one point access to App Inventor was by invitaton only. Not sure if it's been opened up to everyone now or not...

Well, App Inventor will, at least at this point in time, only get you so far. You might be able to prototype with it, but you don't get to see any true Java code generated as a result of it. I think, at this point, the App Inventor setup uses meta information to describe your project and prototype it on your phone. Then, when you want to actually get an actual .apk of your project, its generated at Google and sent back to you for saving (i.e., they do the true Java generation on the back-end, presumably so you don't have to install the JDK/JRE, Eclipse, etc. so that the burden on someone using it (and their PC) is substantially lower).

By the way, here's an example of my one (and only--at this point in time) app I developed:

xda-developers - View Single Post - [Begging] Devs - please publish your MD5's

I'm working on making it look a little more professional (progress bars, etc.). Its a great learning experience and I've learned a lot, but I've got a long ways to go.

Cheers!
