Root Unable to Install New Google Car Home App

If you ever get an "installation failed" notification for a Google application, it's an easy fix but you might need to be rooted to solve it.

The reason is that these core system applications used to only be updated whenever Verizon got around to rolling out a system update. Lately Google has been making more and more of these core apps available in the Market - which is great. Now they can update them whenever they want and they don't have to package them with system updates. However your phone is confused... it thinks these system apps shouldn't be in the market so it rejects the updates.

So on to the solution - in the future remember this, as this works for any Google app that won't update properly (Voice Search, Google Search, Street View, etc) the difference is only the file name. You might even want to check the apps I listed above and make sure you have the latest versions, then use this method to update them if you get the "installation failed" notice.

Procedure:
1. Using Root Explorer (or equivalent), go into /system/app and delete CarHomeGoogle.apk. Make sure you tap the "Mount r/w" button at the top or it will tell you the file is read only. DO NOT DELETE CarHomeLauncher.apk !

2. Reboot your phone.

3. Open market, install Car Home. Now you should get a "Car Home installed successfully" notification. Yes!

Don't delete ALL files related to Car Home... the ONLY one to delete is CarHomeGoogle.apk. If you delete the CarHomeLauncher.apk, Car Home won't launch when you use the car dock.

Actually the first time I tried it the same thing happened, it reappeared. The second time I tried it, it worked. Root Explorer does that to me sometimes and I don't know why. Keep trying and don't delete more files than you need to.

Thank you for the help publicanimal!!

iamloco724, did you make sure to reboot after deleting and prior to trying to re-downloading and installing Car Home? Initially, this fix didn't work for me, but I believe it is because I failed to reboot prior to re-downloading and attempting install. After I rebooted it worked fine for me.

Good luck!!

No, I just managed to update with just the free version of Titanium Backup. It's true that Titanium will show two icons for Car Home without more info, but as you hit the uninstall button it shows exactly the name of the given .apk in full before you confirm the uninstall. I've seen both the Car Home .apk and the Car Home Launcher .apk, uninstalled the one you pointed out earlier and installed the app from the Market after reboot. Works like a charm.

Ok, for anyone who deleted it all like I did  Then installed the update/app from the market... Here is the launcher that you will need to reinstall after you've noticed you installed it but can't open (open button is grayed out in the Market, doesn't show up in app drawer).
Just use Astro to install.

I only deleted the carhomegoogle.apk and then had no problem downloading and installing the update from the market. I thought I was home free but when I launch it the screen is blank! And then my live wallpaper goes away. I am running CyanogenMod-6.0.0-RC3. Any suggestions to get this working?

I did not have this problem so I don't think it's an issue with anything you did. If you have any backups of a different ROM or feel like installing a different one from scratch, maybe try it on a different ROM and see if you still have a problem.

Also, check that you do indeed still have the CarHomeLauncher.apk in /system/app? If not then you can download it above.

Good luck.
