Due to a strange glitch, I'm getting a warranty replacement!

I can't remember if I asked about this here, but I've had a weird experience w/ my Vibrant. Occasionally I'll be texting someone, & then suddenly it won't be their name @ the top of the thread. It'll show another contact. When I type another text into the thread, it'll go to the contact that shows @ the top, not the contact I had been texting with. It's pretty embarrassing when my friends get random texts from me!

I chatted customer support & they couldn't figure it out, so they had me do a factory reset. That didn't help. Today I was out & about & decided to stop in my local T-Mo store. I explained my problem & they hooked me up w/ a new sim card. She said many customers were experiencing issues w/ their various phones because of the tower upgrades. I thanked & was about to go on my way...but when I got to my car I got the "welcome to t-mobile..." text...& it showed that it came from my friend Kat! I went back inside & showed the rep who I had been speaking with what happened. She immediately got me on the phone w/ someone who got an exchange set up for me.

I'm kinda bittersweet about this. I'm not enthused @ the idea of getting a refurbished phone because I've babied mine like crazy. Plus a refurb had something wrong w/ it, to begin with. But...I can't help but wonder what the GPS will be like on the "new" device. I'm guessing that I'll prolly get a unit that someone returned w/in the 14 day period because the GPS wasn't working...but you never know. It'll be interesting to see what happens when I get it.

This thread really has no point...just rambling :). I've had way too much coffee today.

That is a bizarre issue and one I haven't heard of.

Don't worry, it won't help anyway... Wait and see if you even get a refurb. I've read of several people who ended up getting a brand new phone under warranty replacement - not a refurb. Plus if you do get a refurb with a different issue you can then request another replacement and insist on a new one given your previous experience.

Well, I guess that gives me some hope! I've only had to do a warranty exchange on one other device & that was a Sidekick LX 2009. The unit I got had spotty MMS capabilities. When I got my exhange, I'm pretty sure it was brand new. The build was better & the keys were a LOT easier to type on.

How can you tell if you get a new or refurbished device?

I think luck was on your side that they when the t-mo welcome text came in as kat! you might actually end up with a new phone if there aren't many refurbs in circulation yet.

now on your problem at hand, I haven't had the contact name change on me on my phone, but in the last month strange things have definitely happened with texts between me and other t-mo customers going to the wrong person. I'm getting texts from friends not intended for me, same with my sister, she is getting texts from her t-mo friends but the text wasn't intended for her.

Here is the funniest thing, yesterday I get a text from a shirtless guy laying down in his bed. I'm like what the hell? I showed my sister and she started laughing, it's one of her friends. I'm not even in the guys phone-book, he meant to send it to my sister but somehow it came to my phone number. I have no clue what is happening, but there is something up with their network. They need to fix that shit real quick. Here is another thing pissing me off, I send a text, and people are getting it hours, even days later.

Anyway, hope you enjoy your new phone, let us know how the GPS works on it, chances are it will be the same.

Ok this is interesting - as now I am wondering if it's a (rare GS issue?), as this happened to me a couple of times on the Epic last month. Odd, very odd.

Yikes!!! See, this sounds like the friends of mine that end up getting the texts meant for someone else! Like, last weekend my friend Kellie & I were texting back & forth...but a text that said "me too!" ended up going to my old boss, Brenda! Brenda wrote back "me too what? did i butt text you in my sleep??" It was kind of funny. I don't think it's just for T-Mo users in my addy book, though. I know that Brenda is on Verizon & Kat is on AT&T!

ETA: I'm really not holding my breath for perfect GPS on my "new" device. But, SammyV you were right when you said that luck was on my side w/ the T-Mo welcome text coming in when it did. That problem only happens like once one text per week, out of the dozens of texts I send every week! So...maybe luck will continue to be on my side :).

I'm not sure a new device is going to fix your problem. My phone does the same thing. When I back out of the text and I open messaging it fixes itself and shows the actual sender. However I do have a different problem happening now, it's kind of annoying.

So my friend gives me her number, I add it to my contacts but I input the area code wrong, I save it not knowing I made a mistake. I text her and I get no reply, so I look at the number again and realize I made a mistake. Instead of deleting the contact and replacing it (which might of been the best choice in hindsight) I update the existing contact with the new number. Sometimes when she text me it says the sender is Val (her name) but from the wrong number, so if I reply, she never gets it. I checked my contacts, there is only one contact named Val and it's the right number. It's incredibly annoying.

Weird!! And actually my problem is a little bit different than the first one you mentioned. I know what you're talking about, though, like sometimes you'll get a text, & in the notification drawer it'll say it's from one person, but it's actually from another. Then when you go into the text app, it's fixed. With my problem, it doesn't fix itself. If I am texting w/ Kellie & suddenly Brenda starts receiving my messages, from that point on Brenda will keep receiving my messages even though it looks like I'm still texting in Kellie's & my text thread.

Huh? What do you mean. You mean a new shipment batch of Vibrants? Is the hardware supposedly changing?

I dont think it's uncommon for manufacturers to tweak the hardware on subsequent batches of phones. Last time I had to do a warranty replacement, the hardware was noticeably better on the one I got for the exchange. Last year when I got the BB 9700, many people were complaining about squeaky bezels and wobbly trackpads. Apparently those issues were fixed on newer units. I'm not quite sure what they'd change on the Vibrant, though.

This exact thing happened to me. I can't remember if I just did a soft reset or if I did a hard reset to fix it. Luckily whatever I did worked!

ya but if samsung had made any hardware revisions we would all know about it, they put the hardware revision in the phones software, you can use the secret codes thread in tips and tricks section to find it.
