Help What makes a touchscreen touch?

I have an old Galaxy i7500 that I broke the unlock button while taking it apart. I replaced the DPAD with a part I purchased off of ebay and now I can unlock the phone. But the touchscreen does not work or more accurately it does not work 98% of the time. Occasionally it will start to work for 10 seconds at a time and when it works it works well but it soon becomes unresponsive and I can only use the DPAD to navigate.

I do not see any electrical connections to the glass screen so I'm curious how does the glass screen get the charge that it needs to operate? How do glass touchscreens get the charge they need to detect my touch?
