Is this video quality considered normal?

My T-Mobile Desire received the 2.2 update a couple of weeks ago and on Saturday I thought I'd try some 720p recording.

Unfortunately the result is really disappointing; stuttering/jerky recording, poor image quality, poor sound quality etc

Can you take a quick look and tell me if I've done something wrong (wrong setting perhaps?) or if this is as good as it gets on the Desire?

That video is very respectable considering what you're actually using is a phone. You can't expect a phone to produce a flawless video - They aren't physically big enough. They have tiny image sensors and tiny optics. There's a reason high quality photo and video cameras are big and expensive - They need to be!

The Desire does a hell of a lot of things very well. But I'm afraid it uses a sensor, not a wizard, to capture your video. :p

Actually, this is a known issue on stock roms. I just recorded a 1080p movie playing on my television and it was jerk free. However, the movie on my pc itself isn't great quality. It flashes up a frame of oddness every few seconds.

1080p?
anyway its the iso setting, someone on xda forums found it was affecting video as its linked so changing it works

to stop the laggey flicker that happens is a simple fix as its to do with the camera iso setting.

before recording a video go into the camera in picture mode, go into settings and change the iso to 800 instead of automatic.
close camera and open it again and record video, it will work nice and clear and lag free

Just tried that and it definitely makes a noticeable improvement.

Fair comments but...

A, I never expected and/or asked for flawless video. I merely asked if my video represented normal quality for a Desire or not. As it turned out changing a setting improved the quality no end.

B, I can think of several phones that lack wizardry, instead using sensors, that produce better results but that's a debate for another day now as my original question has successfully been answered by others.

This was always changing my photos quality to worse though.
And the video is the same... no change.

it does make photo quality worse but you can change it back

it does work for video its proven by many people on xda forums. as long as you are filming in a well lit area

if not and you have a light spot instead then the video will stutter as the camera tries to whitebalance

Pfffft.

The Desire produces significantly poorer video footage than my N86 8MP.

It's no good claiming 720p video if it doesn't look any good.

Anyone here seen video capture on the iPhone4? It is unbelievably good. Makes me want to cry.
did you watch the iphone video recording on a pc/mac?

theres not much in it.

we did a test at work last week with my colleagues iphone4 and my desire (after i tweeked the video as explained above) and there was not much in it at all
only difference is that the desire keeps auto adjusting whitebalance heavily where as in video mode the iphone4 was more subtle so it looked a little more stable.

in good lighting conditions this shouldn't be a factor.

when watching them on the phone howeve3r the iphone4 looks better but then it has a better screen and displays a larger res

some examples i found on the net
