i have a droid eris with the 2.1v3 leak but i rooted it so i got recovery on it but i cant install the 2.2 rom. ive tried ROMmanager but it says i need root on my phone but i do. im tryin to put clockwork recovery so i could use rom manager to install it since my track ball dont work for me to do it manully but idk how to:thinking: i need help cuz the froyo looks way better than wat im on so any ideas????

Is your phone rooted? You might need busybox installed (from the market) too before ROM manager will work.

Also, if your phone has actual volume buttons (I don't know, I've never seen an Eris), they can be used to navigate the actual recovery menu if the trackball doesn't work.

Most of the experienced users on this board do not use ROM Manager/ClockworkMod recovery.

That's not saying that the above is necessarily wrong; although I will say that most of the documented brickings of an Eris seem to have involved users who had Clockwork on their phone.

( We see this most often if people get their rooting instructions from one of those "helpful, but jack-of-all-trades phone rooting sites", rather than starting in an Eris-specific forum. Then they screw up their phones royally, find out that there are no Eris experts at the first site that gave them the instructions, and end up over here complaining about methods that no-one here uses. )

You might want to tell us is which one-click rooter you used. There have been several introduced recently that were ported from other rooting kits on other phones (by folks who don't even own an Eris, frankly.)

If you used Jcase's "one click" for the Eris, then the custom recovery which was installed is Amon_RA.

You can find out whether or not you have that installed by powering the phone completely off, and restarting it in one of two ways:

- Press and Hold down both "Vol-Up" and "End/Power"; press the Vol-Up key first and the End/Power second, and continue holding both until the screen lights up. In 8-10 seconds, a menu in green text will show up.

- If the above didn't work, press and hold down both "Vol-down" and "End/Power"; press the Vol-down key first and the End/Power second, and continue holding both until the screen lights up (almost instantly in this case). Look at the menu, and follow the instructions to start "Recovery".

Have a look at the pictures in this post; that will give you a really good idea what Amon_RA's recovery for the Eris looks like, and how to operate it, too.

Give my tutorial a shot Run Android 2.2 (Froyo) on Your Droid Eris (How-To) | JonSuh.com. With the kind of instructions, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand the step-by-step.

The thing is you probably aren't rooted yet. Running just the one click method alone only gives you a custom recovery. Usually Amons_RA. You then need to flash either rootme.zip (included in the one-click method) or engtools3.zip to actually have root and you probably skipped this step.

If you do have a custom recovery you access it by first turning off the phone then push the volume down + power button at the same time. You then should be in hboot and pressing volume + will get you into recovery where you can flash one of the rooting tools I mentioned (rootme.zip or engtools3.zip).

The link below is the simpliest way to root your phone give it a try. Its a two step method even though it says one-click so read all the directions.

ROM Manager doesn't need busybox but you do have to flash Clockwork Mod Recovery over Amons_RA. When you try and use ROM Manager it tells you to do this and I believe walks you thru it. However I would get used to Amons first then if you feel brave use ROM Manager. I used it for 6 months without any problems but have switched back to Amons and don't really miss ROM Manager.

you have two options in my opinion.

1. return your phone to verizon and get one that works.

2. flash clockwork mod recovery. you'll need a barcode scanner to get it off the website i linked to below. you still need the trackball to enter a selection but can use the volume +- keys to move thru selections.

Official Homepage for the ClockworkMod Recovery.

a couple of people (3 that i know of) have reported clockwork mod recovery bricking their phones. two used an older version (from may of this year) and one flashed a hero rom which more than likely caused his problem not clockwork.

thanks every1 for ur help but the thing is my trackball wont scroll down(or left) it moves up n right but cant get it to go down. i cleaned it n it still no go wat should i do?

I mentioned this above but,

Someone mentioned here you have volume + - keys on the eris. They should work as up and down buttons if all of amon ra's work is the same. You can use the phone call button and the back button to select and go back.

Not true. One of the customizations that Amon_RA performs for each phone is mapping keysyms to the desired actions.

For the Eris:

Scroll-Up = scroll-up
Scroll-Down = scroll-down
Vol-Down = back
Press = Select

Vol-Up = nothing
Send = nothing
End = nothing
Scroll-Left = nothing
Scroll-Right = nothing

Just tried it right now to confirm.

I'm not sure if this will work but you could try renaming it update.zip and try and get it to install like one of the leak versions. I remember some how getting leak v3 on my phone from the sdcard. Anyone else remember how it was done?

Also have you tried flashing clockwork mod recovery from rom manager?

rom manager wont flash the clockwork recovery it says "error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands" n it says i need root for it to work correctly

I forgot that it requires superuser to work. which is in the rootme.zip or engtools3.zip files that you can't install.

Your best bet is to get a new phone form Verizon or figure out how to use android-sdk and use adb to flash the clockwork recovery image to the phone.

If you have fastboot, which in all probablity you don't, requires hboot s-off, then it would be simple.

This is taken and modified from a post on Droidforums not my work:

1. download flash_image Here and place it in your tools folder

2. Connect your phone to your computer as charge only and open the terminal and run the following commands.

adb shell [hit enter]
su [hit enter]
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system [hit enter]

3. In a new terminal window (don't close the original one).

adb push flash_image /system/bin [hit enter]
exit [hit enter]

4. Now in the original terminal window

chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image [hit enter]

5. Now exit all terminal windows and disconnect and reboot your phone.

6. Download recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-desirec.img from here
Index of /recoveries

Its located about half-way down the page and make sure to grab the one one marked .img at the end

7. Mount your phones sd card and drop recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-desirec.img on to it and then disconnect your phone from the computer.

8. Reconnect the phone to the computer as charge only and open the Terminal and enter the following commands with the phone connected to your computer.

adb shell [hit enter]
su [hit enter]
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-desirec.img

9. To get into recovery turn off you phone and hold the Volume Up + Power until it boots into recovery.

Hopefully this works and I am not responsible for anything that happens if it doesn't.

MMAndroid,

I think varkie forgot that you still aren't really rooted (since you can't / haven't flashed rootme.zip or engtools3.zip), so the su command won't (yet) work.

If you want and are very industrious, you can check-out this thread: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/163423-flashing-rom-trackball-not-working.html

In it, erisuser1 illustrates how to manually do a Nandroid backup, wipes, and flashing a .zip (like the rootme.zip or a custom ROM) without using the trackball at all. I believe that this method should actually work for you, but the first thing you'd need to do is flash the rootme.zip file that comes with jcase's 1-click root method. If you read carefully between the lines, you should be able to glean from this thread how to flash (i.e., using the "/sbin/recovery --update_package=rootme.zip" command to get yourself rooted so that you can use the instructions that varkie posted above. You might have to reboot after doing this to actually "be" rooted.

Read carefully through the above thread and see if it makes sense.

Cheers!

yeah didn't realize this wouldn't work without superuser on the phone. their is a way to install the superuser.apk from adb i'm just not sure where the file needs to be or how it actually works.

the command is: adb install superuser.apk this is how i orignally installed it using the race method to root my phone back in june. i think the superuser.apk file was located on my sdcard after rooting with this method. Couldn't hurt to try just find the superuser.apk file and put it on you sdcard and see if it installs by running the command.

Just in case anyones interested this is a link to the race method of rooting for leakers:

Well, the SuperUser.apk only gives you the whitelist app (i.e., helping you manage which apps to approve or deny root access to)--you would still need to get the su program installed to truly get root (this is what flashing the rootme.zip or engtools3.zip does is install both su and the SuperUser.apk).

So, he'll still have to flash the rootme.zip file first...
