Thinking of switching to a Desire

So, I got an iPhone 4 a month ago. I'm over my honeymoon period and I want to get an Android. I had a nexus one earlier and now I feel stupid returning it. Sadly as Google no longer sells the Rogers/AT&T version, I am looking into the Desire.

Knowing that the HD is coming in a few months (I'm in canada) I was a little iffy about getting a Desire just yet. The thing I don't like about the Desire HD is the screen size. I feel 4.3 is too big, 3.7 to me seems perfect.

Would you suggest that I get the Desire? Will I be missing out on too much. As far as I can tell there are no HUGE performance differences in the HD. Is that true.

Any insight would be appreciated! Thank you!

That is exactly the reason I am looking into the Desire.

As a Desire user yourself, do you feel missing out on anything?

I bought a Telus Desire from Bestbuy (no $40 set up fee), unlocked it and use it with Fido. There's some initial setup you need to do to get 3g working but it's easy and everything works well.

The Desire is hands down the best phone I've had. Something that I might be missing from iPhone4 is Mac to phone sync/connectivity. Mac + iPhone are a match made in heaven. My sister was planning on getting an iphone 4 when her contract expired.. but she decided to go with Android after playing with my Desire and bought herself a Bell Vibrant.

No phone is perfect. But I'm very satisfied with the Desire.

I recently switched over from Rogers specifically to get the HTC Desire on Telus. I came over from a Samsung Slider phone but I've done all my research to compare the various options between different Android phones and the iPhone 4 and I have not looked back since. It was a toss up between this or the Samsung Galaxy S and since I hate Bell, it was an easy choice for me.

I love the size, its perfect as you mentioned. 3.7" is just right for me since 4.3" would be too big for my taste and would have some issues lugging it around in my pocket. It suits all my needs for browsing, occasional gaming, friendstream, email and other stuff.

Love the customizations and smoothness of HTC Sense vs other phones. The only other phone that I think could compete (among android) in terms of benchmarking was the Galaxy S.

Hope that helps, but long live HTC Desire! I'm anxiously awaiting 2.2 this month

There's no guarantee the HD is coming to Canada until it's confirmed, and I too feel that a 4.3" screen would be too big. I'm not interested in a tablet device and need a device of practical size for phone calls.

I had an iPhone 3G and thought it was great...until I got the Desire which is SO MUCH better for me. I considered an iPhone 4 but after reading about its problems, I looked at Android devices again and went with an HTC Legend for my wife and Desire for myself. Since updating to Froyo 2.2, I have not been disappointed in the Desire at all - it's fast, stable, and works well. I'm a happy camper.

A week ago, I was facing a similar dilemma - Galaxy S or the Desire.

Thanks to the folks out here, I made a wise choice.

Do go for the Desire. You will not regret it. I do not reside in Canada, and I have no idea about the HD.

There is still a lot to figure out on the Desire and I'm sure you will not regret buying one.

Oh... 4" was one of the reasons I snubbed the Galaxy S. Not to mention its rather cheap build (iPhone looks notwithstanding).

Thank you so much for all your advise. I think I am going to shift. The telus store and employees were less than helpful when I told them that I wante to buy the phone outright. I found someone selling a N1 for 400. If I don't find a desire I'll get the N1. Either way, I'm back to Android!

Good news.

There is a lot of buzz about the HD, but there will always be a newer phone just around the corner. Especially with HTC.

The desire haas proved very popular so I expect the developer community will support it and be creating new roms and porting roms for longer than HTC will be supporting it.

I'm not even interested in reading about the HD, I am that happy with the desire

Desire HD isn't likely to come to Canada but the Desire Z is (the cases are already listed on Best Buy Canada) and Bell will be getting it, meaning you'll have to unlock it to use on Rogers. Also Mobilicity are getting Nexus Ones very shortly (end of Oct?) for $550, that's a steal compared to most others selling the N1 which are usually upwards of $700, check that N1's IMEI to be sure it is clean, $400 is a tad low for a fairly rare phone.

And danfrance, they released the kernel source today, really happy with how HTC supports the dev community.

I agree with you about 3.7" screen - just seems a little too big.

Having just recently bought my desire, I was pretty annoyed when the new ones came out. Having said that, I did some research and there is little difference. Ill list them below. Some are important, others not so much. Anyway for many users the differences will be minimal, others huge. It's all relative and down to the individual.

Desire Z

- Keyboard
- Internal memory of 1gb + which is very beneficial for apps, no need to faff about with sd card crap.
- New HTC Sense

Desire HD

- 8 megapixel camera
- New HTC sense
- Internal memory of 1.5gb+ (I think? - its over 1gb anyway)


For me, the camera and keyboard are irrelevant.

However, the new HTC sense looks cool. It brings features like apples mobile me, and all sorts of new stuff. Having said that, potentially this could come to the current original desire but no word as of yet. If your content with 2.2 as it is this is irrelevant. I love it as it is on my desire, but for me its more just about having the latest thing.

Finally, the internal memory for me is a huge bonus. Because I like lots of apps (who doesn't?) I had to do my sd app process (see my signature) to mine and even still its limited as apps still add a footprint to internal memory. This is more or less my only draw back on this phone. It's infuriating as it's perfect otherwise. So this alone would be enough for me to upgrade, but I don't exactly have the cash. If the desire z is cheap ill consider.

So really, its all down to personal preference. Either way, if your on a budget you might want to wait as the original desire will drop in price when new ones come out i'm sure. Anyway, you may love the above features, or you may hate them. For me, an upgrade isn't justified by the price, but then you are buying outright so I don't know.

I've had my desire for a couple of months now and I STILL can't put it down. I *love* this phone. Personally I like the screen size as is...perfect in my pocket and in the hand...I have no interest in a larger screen. The Desire Z holds no appeal for me as I hate physical keyboards. I like the idea of the new sense, but I really think it will come to the Desire and I don't feel it will be too long before it does.

All in all, I am super happy with my desire. It's snappy, smooth and I don't care what any of the haters say...the Sense UI is unparalleled. That alone was my primary reason for selecting the Desire over the N1.

There will of course always be a "next best thing" around the corner, so I think you just have to go with a device that seems to be a good fit now, and commit to it for a couple of years. By the time you're ready to upgrade you can look forward to something altogether better being available.

I have had the Desire since May, and like you said, I cant put it down, I am constantly fiddling with it, customising this, modifying that, changing the homescreens, icons, folders, widgets etc. and learning new things that I can do with it. It seems that every time I have reached the point where I think I have discovered just about everything the phone has to offer, that someone posts a new trick or a new app comes out that changes my mind. I love this phone.

I'm getting my first Android, and I'm torn between the Desire and Nexus 1. I would have gotten the Desire Z, but I think I'll wait until the prices come down a bit. Why did you choose the Desire in the first place? What other phones did you consider?

For me, I narrowed down my choice to the Desire, galaxy s and n1. I wanted something without a physical keyboard, so that made the search easier. Ultimately I picked the Desire for 3 main reasons

1) sense ui
2) physical feel of device in hand/size
3) carrier

For me, the galaxy s felt cheap...build seemed flimsy and it felt plasticy. N1 was a strong contender, but sense ui on the Desire made it the clear winner.

I love nearly everything about the phone. If I could change anything it would be on board storage capacity, but to a large extent that issue has been improved by 2.2. Is it the most visually attractive android phone. No. But it ain't a beauty contest. Pound for pound and dollar for dollar, the Desire delivered the most for me. I have not once regretted the decision.
