Help should I have insurrance on my new X?

So my 30 days are fast approaching, and I was wondering what people thought about carrying the insurrance offered through verizon on their account?

I had the 7.99 insurrance on my EnVTouch, and never used it once. Seems like a huge waste to me, but then again, that wasn't a smartphone.

So who has this insurrance, and who doesn't? What is the rationale behind either being for, or against it?

THANKS!

Drop it break the screen. Moister damage (which is easier than you may think). Toilet dunk.
$100 vs $500. Seems like pretty basic math to me.
I've had lots of phones and the insurance usually laid for itself in the long run. You'll never miss the $7.99.

Not really, depending on how long you keep it and if you take care of it.....sure accidents can happen...you have to evaluate the odds in your own case. $8 = $100/year in two years your committment is up and you can spend the $200 on the latest and greatest Droid X-15. :)

BTW I think today was the end of my 30 days so ...

First of all, don't pay for TEC unless you plan on keeping the device for 2 full years. It takes a full year of paying that extra $1.99 a month before it even kicks in.

2nd ,get just the Asurion coverage for $6 a month for the first 6 months minimum. If you haven't used it by then and don't think you'll need it anymore then drop the coverage. $36 for 6 months of peace of mind is sooooooo worth it. Trust me ;)

I have posted on the matter many times. I'll see if I can find a more detailed post of mine...

Insurance is the old numbers game. If it were not profitable for companies to insure phones (i.e. if the logic "would you rather spend $100 or $500?" really worked), they wouldn't do it.

As with virtually any insurance, the question is: if it breaks, can you either afford to replace it, or afford to live without it? If the answer is yes, you're usually better going without insurance.

That is, unless you're clumsy. If you have a history of destroying phones, by all means, get the insurance. My coworker broke 3 phones in 2 years. He has insurance on his X.

I don't insure my phones. I also don't get extended coverage on my laptops, televisions, or other consumer goods. If I do something stupid, I replace it myself.

People just never seem to grasp the purpose of insurance. All insurance is designed to cover the "unexpected". To say "well I have never used it" is incorrect. You use it every minute of every day. It is protection against the unexpected. Who in the world really wants to use their life insurance!
Insurance would not exist if everyone collected on it. I have had it for more years than I can remember and never used it until about 2 years ago when my Treo went caput! Walked in to Verizon they helped me contact the ins carrier and the next afternoon I had the new Treo.

You make a very good point and I thank you for your post. It is true we use it every minute of every day and there is definitely value in that. Peace of mind can be a beautiful thing :)

True, but it is a game of odds that takes into account global statistics and may or may not apply to individual situations.

The thing that makes me crazy is when the insurance company forgets what it is supposed to be doing and argues every little detail and contests every payment or claim. (in particular in health care!!).

It's a question of value for your dollar, though.

The reason major insurance (like life insurance) exists and is ubiquitous is because nobody can afford the alternative. I could stop carrying health insurance and save my premiums, which would work for a lot of healthcare visits like physicals or short term prescriptions or something.

The worst case, though, is so completely far outside of what I can afford, that it needs to be prepared for.

In this case, the worst case scenario is a $500 phone. That's it. That's all that can happen. If you've carried insurance for a lot of years, you have likely paid for that worst-case scenario, and possibly several times over.

It's well worth it if, at any given time, you either can't afford or shouldn't lay out that $500 - or if it's highly likely that you will collect on it. Frankly, it's worth it if you just don't want to have to think about it. The point is just that the "worst case" is a fixed cost that is well within a lot of peoples' ability to spend. Many of those people would have been better off putting their premiums in a bank account.

It's all a personal decision because there are variables to account for that only the individual knows.

I don't carry insurance on my phone. But we also have 5 phones on our plan and it seems that one is up almost every few months and with mine be the primary on the account I can upgrade once a year. I also have all our phones so if something happens we will go back to one of those until we have an upgrade. My son broke his phone once and use an older one for about two months then he had his upgrade and got a new one. He was told if he broke another one he would get my wifes, old old Pink Razor phone.

Yes it would suck for me to have to go back to my TP2 if something happened to my X, but we have an upgrade coming in December if it is needed.

interesting food for thought. I have never broken a phone, and Ive had a mobile now for about 9 years. But, Ive never had an expenisve phone like this, so that is what I was wondering about.

How many people insure their smartphones. haha.

I did have that TEC warrenty before, I might look into that Asurian one. Where do you get that, through verizon? Same coverage as TEC?

Do all primary lines get upgraded once a year? I just have myself and one other person on my plan...

I guess it really depends on the individual and how clumsy you are! Speaking for myself, I've always had a good solid grip on things. Well I'm now a stones throw from my 50th birthday and I'm finding my solid grip isn't what it used to be. :( So far I've dropped my DX two or three times since I got it. Thankfully each time tends to be a drop of a short distance or a drop onto a relatively soft object (though I think my dog would prefer me NOT dropping the DX on him again!).

As for my fiance, well she's had a Droid 1 since it first came out. I put that phone on insurance since I know her... and, as expected, we've already had to replace her phone twice.
