Root Got a new Droid X, want to install 2.2 but want to do this the 'right' way

I got a new Droid X yesterday and I really want to get 2.2 on there, but after reading about the issues with the OTA version of 2.2, I'm hesitant to proceed unless I know exactly what path I'm going to take.

From my (admittedly limited) understanding, the OTA 2.2 changes the bootloader keys and thus 'locks' you in to that version of 2.2, correct? I know this screws over anyone wanting to go back to 2.1, but does this cause any hindrance for people doing anything other than trying to use the 2.1 sbf to go back to 2.1?

I ask this because I really don't want to cause any irreversible changes to my phone and close any of the few doors we X users have when it comes to modding our phones. Basically, I want to get 2.2 but do it in such a way that allows me the most freedom within the limitations the Droid X has. I don't want to download the OTA 2.2 only to find that I've severely limited my options. I don't care if I won't be able to go back to 2.1, but I do want to be able to install Tranquility, Obsidian, ZapX, FlyX, or any of those other custom roms that I've heard about.

What is the best path I should take here? Currently my phone says the following:
System Version
Version.1.13.604.MB810.Verizon.en.US

Firmware
2.1-update1

Baseband Version
BP_C_01.09.04P

Kernel Version
2.6.29
w30471@il93lnxdroid08 #1

Build Number
VZW

ERI Verion
5

PRL Version
52031

(thought I'd hide this to keep the post tidy...I know some of this info is overkill but I hate to leave out info when asking for help)

If the OTA 2.2 isn't the best route, what version of 2.2 do I need? Explicit version numbers would be very helpful; one of the biggest obstacles I've faced while trying to make heads or tails out of all this phone hacking is the sheer volume of version number and acronyms flying around...I'm figuring them out, but it's slow going. I'd hate to get the wrong version of something and screw things up. Also, are there any programs I should install before putting 2.2 on there? Not apps or anything, but any recovery programs or the like.

Thanks for reading, and I apologize for the newbie question. I've been reading these forums for a few days and while there is a ton of helpful info already out there, when it comes to something like this I like to have concrete answers and guidance. I don't trust my newbie self to make a decision that may or may not cause significant problems down the line.

*edit*

Dammit, just realized that this went into the 'all things root' forum. I have wayyyy too many android-related tabs open, sorry guys :( Though I suppose this is partially root/hack-related

At this point I see no reason not to do the OTA. even if they were to get the kexe process working to load ROMS it would still work on the new bootloader.

I'm actually thinking of going back and doing the OTA so that my fastweb download and new Appbrain features work. They don't work now because of I think the leak is from the droid2 which all have the same id.

so, my personal progression has been:
2.1>universal androot>ota2.2>droid2 root method>brick cuz im an idiot>sbf 2.3.13.
since i am on the 2.2 sbf, can i sbf back to 2.1 and then get back to ota 2.2? i have this weird glitch when i slide between the 7 different panels, the background freaks a bit (looks like a glitch in the matrix--if you know what i mean, almost like lag, but not, even when i do it slowly). never did that with rooted ota 2.2 or stock 2.1.

If you have the 2.2 OTA you can not use the 2.1 sbf or it will brick your device.

rite, but i am now on the sbf 2.3.13 after unbricking (so i technically dont have the OTA 2.2). is the OTA 2.2 still lurking/did it change something? i was under the impression that if you are on a 2.2 sbf, you can revert to 2.1 sbf.

no because the OTA changed your bootloader, which the 2.2 sbf does nothing to. even though you used a 2.2 system sbf you still have the updated bootloader which will prevent you from flashing back to 2.1 (read: it will brick your phone and theres no way back from it that we know of right now)

Maybe the confusion is what you think the 2.2sbf is. When you say you are "on the 2.2sbf" what do you mean?
