I got a new Droid X yesterday and I really want to get 2.2 on there, but after reading about the issues with the OTA version of 2.2, I'm hesitant to proceed unless I know exactly what path I'm going to take.
From my (admittedly limited) understanding, the OTA 2.2 changes the bootloader keys and thus 'locks' you in to that version of 2.2, correct? I know this screws over anyone wanting to go back to 2.1, but does this cause any hindrance for people doing anything other than trying to use the 2.1 sbf to go back to 2.1?
I ask this because I really don't want to cause any irreversible changes to my phone and close any of the few doors we X users have when it comes to modding our phones. Basically, I want to get 2.2 but do it in such a way that allows me the most freedom within the limitations the Droid X has. I don't want to download the OTA 2.2 only to find that I've severely limited my options. I don't care if I won't be able to go back to 2.1, but I do want to be able to install Tranquility, Obsidian, ZapX, FlyX, or any of those other custom roms that I've heard about.
What is the best path I should take here? Currently my phone says the following:
If the OTA 2.2 isn't the best route, what version of 2.2 do I need? Explicit version numbers would be very helpful; one of the biggest obstacles I've faced while trying to make heads or tails out of all this phone hacking is the sheer volume of version number and acronyms flying around...I'm figuring them out, but it's slow going. I'd hate to get the wrong version of something and screw things up. Also, are there any programs I should install before putting 2.2 on there? Not apps or anything, but any recovery programs or the like.
Thanks for reading, and I apologize for the newbie question. I've been reading these forums for a few days and while there is a ton of helpful info already out there, when it comes to something like this I like to have concrete answers and guidance. I don't trust my newbie self to make a decision that may or may not cause significant problems down the line.
*edit*
Dammit, just realized that this went into the 'all things root' forum. I have wayyyy too many android-related tabs open, sorry guys Though I suppose this is partially root/hack-related
