Denied another job...it's not easy

It's true, being a white male is difficult. Worse still if you're a straight white male. I mean, you suffer from lower pay on average, being treated like shit by institutions today, having racist slurs slung at you, having the media constantly portray you by terrible stereotypes and everything. Why, there's a history of your ethnicity being enslaved en masse, shipped off to be worked to death or sent to concentration camps just because of the color of your skin. I mean, gee.

I shed many, many tears for you, sir.

Worst thing you can do is beat yourself up or get upset as getting knocked back a few times can really affect your confidence. Just keep spirits high and keep trying youll get there. Just always look back and try to think of anything you might of done wrong and improve, always try to take positives from a knock back.

he's being punished for what people (that may or may not been related to him) before him did.

It's to a point where some companies will hire someone less qualified because of the color of their skin just to give the look of not discriminating.

I, too, have been looking to get out of my current location.... I'm looking for a lateral move. I have a boss who doesn't like me, but since I'm union, he actually has to have a reason to fire me and despite his best efforts of muck raking, has nothing (mainly since I don't do the unethical things he tried to pin on me). Well, now I'm trying to transfer out within the company, (no sense staying where I'm not wanted), but boss-man won't sign the transfer papers. Guess he loves conflict.

I am blackballed while employed. Not all times, and I understand losing out jobs to those with more experience/education/etc. but there have been a few cases where I was INFINITELY more qualified than the person who got the job. In fact, I have filed a grievance in one case that's currently being investigated.
Could be worse, though. I could be blackballed while unemployed like 2 others I know that used to work with me but hadn't become vested yet.

So, for now, I remain a contract worker only (no extras from this guy) and I will keep interviewing. I've had 11 interviews since January, for transfers, and I know the bossman knows... But I keep my head up and despite knowing what the results of any interview may be, I still try my best.

Intervenient - Are you employed and just looking for better? Sounds like you are a cop looking to get off patrol. Are you union?

Bleh. Desk job gives priority to those who are ethnically diverse.

Curse being a white male!

Can you explain further? Do you have proof that they weren't better qualified? or do you assume that they got it because they were a minority and trying to find a reason on why they were hired instead?

I've tried applying to many jobs and I'm a gay, first generation, Asian male. I've applied to about 15 different jobs since entering high school and have been interviewed 5 times and have received 0 acceptances. I'm not some idiot either. They were just other people more qualified than I was.

Keep trying! You're not the only person who is having trouble finding a job as evidenced by the unemployment rate. I'm sure also that there are tons of people from minority backgrounds who are in your exact position. Can you explain their issue?

Wait ... are ... you ... trying ... to ... say ... uh ... life's not FAIR?

**gasp**

While I will gladly commiserate with you about being rejected for a position or opportunity which I felt I was better suited for or more deserving of, this has been going on since Ramses II made his brother-in-law High Priest of the Upper Kingdom over Ashtephomen, the rightful successor as proscribed by RA.

Blaming the other guy will only make you bitter. If we as a culture can get over this misplaced attitude of entitlement, the country would return to prosperity so fast AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile would have trouble keeping up with all the new smartphone contracts (just to keep it semi-relevant for these forums).

lol @ lunatic.... that's a very David Miller way of saying it. haha... an ancient Egypt reference that works....

either way, I hear you on the bitter part. I know what's going on in my situation, I'm on the losing end of politics currently. I pissed off the wrong person. And I also realize, he thinks the situation is not fair as well, after all, he's gets up everyday and realizes that he can't fire me when it's clear he would have done that at the end of the fiscal year like he did to the 2 others he didn't like. I'm just at a good spot in my career and with the union, whereas the other 2 were not.

So fair is definately perspective.

black man doesn't think it's fair that his great grandfather was enslaved, but thinks it's fair he got the job over the white man (if that's what happened) because of past sins of the white man
white man thinks it's not fair black man got the desk job and that he's being punished for what his ancestors did.

I don't think it's fair I have to come to a place I don't want to work
my boss thinks it's not fair he can't fire me

it all is carbon nuetral at this point. I love running into my boss in the hallways and say "it's a great day to be at work here today" with a shit-eating grin on my face that says "you tried, but you failed" to him. lol

Nor does the migrant farm worker think it's fair that he picks lettuce all day for three bucks and can't get antibiotics for his sick kids in one of the most affluent countries because he can't get insurance. But the single mom trying to make end's meet by working a second job doesn't think it's fair that her taxes go up just to provide care for the uninsured and their families.

Several years ago, after being "downsized" from good job when the company was taken over, I was interviewed for a position as a department head at a local college. It looked promising as I had all the proper credentials, 20+ years of practical experience in the field and the right salary requirements. I was called back no less than five times for interviews with different and ever-increasing people of importance, each time being told that I was the leading candidate and the interview was "just a formality." After going around for almost three months and even going so far as to participate in a mock classroom, they hired someone else who had less experience and performed poorly in the classroom. Their reasoning was "we are going another direction."

I found out later that this was the guy they wanted all along and I was being used to negotiate his salary lower. Sure I was pissed, but i don't blame either the guy who got the job or the school. They were all simply trying to get what they wanted as was I. I just happened to lose that time.

Personally, I don't think it's fair that the Yankees can afford to buy winning ball teams every year.

A voice of reason and an adult perspective. Thank you. The whiny white-straight-middle-class frat boys stomping their feet were getting very old very fast. Hint, children--sometimes it's not because of "race." Sometimes there are people better qualified than you. You are going to be shocked, but let me tell you: it's not impossible for Asians/black people/whatever to be better-educated, more talented and just plain ol' better than you. Maybe you graduated from Community College of Buttcrack Nowhere and they came from Stanford. Maybe your resume is shitty. Set aside that entitlement and old-boy-club racism for a second, hmm? Because there's no way in hell they let you your competition's application or let you sit in for the interview, so how exactly do you know it's because they're black or Asian or gay? When do you get the chance to sit down and compare your resume to theirs?

he's being punished for what people (that may or may not been related to him) before him did.

Oh I know, if a person who's not white gets a job over someone who's white, it's always unfair and affirmative action. It's just not possible, never ever, that the non-white person has more work experience and better portfolio or academic transcript. Bow to the white master, boys, and recognize your inherent inferiority! How very dare you even apply for the same job/college as the master race! The impertinence of it. Back in the old days, those primitives knew their places, isn't that right?

This is the attitude you're displaying, in case you're not quick on the uptake.

i think you took that wayyy to far man. He wasnt implying other races aren't well educated or any of that. Maybe you are unaware, but yes what he is talking about DOES happen a lot. For instance: My father works for the city (fire fighter). On a civil service exam you actually get extra points for being a minority. When he was on the waiting list to be hired he was ahead in line in front of an african american. They tried to give the job to the other man before him because he was a minority, but after debating and threats of hiring a lawyer the job was given to my dad. A lot of times companies have to have a certain percentage of minorities employed at any given time. Doesn't sound equal to me.... you seem like a very angry person, i hope someday you realize not all white people are bigots with god-complexes

I'm a student who has to pay for college myself because I wasn't ethnically diverse enough to get a scholarship.

There are an awful lot of white males with scholarships and jobs, Intervenient.

Are you sure you've correctly identified the problem with regard to your difficulties? I'm thinking that the economy is the biggest factor, along with a "wait and see" attitude by many companies as to increasing their labor forces (which is ironic, as that impacts the economy negatively and increases the problem).

Lets try and get this post back on topic.

It sucks that you didnt get another job. as much as I hate working when im at work being unemployed was even worse. Just keep plugging away at those applications, find ways to tweak your resume to make it more appealing, And go out to bars/ clubs and meet new people try to find someone who may be able to pull you some strings.

You obviously have this "woe is me, it's not my fault, I deserve this or that" mentality so I am not surprised you haven't found an employer that will take you. Keep trying, get that chip off your shoulder and don't give up. If it were true that an employer will or will not hire you based on ethnicity then you probably wouldn't want to work for them anyway.

Good Luck bro this economy is hard on everyone not just you.

Oh please. You don't need to be a "bigot with [a] god complex"--prejudice can be insidious, expressed in little ways like this whole "oh no, the brown/black/yellow people are TAKING MY JOBS, WAHHHH" whinefest. Which is basically what this is. You may be familiar with this "oh no, the immigrants are taking away our jobs" from honest-to-goodness bigots. You may not be one yourself, but if you're expressing the same sentiment in just so many words, examine your own attitude.

Want to know how many non-white people are passed over for employment and promotions because their names "sound black" or sound "un-American"? I'll get you statistics. Want me to link to news articles about Middle-Easterners who are stopped at airports and interrogated because they're suspected of being terrorists? God yes, being white sure is hard. The hardest thing in the world, you martyrs you. No other hardship compares, no one is wronged more. Everyone else is stealing your jobs, your women, and probably out-reproducing you while living on your tax dollars. Take care, or bearing that cross might just break your spine.

If you walked into my office with one tenth the chip on your shoulder as you are projecting here in your posts, your resum

There are some programs that get you an almost-entirely-free-ride through college if you come from a certain background. I know a Cuban girl that got it. She deserved it, smart kid, but still. I got nothing for my grad degree :-/ I don't make a whole lot and have 2 kids. No extra money for me though. Also, I understand that financial aid isn't all that great for grad students in the first place so I signed everything without argument. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying it is a bad thing, but these financial assistance programs seem to be a little lopsided at times. Not always.

On the other hand however I got a decent amount for my undergrad, not as much as some other friends who were of different ethnic backgrounds that I know, but something was better than nothing. Looking at their situation, they needed it more than I did anyway. :)

I guess what I am getting at is that it doesn't always seem fair, and certain situations need to be treated differently, like grad school and an undergrad. Will it happen at work? Sure, depending on your manager. I'm sure there are other managers out there who do the exact opposite.

We're all people after all.

**on topic**
Never had this happen at a place of work before though.
