Another thing you can do with root is install custom ROMs. E.G., there is a leaked 2.01 HTC Hero ROM out right now. If we had root, we could have 2.01.

I previously searched all over for a custom ROMs for the Android and after reading further, I realized it wasn't for the Eris....Thanks again.
Configuring the device with the installed software and apps, with the included firmware as it is, seems the safest bet, in my opinion. The Eris seems quite well put together to this newbie.
When the next update comes, the much talked about and anticipated 2.0 or 2.1, some will be wanting a way to advance to a "leaked" subsequent update (2.5? 3.0?), I'm almost certain.
Between the pdf user guide and the great tips and tricks section here, along with posted problems and solutions in these threads, I feel no need to hack my new Droid Eris.
