Did I really make the right choice

Hi all

I love my desire, it really is a fantastic bit of kit and Android is awesome, there are some things though that really cause me problems and I start to ask myself, should I have gone for an iphone?

Internal memory: Yes, I know there are 3 methods to improve this; root, force to SD and 2.2 move to SD. Yes, I am a geek so could probably root, but after 5 weeks, I am not sure I want to yet? Force to SD, again, I could do this with a bit of time but 90% of the population wont know about this method. 2.2 move to SD, more apps have this feature now but not all. Even then, not all the app is moved. My internal memory is already full after 5 weeks, I have the phone for 2 years.

I have no chance of installing adobe air

WiFi with proxy settings: I work in a School so am unable to connect to the internet due to android not allowing proxy settings. This is a major flaw; it will stop educational establishments and businesses considering any android tablet. Ipads will dominate unless this is resolved. It also means I have to use my data allowance

Games and Apps: Although there are some nice ones around, they are not as polished as the ones available for iphone. Games for iphone are superior by far and are on par with devices designed purely for gaming.

As said, loving my desire but these are major limitations.

on the whole, it sounds like you really made the wrong choice.

i hope you're not tied to a contract or it could be a decision you'll really regret.

you talk about other people but the phone is for yourself.
if you can handle a bit of geeky tech thats all that matters, not whether other people can find this info.

i agree it should support proxy but it doesnt and there are many other devices that dont.
Thing is though you work in a school. mobile devices such as android/iphones shouldnt be able to get within the security infrastructure of a school for various reasons. Im quite happy that a phone cannot tap into the schools wireless and get proxy as they could then use an app to tunnel and get to whatever they want.

this is true, i phone is better for games but if i was true to myself i dont really play games on my phone as i dont have time when im on the move and if im not on the move i use my pc.


you see there is not actually a phone that caters for you.
you need Android for your geekiness
you need Iphone for games
you need blackberry for corporate solutions and proxy/firewall connectivity

couldn't say really.

i didn't root my phone but i did use the quick fix which allows me to install apps to the phone memory.

i can use my works WiFi network without issues and i have an unlimited data plan.

the range and quality of android apps is fantastic and the games are OK too.

in short, i love my desire.

I actually find this really interesting. I'm in a very similar position as you. I bought my desire 6 weeks ago and have the same drawbacks as you. But I thought about it, and i'm happy with mine - and I'll tell you why.

1. You have to remember that Android is a very new platform. Yes, it may not have some things like Wow factor of an iPhone, the Wifi with proxy settings and the development of the app store. But it's much newer. And it's developing at quite an extraordinary rate. All of these things will no doubt come, especially the Android Market - you just have to wait. The market for example is gaining more and more apps everyday. And developers such as EA are only just beginning to see it's full potential. Much like developers with the app store did when it first came out. I don't really think it's particularly fair to compare android and apple on applications as obviously the app store has a massive head start and is currently obviously going to win.

2. The wifi + proxy settings - fine so it doesn't have it but you chose to buy the phone. Hopefully it will come in a future update yes, but I think its a bit unfair to purchase the phone, knowing it lacked this and then come on here and moan about the loss of it.

3. The internal memory - The most irritating thing imaginable I agree. Having said that, my guide http://androidforums.com/desire-tip...apps-sd-card-unrooted-device-noobs-guide.html helps a lot. If you do a factory reset, and then start installing apps from then you will be amazed at how much it saves. It doesn't require rooting, technical know how or void your warranty. It's a win win situation / process.

4. Think of the benefits. Personally, I love being able to make it my own phone. I pull it out and people go oh whats that its cool because they haven't seen it before. Whereas on an iPhone, everyone looks the same and they all have the same apps. And also, what was once part of the wow factor of iPhones was that they were rare and expensive. Whereas now, it seems every second kid has one so really it isn't the same. I love the wifi router feature, I love the ability to use flash, I love the ability to have something different and I love that my phone is personal. There are so many things....

5. Cost. For starters, yes it has its drawbacks but I paid

Im pretty sure the new sense will fit on the system partition which is used for the rom, rather than eat into your internal memory.

If it sits in system but increases the system partition size, that would be awful.
