storing photos?? looking for suggestions

I currently have a Imac desktop and Acer win 7 laptop. The options on where to save pictures drive me nuts. I can save it on a HD, burn them to a dvd, upload them. My ADD goes over load when I think about the best way to save them. Id like so weather im uploading to my laptop or desktop they go to the same place and can easily access them. Any ideas?

You could try a network drive. It's an eternal hard drive with network capabilities, so both computers can access it and store what they need, and it's available from either one regardless of which you used to initially upload them. You can also access it from anywhere on the planet, provided it's connected and you have a pc with internet access.

Checkout Picasa and PicasaWeb. That's what I use for my photos. It works really nicely. Imports your photos from your camera, automatically syncs them to PicasaWeb, where obviously they're viewable from anywhere, including the photo Gallery on your Android phone, which integrates with PicasaWeb.

I upload my pictures, keeps them offsite and safe. I was using Yahoo Flickr but found it was often blocked in China, so now I use Apple MobileMe. MobileMe been one of the few western photo sites which is fully accesible in China.

I have over 50G of pictures now, got our first digicam around the year 1999 or 2000 (was $500) and never took a film pic again. I started looking at buying more space in Picasa then found out that their mobile app/site will only support a limited number of albums/pictures. Flickr got bought by yahoo so its only a matter of time before it starts trying to install spyware on relatives systems that try to look at the pictures like everything else yahoo does. Some of the others don't preserve all the exif or shrink the pictures so I'm loking at just getting a big drive and making a file/web server at home.

This is exactly what I want to do..Music and videos I can get again but I remember when I was a kid my mother lost her purse and the only thing she cared about losing our baby pictures. Made me realize how important they are..somebody returned the purse too believe it or not

Thats why I wanted to use picasa, my testing shpws that it preserves everything in the picture so it would work as a different backup

You can buy a large chunk of storage and simply put your files into the dropbox folder and they will automatically be uploaded to dropbox and be made available to any computer that is logged into your dropbox account regardless of where it is (so long as that computer has an internet connection). The good thing is that it works across platforms and the entire process is automatic.

I run the same dropbox account on my mac, my windows rig, my linux rig and my Android phone and I'm constantly swapping files between the four. You get 2GB of free space if you'd like to try it out.

If you do your own, make sure to do backups regularly. 2 days ago I had to restore my system drive because of a virus. That included all my pictures too. I just back up to another external disk. I keep 10 days back using Norton Ghost every night.

how much for say IDK 10 gigs?
Is it monthly or yearly?

Prob with dropbox is its just a file sharing site, doesn't provide the photo displaying function. I don't want to have to use two services.

If you want display capabilities, then also try Myphotoalbum.com . You can set up an album under a specified URL (eg. www.yourname.myphotoalbum.com); upload your pics en masse; organize them into albums; decorate the albums; and make them available to other users, who can then view them or order pic sets as they wish.

It's kind of like Photobucket, but without all the adds and designed for viewing on-site, as opposed to link out to other sites. I forget the prices, but a single yearly payment buys you a crapload of space.

That's the default setting on PB. You can reset your settings so as to allow pics to save at larger resolution. Don't quote me on it, but I think you might have even fewer restrictions with PB if you pay for an account.

For very large files, I prefer Imageshack to PB. Their gallery set up sucks though.

Agreed, but for saving very large image files without restrictions, I have yet to find a better free online repository. I only use it for large file storage and deeplinking though. I never use image shack for gallery purposes. Most of my regular gallery usage is split between photobucket, Myphotoalbum, and to a lesser degree picasa.

Imageshack is great for simply hosting images. I've used it for years and it's always been good.

Dropbox - Home - Online backup, file sync and sharing made easy.

You can install it on both of your computers and store them in a cloud service. It can store files, photos, anything. I haven't used Picasa yet.
