Root Want to make sure this is right

I am getting more daring and starting to understand Android a little more each day. I went to the leaked 2.2 when it came out and rooted it a few days before the OTA came out because we were having problems with our home internet so I needed a wifi router at home. Then I did the SBF back to 2.1 and got the 2.2 OTA and rooted that. Yesterday I added the build.prop to my phone and added a new boot animation.

So I have been thinking about deodexing my phone and adding a theme. From another thread I saw that 928 had out a theme that also DeOdexs the phone at the same time. So I was going to do this, but since this is the first time I want to make sure I do it correctly and I could not find any specific step-by-step instructions

I have downloaded the 928DroidBlackGlassX-DroidX-OTA2315-DeOdexEERR-THEME zip. I made a back-up of my system yesterday with Titanium Backup. I just got the Droid X Recovery Bootstrap. So I think I am ready to go, but want to make sure. I have the Droid X Recovery Bootstrap and ROM Manager installed already.

First I made Titanium Backup and have this on my SD card as update.zip in case any thing goes wrong.

Then I put 928DroidBlackGlassX-DroidX-OTA2315-DeOdexEERR-THEME zip on my SD card (in the root directory).

Then all I should have to do is in the ROM Manager select install ROM from SD Card and then find the 928 zip. Correct?

Just want to make sure before I am on here posting PLEASE HELP ME I THINK I HAVE BRICKED MY PHONE.

You have it almost right.

You NEED to make a BACKUP of your current rom with Rom Manager first. That is something entirely different from a Titanium Backup of your system settings and apps + data. That is the only way you can recover from something bad with a new rom/theme install should something go wrong.

Then, when installing a new rom you should always wipe Data and Cache first. You do that from ClockworkMod Recovery before doing the install zip from sd card step. You can boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery using either rom manager or bootstrapper.

I haven't used 928 Droid's method to deodex, I used the manual method.

Thanks, making the back-up now and then I will try this. Glad I asked because if it did not work I would have been in trouble with no good back-up.

Everything worked just fine, did not even need the back-up, but I am going to keep it just in case.

Make lots of backups.

When you get this one set up and running the way you like, make a backup of it.

Then if you ever want to try another theme, or mess something up you can go back to this one or the earlier one.

As a side note, you can change the name of them in Rom Manager before you do the backup, not after.

Backups are your best friend. As mentioned above, always backup before doing anything to your device.

Make a backup regularly as well. You will only recover everything up till your last backup. Any changes, updated apps etc. will have to be redone if you have to restore to an older backup.

Thanks for the advice. So it seems like I am doing all I can with my phone now since it does not sound like true custom ROMs will be happening.

With my TP2 I started flashing and could not seem to stop because I always wanted to try the best new thing out there thinking it would make it better. My X has been awesome out of the box, but I am learning more about it and just keep making it better.

There really are some talented people out here who do some amazing work. There are also a lot of smart people here that can really help others and pass on what they have learned, which just makes us all smarter.

So is there no need to backup with Bootstrap Recov. if you do a backup with Titanium and ROM Manager? I'm in the same spot as the one your responding to.

I was under the impression the Bootstrap was all you needed before installing the zip for your theme.

I've wondered the same...are the rom manager backup and nandroid backup 2 different methods that do the same thing...or do you need both backups to survive?

Same question as above?? Is the ROM Manager and Bootstrapper back ups the same, or should both be done?

I personally am not sure. I have done one in both so far with no problem just incase one will work and the other will not and I mess up my phone. So far all has been well. I am sure that someone will have a better answer.
