Stop Apps from opening up when phone boots ?

Hi,

The only way I know this is having installed a task manager. There would be no other way of knowing this.
I have about 14 apps downloaded form the market. Not too many, but I was susrprised to see applications like shop savvy and My Backup automatically start up when my phone boots up.
Whilst in the apps themselves, there seems to be no way of stopping this behaviour.
Why would they do this ? Why is there no kill switch fro these apps natively for android ? It seems there is a lot of chatter about whether or not task managers are good for the platform, or whether we should just let android do it's thing on it's own. I'm really in two minds whether to carry on using a TM or not. It's for reasons such as shop savvy opening up on it's own when I don't want it to that I'm tempted to keep in, if only for my own piece of mind, and the ability to kill apps that don't need to be on. This MUST have a direct correlation with battery usage.

Anyway, I have to say that I've had most platforms, iphone, blackberry, symbian, and Android really does seem to me to be the best one yet. I am extremely happy with my Hero.

OK, so here is a case in point.
I'm sitting here working, chatting with my wife on Google Talk, and I open up my task manager to see that Sprint Navigation has decided to open itself up.
WTF?
com.telenav.app.android.sprint to be precise.
WHY?
IS the only way to remove these god-forsaken sprint apps to root the phone ? Is there any other way ?

My last rant.

When I switched my phone on this morning, I had approximately 70M of available memory.

I have no apps running at present, and I now have 55M

I guess what I'd like to know is what is a decent amount of available memory to have, and should I be worried if it goes does to beloew 30M or even down to the 20's ?

I'm a noob to all this multi tasking stuff on android, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I regularly run with 20/30mb and have no issues, so don't worry too much about that. You can download an app called startup auditor, this will allow you to disable apps that startup with the phone. I use it myself and its very good.

Should I be rebooting every night to free up memory ?

I've noticed that effect too... when I boot up, theres around 90 there (after killing all the start up apps) but just a few hours later, at most, I'm lucky if I can scrape together 50ish, with no apps running (not counting those that I've told Task killer to ignore of course). Where's it all gone?!

Does it matter though? If the android system is handling it whats the problem? Like I said before if I check during the day theres like 30mb free, it has no negative effect on me. Just not sure we should see it as a problem.

Having said that I find that a reboot once a week is good for my phone.

Probably not, in all honesty. Not much anyway, I do find the phone is a fair bit slower if I let it get to 20 or 30 but... I should probably be working than playing with my phone anyway... I really should put it down occasionally, it's becoming a bit of an addiction!

First, why does it matter that apps are "running" at start up ? They arent really running. They are in a state ready to be run. If you use other apps the will replace the ones shown at start up.

Thats the way Android (not just Droid) works. You dont need ti "kil" apps to free up space. The device will do that on its own. The developers built it that way and thats the way it works.

Some people have seen an increase in battery life after uninstalling task killer. Why ? They arent always using it to close apps that arent really running anyway.

Where is the missing 30 ?

The missing 30MB is more then likely being used as cache. Do a search on the forums. There are a few threads about clearing the cache.

Too many post said about task killer program, and the final conclusion that make sense should be Task killer doesn't help increasing battery life, it only helps increasing the speed of the phone when freeing RAM.
I installed task panel to help me freeing RAM to increase phone speed, it works great. When RAM goes down to 40, the phone becomes laggy

My own currently has 'only' 25MB free and shows no 'lag' at all.

Yeah, u right, I forgot to mention that, browsers or games, music definitely drain battey.
25mb and no lag, u got a strong processor and phone man, maybe I'm not so lucky when buying this phone, lol. But I still love it
