Help Many question on the incredible from a big noob

I just bought a Droid incredible and I am practically brain dead when it comes to the subject.

I have many questions and suffer from not being able to state all of them.

1. What are things I should do to make sure my droid works to perfection (updates how to etc..)
2. what is rooting?
3. When my screen is off (phone not off) and I get a text message how come the screen does not turn on and have a message across the middle.
4. Can I jail break the phone?
5. How can I sync music from itunes onto it?
6. How do I use the swype feature for my daily texting ?
7. I am very confused and want very dumb-downed help

First, WELCOME to the Incredible. I'd advise you to not get into rooting until you've grown used to and gotten to know your phone for a while. BTW, Jail Breaking is Apple, Rooting is Android. I know it's semantics, but by rooting you are accessing the root directory of your phone and once you do that you have control over all that your phone can do.

There are many ways to sync iTunes to your phone. One way is by downloading DoubleTwist from the market and then downloading it to your phone. I know there are several other ways, but I say, why sync, just connect your phone to your computer, click the option to make your phone a hard drive, then drag and drop your music in to your music folder on your SD card. Personally, I will never use another Apple product, but that is the beauty of this OS you actually have choices over what you want to use and what you don't.

The best way to get your phone to "pop up" when you get a new text message is by downloading Handcent from the market. There are those that don't like it, but it's the only text message app I use. Under options in that app, there is an option to turn on pop up notifications. That will pop up when you get a new text message even when your phone is locked and the screen is off. If you want to use the stock messenger you can use this app --> http://www.appbrain.com/app/sms-popup/net.everythingandroid.smspopup and it does the same thing as Handcent.

No rooting is NOT illegal although it will void your warranty. I'm not sure what you mean by sync card. If you mean the app I mentioned, Double Twist, it's free in the market and you will need to download it for your computer as well.

Here is another option that my dad uses on his Droid X. He likes it and says it works well, but I can't say it does on my Incredible because I've never used it. iSyncr for PC - Android app on AppBrain

How do I use the swype feature for my daily texting ?

Come back as often as you need, no dumb questions, there is always someone that can help you here.

You can't use swype without being the the beta testing program. If you do a google search you can find it, but you can't "legally" obtain the program through here or XDA. The folks around here are VERY serious about not posting a link to swype, so don't ask.

You can get shapewriter from the market, it is very similar to swype.

If you want to change keyboards, first you have to go to menu>settings>Keyboards> and then you have to put a check mark beside the keyboard to make it active. After you do that you need to open your text editor, email, etc. and long press inside the text box. A menu will pop up. In that menu you will see an option to change input method. Click it and you will see all of your keyboards listed. Choose which one you want and you will now be able to use it.
