Help How much app space does the Droid X really have?

I can not find a post, but sure it has been asked. How much space does the Droid X have available installing apps? Not counting apps2sd, of course.

The Inc has an 8gb flash, but 6.6gb is for media and 748mb is allocated for app storage.

I know the Droid X has 8gb internal, but is all of it allocated for apps or just some of it?

Also, do people run into the infamous "Low on space" error, even if plenty of space still free? I run into the error on the Inc with 380mb still free, so technically, I really only have 368mb for apps.

Thanks!

So tons of space for apps already and no need for apps2sd- correct? Seems like Droid X's approach is more stable than the issues with apps2sd (pull card out, slower performace, some apps do not support it, etc).

How much space have people used that you are aware of? If I count my apps2sd space used, I would have about 1.2gb used, since Let's Golf, Nova, Sandstorm and some other 3D games take up most of the total space.

I love my Inc, but the app space problem is really starting to get to me. Four different roms and four full resets, no big caches = same problem: "Low on space" error even with 380mb still free for phone storage. Very lame. I am not the only one with this problem. Seems Incredible does not really have 748mb free, even though the device says it does.

Considering 50MB would be an incredibly large app it almost has too much space.

A lot of apps are storing their data files on the SD card, but many apps can be very large - we're not just talking about "applications" that perform some specific function like a launcher. I have iBird Pro which has data files for 900+ bird species - pictures, drawings, sound files, etc. Games could easily come with hundreds of megs in map files, textures, in-game movies or sounds. Any app that takes large blocks of data from the cloud and makes it available offline can be huge. Navigation apps that store their maps locally are very large.

edit: sorry, didn't mean to distract from the, "my first computer was older than your first computer." :D

For amusement's sake, my first computer was a Commodore 64, and I even owned one of these monstrosities:

Neither the HTC implementation nor the Motorola implementation is ideal.

Idealy there would be a way to share the internal storage for both apps and media. Either automatically, or manually through some setting.

Some people will need more app space then media space, while others will have the opposite need.

I have about 100 apps installed on my X but still have over 6GB free on the internal storage, but my 16 gb sdcard is 100% full. It would be nice to be able to use some of the internal storage for media. But instead, I've had to buy a 32gb sd.

So I think idealy, if that 8GB internal storage can be allocated to be both an app storage and media/data storage area, that would make it much more useful to a lot more people.

and to date myself, my first computer was an 8086 based with 640k memory and two 360k 5.25" floppy drives. also had a few apple II's and a TRS80 with 128k memory and a tape as the drive.

With almost 150 apps on my phone it still shows I have 6 gigs of storage space left. I honestly don't see how you could ever run out of app space on this phone.

My SD card is another story, I probably could fill it quite easily if I tried to move all of my music from my computer onto it. But all I do is move my recent playlist onto it and change it out when needed. I see no real need to have 3500 songs stored on my phone.

Yep, I have had them all too:

1. C64
2. Amiga 500 & 1200
3. Pentium 90 with 8 "whole" mb of ram and a 1gb hard drive (leading edge in 95).
4. In computer electronics classes for my undergrad, we used TRS80s for programming chip instructions of our board design projects :)

Good times :)

I may give my Inc to my son and get the X, since none of the current roadmap phones seem appealing and the rumor of a 4.3" version of the Incredible appear to be correct, but actually going to Tmo and not VZW.

I agree that nothing coming out by years end looks to be able to tempt me away from the X. The Droid Pro looks like something my ex might be interested in since she loves her Blackberry Tour and it has basically the same form factor as a lot of Blackberries.

The only really interesting phone coming is the Defy, but it's going to TMo, which is a shame because with the gorilla glass and water resistant case it would be great to have it as an option at Verizon. Hopefully something like it will come out before my contract is up because I've always wondered why they don't at least try to make phones more resistant to the elements such as water, dust and especially scratches. So having something like that in the line up would be most appreciated.

A lot of the apps I have installed right now are 150-200mb like Nova, Dungeon Hunter, Hero of Sparta , Let's Golf etc. I have tried deleting and reinstalling several times but they always install to the sdcard using an extra 1.5GB of space that I really need.

Does anybody know how to force apps to install to the internal instead of the sdcard?

My first IBM based PC had 2 MB ram and a 20MB hard drive.

I remember when my dad got his first computer. It was an Apple McIntosh. It came with 1MB of RAM and no HD. You had to load whatever you were going to use by floppy disk. He went and bought 4MBs of additional RAM and the cost was $400. ($100/MB.... Wow!) Then he decided he needed a HD. He purchased the 40MB model. (If I remember correctly, it cost about $300) It was about the size of the VCR's of 10 years ago.

When he upgraded to the Apple II, he gave me the McIntosh. I used it for a while until I bought my first PC. The Mac went out into the garage where it stayed for years until my wife finally convinced me to get rid of it about 10 years ago. Wish I had it now, it would be a museum piece/collectors item.

Yikes, good point! Due to this, the 8gb is probably overkill, since most large apps install data to sd card anyways. Funny- Inc does not have enough and X has too much ;)

Better to have too much, but the extra media space is handy. I keep vids on the 6.6gb internal and music on my sd card. Shame all of the apps do not have option install to the internal space, since plenty for the data that normally goes to sd card with the X. Wastes space on the sd card.

any apps on the sd card you should be able to move to the phone and back to sd card within each apps setting. goto settings/applications/manage applications and click on the app you want to move. then select move to sd or move to phone.

Gameloft games already install the initial app download (13mb for DungeonHunter) to the internal memory but it downloads the additional game data (200mb) to the sdcard with no option to move it as far as I can tell.

hey, quick, can anyone tell me why i would want to move all my apps to sd? 6gb is alot and i dont think i would ever fill that. whats the benefit besides if you filled that space up?

If you have a DX you should be trying to do the opposite, get all the apps moved to the internal memory.

Hi. How do you move the vids from the gallery to the phone internal memory? Thanks.

They are placed in the media memory on Inc. Inc has phone (748mb) and internal media (6.6gb) memory.

It would be cool to move the data from sd to internal. Seems that X has too much space allocated to device storage. Seems better off to allocate 2gb for apps and leave the rest for media, but probably simpler to map as they did.

The apps should have the option to but on phone memory, but most phones do not have so much space like the X.
