Well, I just bought myself a brand-spanking new Samsung Vibrant from T-mobile the other day. I was then informed that the JI6 update was being pushed out via OTA. Only problem is, my plan was to use this thing via wifi only (I bought a 1 month voice-only Flex Plan to activate it). According to T-mobile, if I want any updates, my only choice is to switch over to a monthly data plan (big old $70 a month bill).

So I turn to the experts on these forums... is there a way to install these updates manually over wifi? Or is it time to take the phone back? :(

Your best bet is to learn how to use Odin, a program for flashing electronic devices including phones. You can't do it with Wifi however.

Here is a valuable resource for the Vibrant:

[REF]***Vibrant Directory(Bible)***(10/12/2010)*** - xda-developers

You will need to install the drivers for the Vibrant to use on the computer (Windows only). See the Bible page for the link to the drivers.

About Odin:

{REF} ODINv1 The Visual Guide - Please Sticky - xda-developers

I would suggest you do some more searching on how to use Odin. It's not hard, but can be intimidating at first.

You will need the ROM for the update. You can find it here:

Offical JI6 update - INFO thread - xda-developers (the last link under Roms (Odin): on the Bible page.

It's a fair amount of work initially, but it's good information and experience to have. If you are meticulous and can follow directions well you should have no trouble.

Read first. Make sure you understand things. Ask if you need help. Do all these things before you do any updating/flashing of your phone.

Good luck! :)

You can update via Kies Mini.

How Do I Update The Software On My T-Mobile SGH-t959 (Vibrant) Phone To JI6 Through Kies Mini?

Tmobile may not support it, but Samsung release a special version of Kies specifically for the Tmo JI6 update it appears, so Samsung should support it at least.

When did this Kies Mini pop up? I'd been away for a few days and learned about it today.

Have you used it? If so, did it work well? Does it automatically retrieve the JI6 update for you?

I have not used it yet. My first Vibrant bricked so the replacement is on the way, I dare not try it on my son's which I am currently borrowing until I get mine. Though his is not hardware locked, "theoretically" I should be ok. Thoeretically...:D
