hello, i need to know is it possible to unroot a HTC droid eris?
if so can it be restored to what it was like when bought?
and will it be fully functional just as if i bought it brand new?

i noticed that people are unrooting to take it back to the store. i bought my phone rooted and actually like the HTC eris software it came with. i need help!

Your going to find that if you unroot your phone its going to run like total crap. The eris is a great phone rooted but unrooted its a brick. If you like the stock look and feel I recommend flashing the xtrSense ROM as it basically looks just like stock but runs soooooooo much smoother. Make sure to do a nandroid backup before flashing a new rom and don't forget to do a full wipe as well. There's plenty of documentation on this forum on the proper way to flash a new rom. This rom is so stable you can just flash it and forget its even rooted if you don't want to mess with any of the cool features.

If you used the (jcase) one-click rooting method or my "dummies" method, this:

[ROM][9/25/2010]FlashBack15 v1 -Return to Factory Stock - xda-developers

will return your phone to be identical to stock. You download and install it just like you would any other ROM. Read the instructions carefully & pay careful attention to the fact that the OTA takes 12-14 minutes once it starts to install (make sure your phone is well charged and do not interrupt it!)

If you are merely looking for the same software experience, there are other alternatives to unrooting, for instance xtrSense or PlainJaneT2 - ROMs that give you stock behavior plus better performance and/or extra root goodies.

You'll need your /sdcard for the time that you are downloading and flashing the flashback ROM.

Are you asking if you can take the /sdcard out of your phone? (i.e., does the phone need it to run?). I believe you can run the phone without an /sdcard, but I think some apps might use or try to store data on there at times...(app-specific?). The act of rooting doesn't really mess with your /sdcard except for when you tell it to (i.e., to make a Nandroid backup or move files used whilst rooting).

Also, regarding rooted or leaked... The waters are a little muddied nowadays. You can be leaked and rooted . If you were leaked, you would have had one of the 2.1 leaks installed on your phone (these 2.1 leaks were not rooted (although to confuse things even further, there was a 2.1 root leak, but you are probably not running that)).

I think you just really want to know if you are rooted, right? Easiest way to tell is to download the Android Terminal Emulator app (free in the Market) and type "su" (you might have to long-press the menu key to bring-up the keyboard). If you get a "#" after typing "su", then you are rooted, otherwise you'll still see the "$" prompt indicating that you are not rooted.

The prompt is actually "sh-3.2$"? Haven't seen that before....

Did you hit / press the carriage-return character? (the little curved arrow at the bottom right-hand corner of the keyboard?).

It should show something like this:

Well, you are definitely rooted (and running Kaos Froyo (Android 2.2), which is pretty cool ).

If you wanted to return to a pretty-much stock 2.1 look-and-feel, then you might like to install Praetorian's suggestion of xtrSense. Its a very good Sense-based ROM. There's serveral thread's about this ROM here on AF where folks more familiar with it than me could fill you in on the details regarding its awesomeness:

Yep, you can return to stock (1.5 or 2.1)--just follow the links to this thread [ROM][9/25/2010]FlashBack15 v1 -Return to Factory Stock - xda-developers like a few of us (and notably, the author of this thread, erisuser1) already pointed-out.

Just download the FlashBack15_v1.zip file from that thread (you'll probably have to register on XDA first in order to be able to download--its not a biggie, they are a very well-known site with lots of great folks eu1 (aka bftb0 on XDA)) and move it to the top-level of your /sdcard (i.e., not in any subdirectories). If you download it from Windows and transfer it while your phone is mounted as a "disk drive" via the USB cable, drag and drop it to the drive letter corresponding to how your phone is mounted in Windows Explorer. Be sure to do a "safe eject" to ensure that all of the file has transferred properly to your phone. Also, if you really do want to return to Android 1.5 confused, be sure to download the stop-OTA_v1.zip file too.

After you do that, then power your phone off. Next, you'll boot into the custom recovery menu by pressing and holding the volume button in the down position (volume-DOWN) and then press the end/power button. When you see the three skateboarding little green androids, press the volume-UP to enter into recovery. When you see the recovery menu (it'll look like figure 33 in this post http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html#post1186824), select "Wipe" by scrolling down with the trackball and pressing the trackball. Now select "Wipe data/factory reset" and confirm your selection by pressing the trackball again. By the way, the above link is an excellent, visual resource for doing everything I'm describing here (again, written by the esteemed erisuser1 ).

After the wipe has completed, use the volume-down button to navigate back to the main menu. Then select "Flash zip from sdcard". If you've properly moved your FlashBack15_v1.zip file to the top-level of the /sdcard directory, you'll see this file listed. Scroll to and select this file and press the trackball to confirm the file you want to flash. Give it time to flash your .zip file...it'll take a minute or two...

Now, if you really want to return to 1.5, you will now flash the stop-OTA_v1.zip file which will prevent your phone from getting an automatic over-the-air (OTA) update to 2.1.

After you are done flashing, use the volume-down toggle to return to the main menu. Select "Reboot system now". Be patient while it boots-up...its got a lot of stuff to do...

You are very welcome (for my small part anyway--erisuser1 did all of the heavy lifting--I cited/referenced his work several times in the above posts ).

I hope your phone is back to your satistfaction. If you ever do feel the need to re-root, you'll still have that option. In fact, you can root your phone "as is" without losing your current setup or any stock 2.1 "goodness" (i.e., without replacing your Android 2.1 operating system with a custom ROM--all your apps and such would not be affected). You can't do as much, but you can install root-only apps and have the ability to overclock (to make your phone a little more responsive) and underclock (to make your battery last a little longer). No rush, no pressure, just wanted you to be aware of your options.

thank you for all the information, i was wrong i didnt want the cupcake software i wanted the 2.1 software. i thiought the 2.1 was called cupcake. and thank you for explaining it in terms that i would understand.
