Desire is T3 Phone Of The Year !

Fully deserved, well done HTC too for tech brand.

But booo to the bizzare "commuter gadget of the year" which went to the iPhone4 - they had to get it in there somewhere! (the same award last year went to the iPhone 3Gs - probably because the Hero won phone of the year; cynical, moi?)

Anyway, Woooo Hoooo for the Desire!

The Desire can't win commuter gadget of the year with such a shocking battery life :p

I go down south every other weekend and on a 3 to 3 and a half hour journey I can take my battery from 100% to about 10% by playing games, listening to music, texting and browsing. I need to charge it on the train to feel it will comfortably last the day, but that's only possible when I have a window seat!

yep, most trains have a carriage with plug sockets fro laptops etc.

*good trains

Anyway, Desire is a better commuter gadget.

eg,
  • full webpages
  • larger screen but still portable
  • wifi hotspot to connect other devices you may use when on train
  • multitasking functionality (i do things on my desire just not possible on an iphone)
  • etc etc

In a way I don't like this.

I hope it doesn't make HTC think that their crest of the wave success will make them lazy in their future products.

What I'm getting at is the hardware. I like my Desire but the hardware really lacks compared to Nokia models I have owned in the past. Not that I can go back to Symbian, but having proper dual stereo speakers, a proper camera sensor and lens (don't talk to me about megapixels) is something I really miss.

I appreciate smartphone batteries are always going to be heavily used, but I fear that HTC may simply just bring out future phones in the same style as my most hated company of all time: Apple. i.e. bring out phones that add new features but don't address urgent pressing old features, such as battery, camera, speakers, stability, holding it in your left hand without reception dropping out! Time will only tell.

In a line: I hope HTC's success doesn't cause them to lower their quality on future products now that they have a growing fanbase of brand loyal supporters.

Good for them though!

I agree EmperorKabir, but I think it's more likely to encourange HTC to try even harder in the future. They've come a long way in the last year or so and I'm sure they will want to build on that success rather than sit back and enjoy where they are now.

Personally, I wouldn't change anything about my phone except 2 things: more phone storage and an improved battery (or better battery management through Android updates).

My main issue with the Desire is the messed up multi-touch screen. I'm still not sure whether it's technological or software based but it's clear that the Desire simply does not offer true multi touch. Games that use on-screen buttons are unplayable.

My Desire easily lasts, 30 hours with lots of use.

Oh man. Here we go again.....

Anyway, I really, really don't understand the prevailing hostility towards the iPhone4. It's an amazing piece of technology.

Until someone explains the knee-jerk reaction that amounts to "Jobs is Satan and Apple is the Spawn of Satan" I'll put it down to pure envy.

The Desire is awesome but you know what? So is the iPhone4. Get over it.

I am surprised the Desire won phone of the year when the sound levels for listening to music and watching videos is very very poor.

Unless you're in a sound proof room listening to music using headphones is a frustrating experience, even with the sound at max levels!

Other than this issue the phone i fantastic but I do think this is something that would have prevented a top award being given :)

Could you be specific?

The other week I was driving with Navigation going, updating itself with traffic. I also had RAC traffic running in the background - also updating itself so I could switch back and forth between them for double-checking traffic problems. Try that on an iPhone.

Fact is the iPhone doesn't multi-task. The API allows tasks to share but thats really not the same thing. Any time you have two things working at the same time without knowledge of each other you're doing something the iPhone4 cannot. So any widget really.

And that's without even mentioning making a call while holding it "wrong". :D

Dont blame the phone mate. You obviously have the wrong kind of headphones. There is a thread on here explaining this.

I've got a nice set of Samsung BT headphones and don't even need it on full volume.

The sound quality is as good if not better than both my old N95 and N96 through headphones and unless you are some chav sitting on the bus playing his music there is no need to play music through the speaker.
