Epic vs Evo

I'm up for an upgrade on October 1 and have been waffling on which phone to get. Like you I'm coming from a Hero. You've lived the Samsung nightmare. I don't think I want to go there. Evo it is. Thanks for the post man. It helped to make up my mind.

Considering that this thread is full of people praising the Epic over the EVO.... I don't think you read it at all.

My reasons for initially wanting the Evo were purely due to the interface and screen size. I was able to play with one for quite a while at a station set up in the MOA. Just love the Sense UI.

I recently got to play with the Epic a couple of times an was dissapointed the screen wasn't as big as the Evo even though it was clearer and that I wasn't as keen on the UI but then I've read and read and READ up on both phones and found out what the likes of Launcher Pro can do....I've decided on the Epic.

Things that are important to me and helped my choice:

1. Screen quality....both visually and strength of glass. Quality>Size IMO.
2. Battery life. Everything I've read has shown the Epic's battery life to be superior.
3. Speed. I impatient and again, from what I've read, the Epic loads things faster, has better fps for gaming etc...
4. Qwerty Keyboard. Not sure if i'll prefer it or not as I enjoy to T9 when texting but I imagine for web browsing and Facebook use, the qwerty keyboard will become invaluable.
5. Camera quality. From what I've researched, the photo/video quality are better with the Epic. I use my phone camera more than anything else. Having a young child just has you taking pictures and video all the time.

I can't wait to be rid of AT&T and my crappy LG Vu at the beginning of Nov. I have my Launcher Pro setup all ready to go!

I use my phone for pictures of my little son. It's important to capture great moments with him so I use the camera and video capture a lot. The HTC EVO totally FAILS. In video comparisons you can see how choppy it is. One video i had taken on vacation was good quality on the EVo, then half way through the video the Audio went out of sync with the video.. freaking annoying. EVO FAiled me too many times. Other than the camera the EVO is a great phone in every area. I don't need physical keyboard don't care for it.

The Epic's Camera and effects are amazing the panoramic feature was so amazing I sold my buddy on buying one who has an IPHONE 4. Battery life is wack. but eh..
For me it comes down to phone usage, I use the camera a lot and the Epic wins for me.

I use my Evo for casual videos of my little son. The quality sucks, but the fact that I can instantly share the vid with all my family and friends is why I do it. I had the evo filming in labor and postpartum.

But I also bought a dedicated video camera that shoots 1080p at 60fps. I recommend for those really special memories that you use a dedicated cam. As much as I am impressed with Epic's optics, it's still only a cell phone camera, and it doesn't even come close to the dedicated videocam's quality. Cell phone cams are good when you are in a bind and you don't have your good gear. They will never be a replacement for dedicated gear, IMO.

Go with the Epic I've used both and the Epic even on 2.1 is so MUCH faster. The camera is nicer on the Epic and the screen is much nicer looking.

I just really wish they'd sort out the issue with upload speed on the Epic, which currently seems to be capped at 150kbps on 3G (judging by the threads here at xda-developers and Sprint forums)

Does the EPIC allow you to swap out touchwiz for 'launcher pro'? I though you have to root the device to do something like that?

No LP does not require root -- They probably would not sell many programs if they did

LP is the way to go -- works great -- very customizable

My two "show stopper requirements" were being able to synch with Outlook, and being able to send/receive e-mail via POP3/SMTP with my existing AT&T email accounts.

I was leaning toward the Epic because of the slide-out keyboard, and despite the screen being smaller, the Epic screen was more vibrant. I knew that the EVO had a native app for synch with Outlook and the Epic did not, but was advised that I could synch with Outlook using Google as an intermediary. I did not like that solution, but was told, that for $40, I could get a 3rd party app called

That's your first mistake. Go and play with anything you buy first. Never let somebody else opinion influence your choice. What another persons says doesn't mean everyone thinks and feels the same way. Some people don't like the Epic. I love it. Some people don't like the Evo. I love that as well. I have both. Epic is my personal device though. I always wanted a physical keyboard with a big screen. .3 is not much of a difference.

You actually miss out when you look over things because of what others say. But I mean if you and whoever think the same way then I guess go ahead with whatever your choice is. It comes down to what you want in a device.

So I went to the sprint store, 99% certain I was going to pick up an EVO. I've played with them both in-store before and have done my homework on these forums, so I know what to expect from both phones - more important I know what to ask, talk-about and examine during my purchase visit.

The salesguy was good, knowledgeable and unbiased. I asked about return rates for the two phones, I asked about exchange compatibility, and also about battery life, download speeds and froyo/2.2 upgrades.

This particular store has a high rate of returns on the EVO and a low rate on the EPIC, the said reason was mostly battery life. The sales guy said both phones have apps for exchange, the EVO battery life is horrid and recognized the ota fix for the 150 upload issue on the EPIC. He said that a 2.2 upgrade for the EPIC was expected but not certain. He also acknowledged that HTC is better with their upgrades than Samsung is. All of this is pretty much as expected.

I spent the next 20 minutes with the in store demo phones, the EVO in my left hand and the EPIC in my right. And I put them both through some ropes in direct comparison.

I decided to get the EPIC after some considerable hesitation, after all I was set on the EVO and had done my research. I found these factors to change my mind:

The EPIC screen is incredible, its 10x better than any other phone I've seen
EPIC was noticeably snappier with touch interaction
Keyboard was more an asset that I expected, plus swipe comes stock
Interfaces where similar enough, sense is good, wiz is ok, not a factor


After having the EPIC for 3 days now, I've found that the phone is awesome and I'm really happy with it. I don't have many of the issues that have been mentioned on the forums and don't really notice the 150 upload cap with my usage pattern. The exchange integration is great - I have all my work email, meetings and contacts instantly. The phone is super responsive, no lag on anything and the screen is very easy on the eyes.

So far I'm happy with this phone.

I went back to the Epic. With the new update and the Epic now being only 20 bucks more at radio shack I decided to go back, and they let me get an Epic again no questions asked. I mean just for the decent earbuds and double the SD card storage alone is worth the 20 bucks. My 2nd Evo had dust under the screen and some dead pixels as well. And the update works, the Epic is now getting the same 3G upload as the Evo. Battery life seems better now too, so I'm feeling more confident about this phone. SAMOLED and the smoothness just can't be beat. I'm not changing my mind anymore.

If you're on the fence, go to a Sprint (or whatever) store and play with them. But if you want to do your due diligence and read the forums, here's my experience 1 day after I purchased an Epic.

I was sold on the Epic because:
Screen:
- Evo screen size was impressive, but looked over-brightened and washed out.
- Epic's super-amoled was sextacular; just looks leaps and bounds better than evo IMO.

Response time:
- There was a noticeable lag when scrolling with the Evo, also with pressing of icons.
- Epic was very responsive with no lag when scrolling. Very snappy.

Keyboard
- Although I use swipe (stock) most of the time, sometimes it just makes more sense to use a keyboard, so I'm glad it's there.

It's worth the extra $$ IMO, hope this helps.

I had the Evo for about a month and decided in the last few days of my 30 day return window that I wanted to swap it for the Epic. I was REAL hesitant, but a few weeks later, I'm glad I did. The screen is what originally got me to switch, but the physical keyboard has become essential for me. I've never had a smartphone before this with a physical keyboard, so I almost blew it off as unnecessary. I had an iPhone 3GS, Droid X and Evo before I came to the Epic. What I think is so awesome about having the physical keyboard is being able to see what the web page looks like and the places where I'm actually typing text into while using the keyboard. With the Evo, you cannot see what you are typing into because the on-screen keyboard covers the whole screen. To me, this is such a nice feature with having a physical keyboard.

Well I have the hero as well running froyo and working great. Im up for an upgrade.. What scares me about the epic is the manufacturers history of not updating the software and the fact that there are not a lot of developers working on this particular pocket pc.

This seriously is Moment vs. Hero all over again. Samsung or HTC? QWERTY or all touch? AMOLED or not? Faster processor or slower?

I fell for it once before and got the Moment, and regretted it terribly. The build quality was terrible, the software was buggy, and Samsung's support was god-awful. Switched it for the Hero and couldn't have been happier.

I just recently upgraded my Hero to an EVO in the midst of this Epic or Evo debate, and I know I made the right choice for me. HTC wins hands down - and not to mention, I suspect the dev's at xda will do a much better job with the Evo than the Epic (they've already done some killer work).

I partially agree.

I, too, went with the Moment instead of the Hero because of the screen, CPU, keyboard, etc, and was incredibly let down due to the massive amount of bugs like the airplane mode, finicky radio, etc. Due to Samsung's lackluster attitude and non-existant software support, I really wished I had picked the Hero instead.

However, it's different with the Epic.

Unlike the Moment, the Epic is an excellent machine. Honestly, the only reason I went with the Epic was because it was Galaxy S phone and I knwe there would be others that Samsung would have to support. I knew this one wouldn't get left in the dust. So far, I don't regret my decision. I had the Evo before, and I absolutely loved it. However, the lack of the keyboard made terminals, IRC, and general word processing a pain in the ass, so I decided to make the switch.

I couldn't be happier. I think both the phones are absolutely fantastic. However, if you want brute speed and strength, definitely try out the Epic. You have thirty days to switch it out if you have any personal problems, or if it's just not for you.

With that said, I agree wholeheartedly with you about the Hero and
Moment rivalry, but the Evo vs Epic is just a different ballgame.

The difference, as noted above, is that Galaxy S phones are the bread and butter of Samsung...they have too much invested in it. In addition, the phones are spread over many carriers...so, if Samsung mishandles their phones, there will be plenty of angry carriers!

I've seen some questions about the front camera. My fiance has an epic and we have the chance to do video chat. Literally standing side by side looking at each others screens... the evo's front camera is superior for sure. Her picture looked downright terrible (the picture of her on my evo). The fps issues were also resolved with a recent HTC update as well and is no longer capped at 30. The battery life is of course going to vary person to person and it's really just a pissing contest between the epic guy with 50 hours of non-stop battery and the evo guy with 52... rinse repeat on this forum.

I personally like sense better but my fiance likes her setup better. The screen on the EPIC is jaw dropping but to me it looks very fake. The epic is a bit thicker than the evo but not by much.

Oh and I actually came on here to check on 2.2 for her. I am really disappointed it's taking Samsung so long to incorporate 2.2 on their flagship line of phones.

I love my evo and she loves her epic. I wouldn't think much past "do I want a physical keyboard or not?" as my main decision maker.

I compared the EVO vs. Epic at the Sprint store and at my hospital. The TWO main requirements for my replacement phones are: call clarity and reception. The Epic is better in both regards. I don't use the video chat...and i guess that it is important to you if you use it. I use the physical keyboard daily...i don't even bother with the virtual keyboard because i like to see the conversation while typing.

The other big advantage of Epic screen is the gorrilla glass...so, no need for screen protector which improves image quality and touch sensitivity, esp. during gaming.

epic definitely has a nice screen, but just as definitely, it's over saturated. it's mentioned in just about every review, and shows up in more rigorous testing as well:

the evo launched before 2.2 was out, so it obviously gets more slack for being out longer before it got 2.2.

I just did a quick googling...almost every source says that it is in EVERY Galaxy S phones.
