I was a longtime BB user and despite pressure to go iPhone decided that open source was for me. I'm not a tech and not particularly patient configuring new kit so am asking for some quick pointers to apps, etc. I have looked myself but maybe I'm being a klutz or maybe just looking in the wrong place...

1. Auto off/on. How do I get my Nexus One to switch off as per a configurable schedule?

2. I don't want an alert for email (using gmail) but I do want an alert for SMSs. Is there the equivalent of a profile app to adjust sounds for this? My Nexus One is either both on or both off. Neither do I want the trackball to blink for email arrival but this isn't so important.

3. Auto spell-check in multi language (English and Spanish). Does such an app exist?

4. In email/SMS make the first letter a CAP?

No such thing with Android (AFAIK). What are you actually attempting to accomplish? There's probably another approach you can use.

There are quite a few. I use Profiles by egg n stone. There's also Setting Profiles and many others to choose from. You should be able to adjust the notifications in each app as well. Just be aware that the profiles apps aren't quite like the profiles on the BB. You won't have fully centralized control of every alert (LED, sound, vibration) like you did with the BB. Even with a profile app you may need to manually adjust notifications in certain apps.

I doubt that's an option in most SMS apps. You'd need to check you keyboard options or look into an alternate keyboard app. I know I have that option with Swype, for example, even though I leave it off.

No way to turn Android on on a schedule as it turns the phone off completely when it powers off not like a BB that just makes it go to sleep (thus the battery pulls needed as a cure for memory leaks). No need to turn it off on a regular basis either. Maybe you just need an app to make go into airplane mode on a schedule?

This is a standard feature. Go into messaging and press Menu>Settings and uncheck all notifications.
Go into mail app press Menu>Settings and make sure you have notifications checked. Check out GMail notifier type apps for extended controls of GMail notifications.

I think it is possible to change localizations for keyboard, but you would need to search for this one, definitely doable.

Standard feature again: Settings>Language and keyboard>You keyboard>Auto-capitalization.

1. didn't know it wasn't using battery when asleep so that's not the issue, i really just need to silence the phone. i'll pursue this line more.

You can do 2 things with android that I have found so far.

1) setup smart batt mode in the settings, set peak and non peak times for the processor/system. This basically slows down and frees memory at some time you set, and loads back up when you set. Great feature, something I wish the BB had.

2) actual power off, no. but full on sleep mode, if you leave your phone alone there is a timer that will put it to sleep after such a time. I use 15 seconds and then use Screebl to keep the screen on.

This allow the phone to sleep (think hibernate on a computer) when you leave it alone. I can go 2+ days on my DX when I'm not on it all the time.
