Anybody else loving/hating their naked/bare Eris?

it was real easy and the water was not a big deal - just make sure you shake it off a bit first and i used a paper towel at the end when i was squegeing the excess out from under - Looks great - just be PATIENT and careful - these last a ton longer than the cheap stick on ones and are super clear and wipe right off IF you get a smudge

I contacted HTC regarding screen protectors. They replied:

Thank you for your reply about screen protectors for your device.

To provide the best used out of the device we do not recommend them. But if you are is a really rough environment where the screen could come in contact with a lot of stuff that might scratch the screen you my chose to use one. The screens do not scratch that easily if you take care of the device. It really comes down to the type of use and the environment that the device is exposed to.

That's it, I'm getting a screen protector right away. I've had this phone for a month now and was able to keep the screen completely scratch free by being fairly careful (nothing else goes into the same pocket as the phone, etc.). Today I went to a golf driving range and put the phone into a soft-lined pocket by itself with a credit card-like card on the rubber side. Somehow the card got shifted to the front side of the phone, and left four nice squiggley scratches across the face. The scratches aren't very deep (there is one deep nick), but are noticeable with certain background colors and at certain angles. I was surprised at how easily the screen got scratched, all from a credit card lying flat against the face..

NAKED!!!
IMO, putting covers on gadgets like this is the same as putting clear vinyl slipcovers on fine furniture. If I wanted something cheap-looking, and cheap-feeling, That's what I would have bought.

Ditto, I have always felt this way about technology. My general turn around on phones anyway is around the 1.5 - 2 year mark. By that time it's seen some wear and I will be getting a new one. Although, I really hope my screen doesn't become susceptible to scratches from a credit card. :/

exactly...

go naked, till you get a scratch and wished you had invested in a $2 protector.

I actually went to the Verizon store a few weeks ago to try to buy the Verizon protectors to use temporarily, but they didn't have any in stock (Hawthorne, CA). I wanted to wait and see what the quality options were, so I wouldn't be plunking down $10-15 each time in trial and error to get a protector that didn't last or didn't perform well. After getting the scratches yesterday, I gave in and ordered a Boxwave anti-glare protector. We'll see how it holds up.

I'm actually of the opinion that it seems silly that such a beautifully simplistic yet elegant looking product needs to be covered in cheap protective gear in order to retain its shape from normal use and wear. It's like the sports cars you see on the road with the black nose masks.

I recently just purchased a cover for my eris and could not be happier, it was 8 bucks usd shipped... imo you cant beat it. The material is TPU, so its a semi-hard case with a nice smooth finish. I have not noticed any "sticking" like most "rubberized" or silicone cases. If anyone is interested here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/SMOKE-BLK-Cryst...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item3a55a3570b. Paired with a screen cover it would make for one handsome handset.

Ouch, I just recently got my Eris and stuck a TPU Clear Smoke case on it. Honestly looks great and also tossed on a screen protector. Was my first time installing one but the thing looks perfect. Of course i watched a Youtube video about putting on a screen protector before applying mine. YouTube - Proper screen protector installation (products by, Luxmo)

Let me know how that Boxwave protector works out for you. I was looking at the anti-glare one (as opposed to the Crystal) as well, because it mentions being more fingerprint-resistant.

I'm using the VZW protectors right now, but will likely switch to the Boxwave, especially if you come back with a good review.

One thing that drives me crazy about my iPod touch is how easily it can be scratched and fingerprinted. If you seriously even take it out of the case and use it for a few minutes you will see smudges and probably scratches very shortly after. I have had it in a case nearly all of the time and it still somehow has permanent scratches on the back.

That being said, it seems like the Eris has been made to withstand usage much better and still look very nice. Even so, I'm so paranoid from my touch that I'm going to use a thin clear case that I found on eBay.

My ClearTouch Anti-Glare screen protector arrived from Boxwave yesterday, and shipping took extra long because of the stupid DHL to USPS handover (was shipped by DHL on 12/10, reached the local area on 12/12 and was given to USPS, and took until yesterday to finally be delivered).

Installation was simple and straightforward. There was a tip in the forum to work in a misty area with dust less likely to be floating around, so I took a hot shower and worked in the bathroom afterward. I used slightly soapy water on the screen protector to let me slide it around on the Eris for final positioning and gently pressed out any air bubbles. After drying for an hour, I could see a few small spots on the edges not adhering to the screen. One was on the side of the screen, the others were at the top surrounding the proximity sensor. The Boxwave website FAQ explains that it takes some time for the rigid screen protector to fully conform to the shape of the screen. One day later, I was able to press out the side spot, but the others at the top remained.

Right away after turning on the Eris, I could see that the screen protector gave a sparkly uniform rainbow effect over any non-black color. Text and borders look fairly hazy and the picture just does not shine through like with the bare screen, everything looks somewhat cloudy. I believe this is all due to the anti-glare properties of the protector, but it's giving me eye strain and completely kills the picture quality, looking like something you'd expect from an LCD from 8 years ago. As far as the anti-glare feature goes, all this screen does is trade off a direct reflection of light with a more diffuse reflection that's still just as hard to see through.

Testing out the feel, my finger can slide across the screen smoothly and easily, even smoother than with the bare screen. Response to touch commands and typing feels fine with no noticeable effects. The home buttons are still laggy, but mine have always been laggy even without a protector on. Fingerprints wipe off the screen easily, but I think the cloudy screen protector helps to blend some of these in.

Overall, I think this ClearTouch Anti-Glare screen protector feels quite durable and was easy to apply, but I don't think I can live with the significantly degraded picture quality. I'm going to bite the bullet, consider my first $13 spent a loss, and spend another $13 to get the Crystal version, which I've read is not noticeable at all when installed.

Thanks for getting back to me with that. I was impatient, though, and so I ordered a ClearTouch Anti-Glare a couple of days ago. Hopefully it doesn't take as long to get to me as yours did.

That's sad to hear about the picture quality, and now I'm curious to see if mine does the same thing. I'm secretly hoping the little amount of soap in the water you used caused the rainbow effect, but that might just be wishful thinking on my part. I'll report back once mine comes in. I had heard good things about the feel of it, and you mentioned being able to slide your fingers around pretty easily, so that's good to know.

I had a ClearTouch Crystal for my old phone (LG Venus), and loved it. Installation was super-easy (I didn't use any water, as per the Boxwave website FAQ), it held up perfectly over the two years that I had the phone, and the clarity was so good that I honestly forgot it was on there most of the time. I hope you have the same experience with yours. I'm pretty sure that, if I have the same problems with my Anti-Glare as you did, I'll be following you and buying another Crystal instead.

Thanks again!

This is what I'm hoping too, that after some more drying time, the screen clears up a bit colorwise. It's really horrible to look at a white background such as when typing an e-mail or text message - it's like looking at thousands of microscopic disco balls. But I don't have any hope for the haziness. With the phone off you can see that cloudiness is built into the protector, and other reviews that I've read just today mention the same thing.

I've had my Eris for about 3 weeks now and I'm still debating screen cover vs. naked. I've read about a lot of people who have screen covers and liked them, but I haven't heard much from the naked supporters.

So far the screen gets smudges from fingers and cheeks, but a quick wipedown on my shirt or pants does the trick every time. I don't really see the need for a screen cover, and it seems pretty durable anyway. Has anybody done a scratch test or anything?

The day after I got mine, I noticed a smudge at the top left--just above the actual screen--that would go away when I wiped it, but kept coming back. It ended up being a set of small scratches that kept filling in with oil & dirt. Lo and behold, I found a small piece of sand in my pocket (what are the freakin odds?). I quickly went to the Verizon store and bought a (pack of three really) screen protector. The Verizon ones seem kind of crappy, it was a pain putting it on, and it picks up my finger oil really easily, but it's better to me than more scratches. But hey, at least my Eris has some character now, and thank God it wasn't on the actual screen or I would have found an excuse to exchange it.
